one of my biggest pet peeves (torchwood edition) is people definitively calling jack "american" like,,, he's not..? he may have assumed the identity of a 20th century american but he's from a landmass called the boeshane peninsula on an unnamed planet, which may have settlers originating from present day america, but is also so far in the future that human genetics isn't even "100% human" anymore

shakes torchwood around what if protagonists could be so morally gray
#torchwood#my kind of characterization#like yes give me a character who is in fact willing to sacrifice the lives of a few for the many#and put him in a basement full of people who disagree with that reasoning#and make them all shoot each other all the time#jack harkness#doctor who#this is exactly why i believe that jack is the ultimate hero#maybe not in the doctor who universe within itself as the doctor often can save people more easily(?)

this is Rose, this is Rose's boyfriend Jack and his boyfriend Ianto. This is the Doctor, he is Rose's husband and also Jack's husband.
This is River, she is Rose + Doctor + Missy's wife, Clara's girlfriend, and Jack is her boyfriend.
(you with me?)
Then this is Clara's fiance Danny. And over there is Clara's wives, Rose, River, and Missy. Oh- and her boyfriend the Doctor.
And here is Missy, her wives are Rose, River, and Clara. Then here's her husband the Doctor.
Over here is Martha who is Rose's girlfriend, and here's her husband Mickey.
In that direction we have Yaz and her situationship with the Doctor.
Explanation below the cut
[Red=Marriage Blue=Dating Pink=Situationship Yellow=Engaged] {Rose-Doctor {Rose-Clara {Rose-River {Rose-Missy {Rose-Martha {Rose-Jack
{Doctor-Rose {Doctor-River {Doctor-Missy {Doctor-Jack {Doctor-Clara {Doctor-Yaz
{Jack-Rose {Jack-River {Jack-Ianto {Jack-Doctor
{River-Rose {River-Doctor {River-Missy {River-Clara {River-Jack
{Clara-Danny {Clara-River {Clara-Rose {Clara-Missy {Clara-Doctor
{Martha-Rose {Martha-Mickey
{Missy-Rose {Missy-River {Missy-Clara {Missy-Doctor
....and i think that's it.
#doctor who#the only way i would accept doctorrose i swear#i hate all doctorcompanion pairings tbh#only doctorriver and doctormaster when reading for me

The Doctor’s pacifism always had a few weird holes in it, but I think my favorite is when Twelve is upset with Clara for dating Danny because he's a soldier and soldiers kill people. Meanwhile, Vastra, one of his long-time friends across multiple regenerations, eats people.

i HAATTTEEEE how the doctor who fandom treats danny pink. your boyfriend caring about your safety is abusive? asking for honesty is not abuse. and how can you claim to hate him because he's a soldier?! lmao? but you love the doctor?! the man who was so ashamed of his actions in the war that he hid his incarnation from himself?
danny vs 12 is actually some really good and meaty story that goes over everyone's head because 'HoW DaRE hE iNSuLt HiM'. that scene when he salutes and asks for orders is genius. because danny can SMELL the soldier on him. because he is one. danny can admit he was a solider. but the doctor cannot.
imagine hating danny for being a soldier but stanning the man who did a genocide. not even that, the man who has barked orders at companions in the past. the man who drove a woman to suicide?
the doctor is not a saint, and he hated danny because he was projecting. come on.
#doctor who#danny pink#twelfth doctor#clara oswald#danny is a fine character that deserved to live so that he and clara could've had a good happy ending#but the thing is he was never written like that#he was written as a plot device to give clara a reason to have control over how much time she spent with the doctor#because if she didn't have it why wouldn't she revert back to travelling full time#that 1st meeting with him and the doctor i feel completely different from op#i know it's to show their differences of acceptance for their 'soldier past' but danny phrases everything he says in that scene as an insul#he phrases it like he cannot believe a former solider#an officer as he states#doesn't want to admit he used to be one#so he does things that antagonise him for no reason#he tries to prove to clara that he isn't worth it#he judges based on a couple first impressions (which is exactly the same thing that the doctor does i know)#but he doesn't even get the thing right because the doctor does do orders but you don't always see the companions do what he says#do you see him punishing them like an officer would#do you see him grounding them because they don't follow exactly what he says#the only time you do is for life and death situations which you obviously would give life-or-death orders for#and the companions know that as should danny but he immediately goes into insulting because he sees that it gives the doctor the impact#he wants it to#so no i don't like danny but neither do i like doctorclara as a ship so i know and appreciate the stability he gives clara in the 8th seaso#and i understand the point he IS in the story for but that doesn't mean he has to be liked as a person to me#i know like and understand his point as a character to the story he bring a purpose and accomplishes it#but in NO WAY does that make me LIKE his personality or characterisation in the story so i will always say i DISLIKE (not hate) danny pink#with the doctor this whole thing is different in my point of view throughout the caretaker#he meets this man who is a former soldier so the doctor pulls a weirdo move and cannot accept he is a maths teacher#this is completely twelves own biases and cannot be helped in that moment#he then sees this man he stereotypes as 'dumb' or 'pe' in this case as destroying his whole plan (not danny's fault because he didn't know

Watching Torchwood because it's on iPlayer and oh God I need to talk about the whole "Jack ruined Tosh and Owen's lives to recruit them" theory that @alone-on-takodana and I talked through...
The thrust of the Tosh argument is that what happened to her really doesn't feel like UNIT's style. Like, they're problematic in their own way, like any military or quasi military organisation, but they're very much presented as being generally speaking a force for good.
It is, on the other hand, 100% the kind of shit that Torchwood (as we initially come to know it in DW) would pull. Both the locking someone up with no chance of appeal or of ever seeing their family, and lbr the very real possibility that the whole thing was a set up.
Because it does all stink of a set up. Tosh being exactly what Jack needed for his team, and here she is all desperate and isolated from everyone she knows and loves...
Not to mention just... how is Jack, who works for Torchwood, authorised to release a UNIT prisoner into Torchwood's custody? I can't remember if there's a reason given in the episode, but it honestly makes far more sense if it's actually Torchwood that had her locked up.
What happened with Owen is honestly even fucking creepier.
The question with Owen all stems from the matter of why exactly they didn't retcon him.
The only reason why they wouldn't have immediately retconned him, is if they wanted to recruit him.
The only reason they would want to recruit him, is if they had already been observing him for a while, seen how he kept searching for answers, wouldn't give up...
If they had been observing him for a while... why couldn't they have stepped in earlier? Even if Katie was a lost cause as soon as she was infected, why not step in and at least save the surgical team? The only REASON they could have for observing would be if they KNEW about the parasite, or at the very least suspected, why let it go on that long?
Because they needed Owen. Just like they needed Tosh. They needed a medic, and a bloody good one, who was brilliant and dedicated, and ALONE. So they let Katie die, let Owen's best friend die, let Owen seem crazy so he's alienated from everyone else he knows.
And that's assuming that all they did was let it happen... that they didn't MAKE it happen. That they didn't pick out someone who was already very isolated, no family who would miss him, and destroy what life he'd built so that he'd be vulnerable enough to join them...
And let's not pretend like this shit is beyond Jack. Like he's above this. He gave all those kids to the 456, he could absolutely have set Tosh up and imprisoned her, he could definitely have put a parasite in Katie's brain. You know, for the greater good.
#torchwood#yeah jack can do a lot of things#but i don't know how much i believe this one#he definitely could've set somethings up though
