I so often think about what the tone of scene with the backless book would have looked like in the Six of Crows spin off.

In Six of Crows, when the crew arrive in Djerholm they go to an Inn and sit on the terrace to give them a clear, if distant, view of the road that leads to the Ice Court, and Kaz uses a device he calls a 'backless book' to see the prison wagon on the road with perfect clarity - it looks like a perfeclty normal book until you hold it open on a specific page at a specific angle. He passes the book around without telling anyone that it is actually a mirrored lens so that no-one else on the terrace will know what they're talking about, and when Wylan is offered the book by Jesper he initially refuses to take it. He asks 'What does it say?' and Jesper replies 'Just look'. In this scene everyone, including the reader, is yet to learn that Wylan cannot read and therefore this line doesn't have any particular impact on us in the moment, except as a continuation of the idea that Wylan feels uncomfortable and that the others tend to be impatient with him for the way he doesn't fit into their world. But imagine what this scene would look like with the added subtext that Jesper already knows he can't read but the others don't! AND the added subtext they already have an established relationship!!

Imagine the panic in Wylan's eyes slowly growing as the book moves round the group, imagine the hesitation in his voice as he asks Jesper what it says, imagine Jesper softening his voice to reassure him as he gently tells him that he just has to look.

And on this same vein, imagine Jesper beginning to piece together why Wylan 'left' his father's house early on. Imagine Jesper standing on the deck of the Ferolind with Inej as she quietly tells him that Van Eck writes to Wylan every week and Wylan doesn't even open the letters, the way she'd study him as she noticed that he knew something more than her but would never pry. Imagine the way the tone would change for when Wylan is drawing the maps of the Ice Court and says he hasn’t labelled anything because he doesn’t know Fjerdan, despite the fact that he’s already revealed he speaks Fjerdan - in the book no-one questions it and I think that’s partly due to Jesper mocking him and saying that he probably doesn’t speak it well (it’s confirmed later that he does) and partly due to the way he doesn’t fit in and the others aren’t really paying him much attention; it’s a brief moment the reader doesn’t put much stock into until they find out that Wylan can’t read at the end of the book. The added dimension of us already having that subtext would have been absolutely fascinating and I am so so upset we don’t get to see it play out, especially since we would probably have a lot of Wesper angst going on as well - I’m imaging the way Wylan would fear Jesper ratting him out or turning on him because he lied to him and being so shocked that he doesn’t and just not understanding the way he still cares about him or that he would still protect him because he doesn’t know what it feels like to be loved I’m gonna cry

Do I read the Shadow and Bone series first, or Six of Crows duology?

OR do I have to read a different series entirely?? I just want to read stuff in order so I don’t get any spoilers and stuff… but if I get bored i’ll probably end up reading six of crows anyway haha

I have both books, but Six of Crows sounds so interesting to me; I’ve read like the first few chapters of SaB but got kinda bored, but I forgot everything about it… so it’s probably worth reading it again!

And please give me reasoning why lol

Finally finished A Curse For True Love

As you have probably read in my previous rant about ouabh and tbona, I was dying. My dudes: the cliffhanger?!?!? I was literally crying about the fact that Evangeline would hate Jacks when she got her memories back, or if she’d fall in love with apollo or something 😭

BUT NO. I HAVE NOT BEEN DISAPPOINTED

This book was an ADVENTURE. Yes it got a bit boring at the start, but i love the build up!!! I love when she meets jacks (archer 🤭) and like he’s trying so hard to distance himself- AND OH YEAH

the MULTIPLE POVs

i was actually SO EXCITED! We got jacks pov!!!!!!!! And BOY HE IS IN LOVE WITH EVANGELINE. After a while I actually hated reading apollo 😭 I hated HIM for what he did, but his povs were still quite interesting hehe

And the KISS. THE KISSES. THESE TWO ARE ACTUALLY THE END OF ME.

And it’s not just left to interpretation, they both really say they love each other !!!!1!1!1!

One of my FAVOURITE moments in the book is when evangeline kisses jacks while trying to convince him to not burn his heart, then jacks gives in and they just kiss because they’ve wanted to SO BAD alwkdnfndjf

no but then jacks thinks he’s killed eva (which I was also thinking and was dying 😭) but then when she makes another proclamation of love for him, he’s like:

‘i thought you died’

‘no i forgot to breathe lmao’

not liek that but YKYKYKYKYKYKYK….and then there’s the ‘once upon a time’ and a bunch of kissing !!!!!!

So far my FAVOURITE book series/trilogy EVER.

Does anyone else get really influenced by other people’s opinions on books, even when you have your own??

like, for example, when i’m on goodreads and i read a book, i go and review it. and then i see low-starred reviews saying ‘i hated the plot, it wasn’t good..’ or ‘this character was annoying because of this…’.

and i already have an opposite that’s even opinion to theirs, like, ‘oh i loved the plot twist ’ or ‘this character was great’ , and just reading that one review can really make me question if i really liked that book or not.

… it’s probably just me cuz i keep coming across spoilers for acftl across a bunch of social media platforms 😭 istg i NEED TO READ IT

Should I read the Hunger Games series?

Like there’s so much hype for the new movie and stuff, and it’s been on my tbr list for like, a year now 😭 I love the dystopian genre, and I’ve read the Divergent series… I can’t help but think that The Hunger Games is just a litttle different from the rest ?? I dunno how to explain. Maybe it’s because the books have been turned into really popular movies ( I haven’t seen the movies either). I do know a lot about the plot, but i just really wanna get into the fandom and stuff.

My thoughts on Once Upon a Broken Heart and The Ballad of Never After

Note: This is basically a rant. Spoilers ahead!

(haven’t read the third on yet btw!)

I am loving these series. I love jacks- in the first book he was hilarious and super mysterious. and evangeline! i love eva- she’s also really pretty lol.

i can tell that in the first book that they were probably already going to end up together in the end, but there was a bunch of twists and stuff that i just really enjoyed !

now. the ballad of never after.

wowee. i sacrificed many hours of sleep to finish this book and it was WORTH IT. LIKE WOW. AND NO.

Like , the scenes with evajacks in the Hollow were just so fun!!!! where jacks cleans up eva’s wounds 😭 but it was just such a roller coaster. like with all the dreams, then them finding the mirth stone.

OH AND SPEAKING ABOUT THE STONES AND STUFF: like a bit unrelated, but LaLa’s engagement party!!!!! we got to see a jealous jacks!!!! and luc 😭 OMG LUC. HIM. Honestly i didn’t know how to feel about him when he low key betrayed evangeline but he’s so funny and i’m so here for it lmaoaoao. no but JACKS BEING JEALOUS. I just wish i could see some more genuine scenes where he’s more honest with his feelings with her wITHOUT THE ENCHANMENT OF A STONE 😭. anyway

long story short.

WHAT THE HELL APOLLO.

from the start, i obviously wanted evajacks, and i was hoping for a scene where evangeline to like, tell apollo she likes jacks, but anyway… SERIOUSLY. WHY. WKKFKSKBDJFJDJFJFNDJFNGNEKKQKSKFJFJDNSD.

AND THATS NOT ALL. REMEMBER EVANGELINE WROTE A LETTER TO HERSELF WARNING HER ABOUT JACKS???? WHEN SHE FINDS THAT LETTER, sHE’s GOING TO BE SO CONFLICTEDDD. What if she never loved jacks again 😭 i swear stephanie garber pls donttttt.

oh and before that. the scene where chaos (castor!!!?) bites evangeline and jacks arrived and just screams and holds her there????? and then he demands the queen to heal her??? and like he has the line of how nothing is of equal value to him?!!!? RHAT MEANS SO MANY THINFS.

BECAUZE… like yk how he originally wanted the stones to go back and fix his true love with that princess???? NO HE DIDNT. HE CHOSE EVANGELINE. BOY YOU TELLING ME YOU TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT HER WHEN YOU SAVFIFICD yOUR CHANCE TO FIND THIS OTHER GIRL.

I’m sorry. this… this series is so GOOD.

okay so

i’ve started shatter me by tahereh mafi. and i’m currently 127 pages in, chapter 21.

and i’m so confused.

like, firstly, the grammar in this book is super random. like i get that juliette is in the verge of insanity (?) and stuff, but it really messes with me. but after a bit i kinda got used to it, and if it kinda makes for an interesting mc??

second! i know im WAY too early in the series to say this (literally only chapter 21 of the first book 😭) but what is with this warner guy. like i’ve seen fanart and stuff of him and i kind of know that there’s going to be a relationship between him and juliette, but like he’s kind of an ass? like i love power and dangerous kind of love interests, but for some reason he kind of confuses me. at least he doesn’t confuse/annoy me as much as ADAM. Adam is super suspicious and he’s just. /$;&;??? like i thought he was going to be the main love interest, then he betrays her but then showers with her??? i’m sorry 😭 he hasn’t done anything that bad yet…but then again, i’m still super early in the book.
