Hello Everyone,

I am Mahmoud, 26, a husband and father from Gaza. I got married to my beloved wife, Raneen, just a few months before the war. Together with my mother, Hanan, we had a peaceful life as our family was preparing to welcome its first baby.

But the war has shattered our dreams in unimaginable ways. Our home—our sanctuary—was destroyed, forcing us to flee south in search of safety. Now, we find ourselves living in a tent, a stark contrast to the life we once knew.

In the midst of this turmoil, Raneen gave birth to our precious baby in that tent. The joy of welcoming our child was overshadowed by the harsh reality surrounding us. Instead of stars and dreams, he entered a world filled with chaos and fear, with planes constantly overhead and the specter of hunger looming large.

Besides being constantly endangered, the war has created an endless series of crises for us to struggle, including the lack of food, drinking water, baby milk and even diapers.

It is hard for me as a father to cope with this reality. I want my kid to grow up in a better environment. I want to give him a better future. That's why we decided to relocate and start over elsewhere. Yet, to evacuate Gaza through Rafah crossing, the only passage out, we need to pay a huge sum, amounting to 10,000 USD per person.

Living in Gaza is not just a daily struggle; it’s a battle for survival. The blockade and ongoing crises have made even the most basic necessities a luxury that many cannot afford. For families here, making ends meet is an uphill fight, and every day brings new challenges.

Here’s a glimpse into our daily and monthly expenses in Gaza, converted to U.S. dollars for clarity:

1. Firewood for Cooking:

We need 2 kilograms of firewood daily, costing 10 NIS ($2.60). Over a month, this totals $78 just for basic cooking fuel.

2. Clean Drinking Water:

Accessing clean water requires waiting in long queues. Each refill costs 4 NIS ($1.05). Monthly, this amounts to $31.50.

3. Bread:

Bread is a staple, and a daily supply costs 8 NIS ($2.10). Over 30 days, families spend $63 on bread alone.

4. Basic Meals:

A single simple meal costs between 100-150 NIS ($26-$39), often insufficient for dinner. Even the lower estimate adds up to $780 monthly for a family.

5. Diapers for Babies:

Essential for young children, diapers cost 120 NIS ($31.50) per week, amounting to $126 monthly.

6. Baby Formula:

A single container of baby formula costs 100 NIS ($26). This is a recurring expense for families with infants.

7. Pocket Money for Children:

To give three children minimal daily allowance, we need 30 NIS ($7.90) weekly, adding up to $31.60 monthly.

Total Monthly Expenses:

Adding these essentials together, the monthly cost of living for a family in Gaza is approximately $1,136.10. This figure represents the bare minimum needed to survive, excluding additional expenses like medical care, clothing, or transportation.

FANTASTIC update from our dear friend Moataz!!

Moataz @moatazart has had some major developments in his situation.

A few weeks ago, PayPal terminated Moataz’s account without warning, taking back much of the funds he had raised to rebuild his house in Gaza City. To make matters even worse, the IOF recently bombed the house next to where Moataz and his family are staying. This heavily damaged their communal solar power grid, making access to electricity and internet even more difficult and dangerous.

Thankfully, there is some good news. Our dear friend Najia was able to help Moataz set up a new PayPal link, as well as a fundraiser on Chuffed, which is very similar to GoFundMe! Now Moataz is able to raise funds for his home reconstruction again, as well as repair the solar grid.

Moataz is a dear friend of ours. He has risked his life to document the ongoing genocide against Gaza, as well as to help other displaced people raise funds for evacuation. He has done so much for so many people, and we would appreciate anyone who could help repay his dedication by supporting his campaign.
