something something infinite glory vs fallen from grace, how tgcf’s whole point is its range. how the whole point is to show extreme contrasts: xie lian floating through the sky as a hero vs lying drunk and filthy at the bottom of a grave pit. shi qingxuan the vibrant privileged god vs the disfigured beggar. pei ming the great warrior vs the easily humiliated coward. hua cheng the too-brave solider boy vs the fearsome ghost king vs the playful and sometimes vicious san lang. it’s still just you.

on hua cheng's morality and self esteem

on my first read of the book, i was actually convinced that hua cheng was this amoral asshole but that's just what he WANTS you to think. hua cheng actually cares a lot about ghost city (founded to combat the injustice of ghost persecution btw), he just downplays his achievements in front of xie lian because he doesn't want to 'trick' him into liking him. he also sees any accomplishments as a direct result of dianxia's influence so it would be wrong to take credit for them. perhaps hundreds of years of playing the part of the terrible calamity skewed his perception of himself even further.

in his introduction in heaven, they say how he would "Sometimes... carry out a massacre in cold blood, and sometimes he would do odd acts of kindness" (page 157, book 1) which makes me wonder what heaven defines as "cold blood." he visibly dislikes the man who bet his daughter's life and mentions killing several tyrants. in creating e'ming, he nearly destroyed himself in order to save those mortals. on the casino in ghost city, "If I don’t control a place like this, then someone else will. I’d rather that person be me." (page 107, book 2.) he has a very strong sense of justice that he hides under 3 million layers of arrogance.

xie lian gets the ability to tell if he is lying early in the book and sees him for who he really is. they're very similar in that they have this drive to do good in the world but think about it and go about it in very different ways. hua cheng even mentions that it doesn't matter how you go about saving the common people, and that xie lian over-complicates what is right and wrong and should do what he wants... but he wouldn't turn that logic on himself :/

Domesticity is so specific to the couple in question, I think. Like yeah, “cuddling in bed” is such a nice domestic trope but I feel like there’s another layer people tend to miss. 

Like, Dazai and Chuuya go about their normal routines even on their days off. Chuuya gets up and goes for his run, while Dazai isn’t even up until after Chuuya has been back for a while. They get their morning coffee together, maybe eat some breakfast, but then go about their days separately. Chuuya might work from his laptop, at his desk, while Dazai reads a book on the couch. Dazai will watch TV in their living room, and Chuuya will be doing the dishes in the kitchen. Chuuya pours himself a glass of wine in the evening and brings a drink to Dazai even though he didn’t ask. They silently communicate through most of their day, like they do in their partnership. They’re so used to each other that it’s just second-nature. 

Ranpo and Edgar spend their evenings competitively watching crime dramas from everywhere in the world, trying to see who can solve it the fastest, and watching to the end to find out. They bake sweets together, and Ranpo sneaks Karl some snacks (much to Edgar’s annoyance). Ranpo plays his switch while Edgar writes, and maybe they switch places after a while, so Ed can navigate his way through the game and Ranpo can read. They go to bed early, and Edgar stays up a little longer, invested in some book he can’t put down, or jotting down his most recent ideas. Ranpo wakes up earlier than the other and heads into work, but makes sure Karl has been fed and taken care of beforehand, so his partner can rest a little longer. They’re the old sappy, in love couple at the supermarket or in the park, going about their weekly routine without a care in the world for anyone else around them. 

Akutagawa and Atsushi, both of which grew up with scarce amounts of food, will share their meals and snacks, always allowing the other to take what they want from their portion. They go on the weekly shopping trips with Gin and Kyouka. They clean together and clip coupons out of habit, they spend their weekends playing cards in the laundromat, waiting for their stuff to be done. Atsushi brings him some food if he’s working late, or they meet up for lunch during the day. Atsushi coaxes Akutagawa into being a little more social, and in turn, Akutagawa’s realism starts to rub off on Atsushi.  They argue, sometimes, but that’s because they’re still growing as people, and trying to figure out how to grow together. 

Idk, I like to think about how each one of these couples fits together and is just comfortable around each other and comfortable sharing a space together, even if they’re not doing anything actually together.

Dazai Character Meta

God I really hope I’m not the only person who noticed this. And if you didn’t well here, notice it senpai.

Here we have Dazai at the Season 4 finale looking an awful lot like a fucker we know and want to protect.

Aka this tiny bastard.

Now it’s no secret that we’ve all been theorizing and trying to unravel what makes Dazai tick. One thing a lot of people have noticed is that he reverts in moments back to his mafia self, which I believe is closest to his true self. He just allows for more care? If that’s the right word, in his interactions with others.

What is interesting to me is that Studio Bones actually might have picked up on that subtle detail and is using it? (Not hate to the studio, but because they tend to push things out quicker the animation sometimes takes a hit)

The biggest piece I wanted to share, I noticed Dazai has a larger chance of reverting to his old ways when he is around Fyodor. And with the prolonged exposure to him, I think we see his behaviors are slightly altered in the manga. SPOILERS: like how we see he’s a little more careless with Chuuya than he might have been in the past. He lets smaller details go, sacrificing what he might view as pawns in favor of backing a stronger offense. What I find particularly odd is that Dazai is known for valuing the position of pawn and not underestimating any ability. But when he’s speaking with Fyodor it’s almost like he doesn’t want to loose or back down, so he’s willing to break character.

I don’t know if any of this actually made sense, but I hope someone enjoyed it!!

Oh god this is so canon it hurts. Like imagine when Atsushi first joins he sees Dazai and Kunikida in a fight, and this mfer whips out his gun and shoots the man. The poor baby tiger would have enough panic attacks for all the agency.

Funny theory that since it’s canon in the light novel that Kunikida can shoot Dazai with a weapon made from his ability and it won’t hurt him, I like to think when Dazai’s really pissing him off he just whips out his notebook, shoots him point blank and keeps walking.
