sometimes i wonder why i, as a canadian, connect so deeply and feel such nostalgia towards appalachian imagery and culture despite growing up in southwestern ontario.
then i found this short clip from one summer where i visited my family out east and i remember my entire moms side of the family are acadian from new brunswick (which is literally in appalachia). when i visited last it was national acadian day or “tintamerre-caraquet” and all the people at ma tante et oncles trailer in beaubien all gathered around and celebrated and watched as this little band played acadian folk music. despite not being connected that much that part of my heritage or my catholic faith i remember feeling a sense of community i had never seen anywhere else.
and culturally speaking id argue that appalachian and acadian culture have many similarities. religion (though predominantly catholic in acadian culture), folklore/music, community/family, and craft such as quilting, carpentry, basketry etc are all a huge part of acadian culture and are all fairly similar from the limited research i’ve done. my pépè was literally a carpenter (and a farmer) before he passed and my mémè used to make so many quilts, including one i still have at home. anyways i just thought it was interesting, especially as i’ve been trying to learn a bit more about my acadian roots recently and i suppose that’s why all the stuff i see on my timelines about appalachia feel so familiar to me (now all i need to do is learn how to speak chiac)

i’m really not trying to be mean but if i see one more “cannibalism as a metaphor for love” thing about preachers daughter/strangers (or just in general really) i am actually going to go kewkew bananers.
in what world is that a love story??? cannibalism has never (in any decent media) represented actual, healthy, desirable love. why are we striving for an obsessive, all consuming, toxic relationship??
please go to therapy please please if not for yourself, do it for me!!!
