Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy galore

One thing I've noticed is that so many of the relationships in Percy Jackson had in common was jealousy.

Annabeth is jealous of Rachel, Calypso, Reyna and even Hazel for a few seconds because they're close to Percy.

Percy is jealous of Luke because of his close relationship with Annabeth (this is not romantic, but it's still jealousy).

Piper is jealous of Reyna and even Annabeth at one point because the latter was comforting/helping Jason.

Calypso is jealous of Reyna because she thought that he was Leo's girlfriend.

Frank is jealous of Leo because..........Leo's great grandad was Hazel's first love. And he thought that Hazel and Leo might have had something.

Nico is jealous of Will staring at Paolo to assess how his arms are working. (And it's treated as cute, too, which is something else that's bad.)

Grover is jealous of Juniper thinking that Luke was handsome.

Reyna is jealous of Piper and Annabeth (it's not unfounded, honestly, but she's still jealous).

It's a very interesting pattern I've noticed. It seems like main characters in PJO can't be in a relationship without having at least one jealous moment. Rick Riordan don't make your characters jealous of others for flimsy reasons challenge (impossible?).

Then again, they're teenagers and their hormones are high (I should think) so it might make sense that they're jealous, but Rick never touches on or says this in his books.

Also, all of them are teenagers and they're jealous. The adult couple, Jo and Emmie, were very healthy, probably the best couple with no jealousy.

Some days I get the feeling that people ship Jason and Leo together more out of spite for Caleo (I understand the hate) than love for Valgrace. Sorry if it sounded weird, but that’s how I feel…

It's hard to remember when I was in elementary school nowadays. So my memories of reading Rick Riordan's books for the first time are hazy. But I don't think I ever hated Leo and Calypso getting together. Now, allow me to speculate as to why that might have been. And that may just turn into a really, really long ramble on my part.

As a 10-15 year old, I was cognizant of shipping (and did read stuff like that online), but I was also just fine with happy endings to my stories. And since Leo didn't die, that was good enough for me. The book ended happily, with most major characters (besides octavian, who sadly died) surviving. That was enough to please me, I think.

And now, to just speak from my more modern, 19 year old perspective: I hate how Calypso was punished with eternity on an Island. Nobody ever stayed with her, nobody ever seemed to care. The fact that Leo came back for her…well, that touched me. It's what I'd wanted Percy to do in the Battle of the Labyrinth. It's something I'd been waiting to see for so long. So to see that someone, literally anyone, cared enough about this poor lady to save her from her prison… it's wonderfully touching.

The caleo pedo discourse will forever make me groan in frustration. Like I don't love caleo either guys but... Calypso is a teenager dating a teenager. She's not a pedophile she's an ageless immortal Titan

Gods and titans in the pjo and hoo series are not people in the way Leo and Percy are people so they don't age like us. Nyx is the concept of the night, Aphrodite changes appearance depending on who's seeing her, all the Gods speak english and wear modern clothing and have Roman aspects cause like... they're concepts. They're supernatural forces.

Percy describes Calypso as looking 15 or 16 when he meets her, and yes, she is a thousand+ years old but she's not maturing like a human would. She's changing based on the way people worship her, and all the versions of her I can find portray he as younger than most other Olympians. Later in toa she becomes a whole mortal teenager.

Obviously nothing is confirmed, but I would imagine Calypso presents in different forms depending on who lands on her island, and presents in a form their age and of their culture so it's easiest for them to fall for each other. Whatever the explanation is, there is never a point in reading either pjo or Hoo where I thought Calypso was an adult and I don't see how anyone else could.

You can do whatever you want in fandom I'm not saying you have to engage with caleo in the bounds of canon but I've seen 100% serious takes saying that in canon Calypso is a predator. She is intended to be Leo and Percy's age, and acts like it too, she's in a book series meant for children. There are tons of reasons to dislike caleo, I dislike caleo, but their relationship is plenty age appropriate.

The PJO fandom's act of worshipping Solangelo and bashing Caleo in the same breath is some S-tier clownery (which is saying alot). Yes, Caleo's criticisms are all extremely valid, but the same apply very well to Solangelo too.

"Leo is a traumatized teen who needs help, not a lover."

Ditto for Nico.

"Leo's character arc and development were ruined thanks to caleo."

Replace 'Leo' with 'Nico' and 'Caleo' with 'Solangelo'. You've got a rational criticism of Solangelo now.

"Caleo is one-dimensional."

So is Solangelo...

Misogyny is loving hundred year old, immortal, morally grey book boyfriends but hating on Leo x Calypso because "she's an immortal Titan and is too old for him". Where was this attitude when Edward dated Bella? Tamlin? Rhysand? Jacks? Hell, Legend literally dated Tella's grandmother. Double standards much?

This isn’t a commentary on intelligence, it’s about environmental surroundings.

As a person who grew up in Texas, we don’t have grass, we have concrete. Statically speaking, Leo wouldn’t have eaten grass. Also he’s smart (Did college math equations at age 8).

For Calypso, she was immortal in her childhood so I feel grass wouldn’t affect her in the slightest and she’d just go on with her day.

This joke looked like a nice time to draw how I headcanon Calypso to look.

1. I feel like she ties flowers into her hair and braids her hair in different styles since one of her pass times is weaving

2. I gave her vitiligo since I saw that people already headcanoned her to have it. Idk the og reason but my interpretation is that it makes her face look like a bunch of islands.

3. Calypso’s mom isn’t clear but with the consistency of it being tied to the ocean and Calypso’s dad canonically being Atlas, I thought to myself “What’s the sky and sea if not islands inbetween?” And Gods do love their ironic punishments. (I definetly need more practice on that part of the design)

4. I gave Calypso a Polynesian look as more diversity seems to be being added to the live action remake. Additionally, Polynesian translating to “Many” and “Islands” in Greek.

(If there are any Polynesian viewers, if I got anything wrong or if there’s a way to make the design more accurate, I’d love to know)

I tried putting symbolism in the flowers Calypso has in her hair but ended up messing with the coloring.

(I do want to put insert some butterfly weed in a future design)

Still on hiatus cause of stupid life stuff. But this keeps my brain occupied. I got 3 word docs of analysis.
