The Jackalope

There's a rabbit in the window I've had them since they were small. An innocent ball of fluff Hopping around with joy, frolicking in the summer breeze. Pure and untouched. We danced those early days away beneath the bright sun lite sky.

However, you grew as I did and when your antlers started to appear their gaze changed. No long the innocent little bunny. Hate was in their eyes you were different and that wasn't right. No longer a child, no longer pure.

Shave your antlers, bat your lashes. Meek and tainted submitting to their gaze. Their hands grabbed and pulled, dirtying your brown coat. It used to shine in the sun like amber or silky dark chocolate. Once sweet but now bitter to the tongue. Darkened by messy hands and age. No matter how much you cleaned it never went away. Tainted goods is what they said.

A sign of fertility you desperately wanted to wash away. I saw your struggle and wanted to help my hands were tied. You changed your favorite color. Put on frills and ribbons. Mirrored those around you. Inside you cried every night until you fell asleep. Put on the song and dance perform for the world conejita!

There's a rabbit in my mirror staring back at me with big dark eyes. I want to hold you and comfort you little jack-rabbit, but my hands are tied. I'm sorry you suffer so much. I'm sorry you have to hide your beautiful antlers. I'm sorry people touched you. I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough. I'm sorry I have to hide you from the world. I'm sorry little bunny.

Always a willing sacrifice for the wellbeing of others. Hurting and suffering in silence Until it's too late. Your pulse speed until it drops, heart stops drumming in your chest. Bulging eyes stare death in the face nose twitching, laid bare to his gaze. Seeing his skeletal face you close your eyes accepting fate. His hands are cold and warm welcoming. It felt like home it felt like love. Voice raspy and deep assending time and space. "It is not your time little one."

Maybe in a different time in a different world you were lifted to the moon forever immortalized in her shadows and lights. Seen as something to be cherished A cosmic entity, an elusive cryptid. In some eyes you could be but not many. Adored by few, used by most. Your body and soul ripped apart.

There's a rabbit in the window reflected back at me. We have grown oh how we've grown. Shaved fluff, eyes wide and on alert Antlers grown out and on display Proud of who you are. Scared but unafraid to show the truth. Would your childhood self be proud or scared? Innocent and tainted, seasoned but naive Oh jackalope how will you grow?
