OKAY, YA’LL.  here goes the explanation / rant about my fc / portrayal choice for my belle.  FAIR WARNING:  if you like emma watson’s feminism or her portrayal of belle, you might not want to read this post.  i don’t want to offend ANYONE with this, so the rest of this explanation / rant will be under the cut.  THANKS! 

okay.  so.  to be honest, when i first heard that emma would be playing belle, i wasn’t ENTIRELY pissed.  i was a little irritated because i felt like they were just casting her because she’d played hermione and because she’s been the fancast for belle  ( again, just because she played hermione, because she doesn’t even look like belle )  for years.  but i was optimistic!  i was really hopeful after the live action cinderella.  lily james was such an ABSOLUTE ANGEL and made cinderella her own while keeping the integrity and beauty of the character intact.  i hoped emma would do the same with belle. 

i was wrong. 

before i go any further, i feel like i should explain why this affected me so much.  as a kid, belle was SO IMPORTANT TO ME  ––  she still is  ––  because i related with her so much, even before i realized it.  i too grew up in a small town that i never really FIT WITH.  i love the people in my own ‘little town,’ however, and i know they love me when it comes down to it.  belle was such an example of how to be hopeful and kind and decent to others, staying openminded and insightful, while being true to herself and her desires / dreams / talents.  she was so strong and warm and amazing, and i wanted to be just like her.  she encouraged me to take the steps i’ve taken in life to become the person i am and continually try to be. 

emma does not appear to think / value the same things about belle.  emma’s ‘feminism’ that she shoved onto belle in this new movie is not ACTUALLY real feminism.  REAL FEMINISM says that any woman can be whatever kind of woman she WANTS TO BE.  it doesn’t say that you can’t be warm or kind or soft.  it doesn’t say that you can’t wear nice and fashionable clothing.  it doesn’t say that you can’t allow others to help you when you need it.  it doesn’t say that you have to do everything on your own. 

but that’s what emma says with her portrayal of and opinion of belle.  and that’s why i don’t use her face or her portrayal on this blog. 

ALSO:  if you can use antonia thomas, why NOT use antonia thomas??  she’s amazeballs.  and she or GUGU or EMMY ROSSUM should have been belle. 

ALSO:  emma can’t sing worth a shit.

     gaston was certainly a challenge.  he was the ANTITHESIS of all that belle was beneath her skin, of all she deemed good and HONORABLE and praiseworthy:  brutish, violent, INSINCERE  ( he had to be, he just had to be ) , brainless, self-absorbed.  she tried to AVOID him when she could, though the size of their village PREVENTED such measures most days.  but it was not within belle to be cold or unfeeling or DISMISSIVE when her insight and perception permitted her a glimpse of BROKENNESS and unhappiness and  ––  dare she believe it  ––  FEAR in a fellow creature.  she rested a hand upon his FOREARM, light eyes staring into the depths of his gaze.  she wanted him to know he did not have her FOOLED  ––  she was not like the rest of the village.  he was no heroic SPECIMEN to her eyes:  just a man, and one who might be more BROKEN by life than anyone knew.   “––––––––––  of course, gaston.”

BEAST .

             t'was  the  effort  that  made  the  end  WORTHWHILE.  he  knew  what  she  meant,  and  knew  that  the  warmth  in  him  was  what  confirmed  it  all.  this  tale  :  one  of  his  favourites.  it  delighted  him  more  than  she  would  e'er  know  (  more  than  he  would  e'er  say  )  that  there  was  SOMEONE  ELSE  here  so  closely  read  as  he  was.  he  had  almost  forgotten  how  it  felt  to  carry  on  a  conversation  about  books  ;  intellectual  thought  had  nearly  fled  in  his  slope.  he  never  looked  at  her  but  from  the  peripheries  of  his  VISION  :  gazed  at  the  word  before  them,  letting  it  brush  and  linger  over  each.  beauty  was  found  within  these  words  …  and  they  were  both  aware  of  it.            ❛ yes,  i  suppose  it  is  something  to  be  FOND  of,  isn’t  it  ?  that  he  persists  even  through  the  most  difficult  of  trials  …  ❜            each  in  question  had  a  breaking  point  ;  t'was  up  to  the  one  suffering  the  burden  whether  or  not  to  overcome.            ❛  it  quite  SUITS  YOU.  ❜

     her father called her DETERMINED  ––  stubborn on his and her worst days  ––  and the VILLAGERS called her ‘set in her ways’ with indulgent  ( confused, befuddled, pitying )  smiles.  this was DIFFERENT.  this was an entirely uncommon and unexpected COMPLIMENT paid to her:  that such a beautiful and elegant and INSPIRING tale suited her.  it warmed her beyond expression, and filled her with EMOTIONS she could not describe, even to herself  ––  that had been happening with increasing REGULARITY as of late, she’d realized with a start.   “a prince in disguise indeed.”   she looked into his STRIKING eyes, always ASTONISHED at the worlds reflected and appeared in their depths.  she smiled.   “persisting through DIFFICULTIES and pain and UNCERTAINTY  ––  quite a regal young man arthur is.”   amusement sprinkled her expression.   “but i wouldn’t have thought you would like this STORY very much.  after all...”   she grinned with a TRIUMPHANT smugness, leaning back against the READING table and crossing her arms over her chest.   “it is a romance.”
