Work Permits and the CFM
So you’ve booked a gig in the states. Congratulations!
There are many components to planning a successful trip, but most important is ensuring that you have avalid work permit before you cross the border. If you’re papers are not inorder:
While you are able to obtain a work permit independently, acquiring one through the CanadianFederation of Musicians is simpler and less risky.
You must be a CFM member to apply for the work permit below. For more information on becoming a member, dues and benefits please contact your local CFM office.
There is a special work permit the CFM will apply for called a P2 permit. This permit can be valid for up to a year if you have a show or work commitment within every 45 days.
Musicians, technicians, road manager and anyone else who is tied to your gig must be included in the permit.
Here are all the components you need to submit for a P2 application:
1. Personal Information for each Musician or Essential Worker: The name, sex, date of birth, contact information, passport and citizenship information, as well as disclosure of having been denied entry into the United States in the past for every person crossing the boarder.
2. CFM Membership Verification: You need to verify that you are an active member of the CFM.
3. Date of Entry and Exit: You can entre the US two days before the date of work and must leave the day after. It is possible to get an extension for travel time and/or vacation but it must be specified on your application.
4. Port of Entry: Are you coming from land, sea or air?
5. Technician Verification: To be verified by lead artist and list the technicians that are to be included in the permit.
6. Contract for Show: Need proof of show. Includes venue name and address, date of show, musicians names, compensation and contact information for employer.
FEES
There are two departments you need to pay fees to.
Department of Homeland Security: must be paid to “Department of Homeland Security” via money order.
Musicians Only: $325 USD. For an expedited application plus $1,225 USD.
Musicians + Technicians/Crew: 2 money orders each for $325 USD. For expedited applications add 2 money orders for $1,225 USD each.
AFM Admin Fee: $100 CDN and an additional $20 CAD per additional musician/technician.
Once you’ve assembled your application, please reference the checklist CFM provides here.
When it’s all been checked and submitted it will take up to 45 days to hear if you’re application had been approved or denied. If you have paid the extra fee for an expedited service it will take a maximum of 25 days.
For a much more thorough and lengthily overview of your work permit application requirements, please check out the Canadian Federation of Musician’s website.
Above all: have fun, play safe and don’t mess with border patrol.

Looking Forward...
We got into the music industry to help artists, to stand by them, to live or die with them…to protect them.
The feeling we have when we see our artists perform or when we hear a new song for the first time is unshakable and it drives us.
As Managers, our job has been to invest not only in our artist’s creative development but also into their business, entrepreneurial and personal growth. We have done this for many years and with great pleasure.
From the moment music was first created (around the stone-age), new young artists started to come along…and they keep coming along and coming along. New artists are not afraid that there are fewer and fewer places for them to go to for monetary, marketing and developmental support. They are not afraid that it has become extremely difficult to find and retain an audience…they just want to create and to be heard. They need our help and the previous, long standing, music industry model can no longer provide emerging artists with the level of support they need. Emerging artists are now in control of their careers and need to acquire the tools and knowledge to be able to develop and sustain their careers.
New artists continue to emerge and our desire to help them is unwavering, but we too have had to adjust. What used to be a model geared towards instant monetary gain needed to be adjusted to focus on education and entrepreneurship with an aim to empower the emerging artist.
Three years ago we established a music eco-system built on the pillars of rolled up sleeves/hands-on mentoring, education, networking, trust and collaboration. Separate from Coalition Music, Canada’s Music Incubator is a not-for-profit entity committed to the long term mentorship of artists regardless of genre or style. We invite them into our Artist Entrepreneur and Artist Manager programs and give them the full weight of our staff, our knowledge, our studios and our contacts. We approach our business like the patrons of yesteryear and we hope that others in our industry will follow suit.
If we put the time and effort in to nurture new artists, to get into the trenches with them and empower them, our industry as a whole will WIN.
Those of us that live to help artists must do all that we can to leave no great new artist behind.
Eric & Rob
Co-founders, Coalition Music
