Unpopular Opinion : Snape wasn’t the way he was because of Lily “rejecting” him. Snape was the way he was because of a lifetime abuse and bullying which affected his adult life

Why do you think Snape is more hated than Lucius, Bellatrix or any other villain ? It worries me that Snape is seen as more evil than other death eaters...
He’s difficult.
Lucius is an interesting aside.  I thought a very different narrative would unfold for him - he’s terrifying in those early books because despite his history, he wields a power over the Ministry which is instantly recognisable.  I expected that he’d be a major villain in the series, but he took a very different turn - a fascinating and wonderful turn, where he was very publicly dethroned…but that’s a rarity for a man of his standing.
Ultimately, Lucius isn’t regarded as fearsome or terrifying because he is rendered powerless - he’s imprisoned in Azkaban, his home is occupied, his family are punished for his misdeeds, and he’s reduced to running through Hogwarts hunting desperately for his child instead of fighting.  Lucius is a nobody - and despite his fervent belief in purism, Lucius is easily redeemed in fandom because he is utterly ineffective at any point that he meets Harry (he loses control of Dobby, he is imprisoned following the skirmish in OotP, and even Draco never bests Harry) and because he turns his back on the movement, even if he does so for his own selfish ends.
Lucius is portrayed as a character who adores his wife and his child, which makes his redemption all the more palatable; here is a man who is capable of love and affection, and all he needs is re-educating to rid him of his horrible beliefs…without acknowledging that both he and his wife hold despicable beliefs, and both indoctrinated their child.
Bellatrix is a case of ‘what you see is what you get’.  She isn’t developed from her role as sadistic killer; her affection is not for her husband, but for Voldemort - there’s nothing redeemable about her.  If you adore Bellatrix, it’s likely you adore her because she’s a villain.  Hating her is almost an eye-roll - of course you’d hate someone like Bellatrix, just like you’d hate Umbridge.
But Severus Snape is difficult.  He’s not lovable.  He’s not kind and lovely and attractive.  He’s not gentle and affectionate.  He doesn’t have a character who loves him - he doesn’t have a husband or a wife that we know of, or children who admire him.  His only affection is apparently saved for a long dead childhood friend who married his bully.  His reasons for defecting to the side of the light are rooted in his ex-friendship, and likely not because he was ideologically opposed to the Death Eaters (although this is a point of contention - it’s hard to extrapolate his full feelings from the text).  He’s horrible to Harry, he’s horrible to other students in Harry’s presence, he’s dark and sarcastic and appears to favour his own house.  He’s duplicitous by design, as his role of spy demands - and for the most of the series he’s harbouring his own grudges that don’t make sense until you reach the end, meaning that many readers perceive him differently on first read to their subsequent readings.
Nobody asks you to reevaluate Lucius.  Cursed Child arguably requests that you reevaluate Draco - but it’s very easy to see Draco as a manipulated child who has subsequently grown, aided by a very lovable son as a character.  Nobody asks you to reevaluate Bellatrix.  Cursed Child arguably requests that you don’t - posing Delphi in her role as villain, disrupting the calm world that has settled since Voldemort’s demise.
…but in the series itself, the series screams at you to reevaluate Snape.  “LOOK!” it yells, “YOU WERE WRONG!  LOOK!”  And most readers looked, and saw what the text was getting at.
But some readers can’t separate themselves from their first stance.  Some people don’t like to be wrong.  Some people don’t enjoy plot twists (although I’d argue it’s not that big of a twist; it was quite clearly telegraphed) - and I think some of the anguish stems from people setting their own real life hatred of their teachers onto the stern figure of Snape and then being disheartened at the idea of him being any sort of person that they should reconsider.  You only have to look at the simultaneous wailing over Snape whilst they raise Regulus and Slughorn and Narcissa as being emblems of Slytherin house, when each character is more problematic than the last.

Yes Mother!
- It all stated out as a joke.
- Minerva was basically rubbing the quidditch cup in his face when Gryffindor destroyed his snakes in the latest quidditch match. Severus was not in the mood. When she made another snide remark he lost it and loudly said “Yes, Mother.” in his most sarcastic and seething tone. It was louder than expected and all the noise in the great hall halted. Until Filius snorted, not quite able to hold in his chuckles.
- The next time Minerva pestered him about eating he smiled sweetly at her, “Of course Mother.”
- There were now rumours about whether Snape was actually McGonagall’s real son. The Slytherins began calling him Bat Dad behind his back and Granny Cat behind McGonagall’s.
- “Oh mother, look what my slytherins brought me.” He said as he all but rubbed the quidditch cup in her face.
- “I am not your mother.” She hissed as she noticed the students watching their exchange over dinner.
- Severus turned to Dumbledore. “It appears I have been disowned. Pity, I had my eye on all her scotch she keep locked up.”
- Severus sent her a mother’s day card unironically every year.
- She sent him a howler every time he did something bad.
- At the quidditch pitch, some gryffindor and slytherin were arguing.
“You can’t do that! Don’t aim at my face!”
“We’re practically family! This is what family do!”
This was going to turn angsty but let’s save that for another post.

Survey for Snapedom
1) Pro Snapers only. If you aren’t pro Snape, please keep scrolling.
2) Do not like and reblog this post at the same time, because it will muck up the results.
3) Participation is optional of course, but the more the better.
If you fit into one or more of these categories, reblog for yes.
If you fit into none of these categories, like for no.
If you aren’t sure go with you instinct.
Categories:
You have been/are a victim of bullying/abuse
You self-identify as being LGBTQIA
You have self-diagnosed/been officially diagnosed with depression
You have self-diagnosed/been officially diagnosed with PTSD
You have self-diagnosed/been officially diagnosed with autism/aspergers
You’re very sensitive to the emotions of those around you. Even if those people are trying to hide it
The reason I am allowing for self-diagnosis is because not everybody has the time or money to get an official one.
A message for those in the Snapedom who don’t like me/my opinions and refuse to participate purely out of spite:
Just know that I don’t dislike/hate you. Even if you think I do, I don’t. Know that if I saw you being slandered I would defend you, regardless of how much we may have fought in the past.
Your participation means something, it’s worth something (same goes for everybody else) because regardless of personal feelings, arguments and tension, you are part of the Snapedom; and the results wouldn’t be the same without you.
But it’s okay if you don’t want to.
To those who don’t want to participate for privacy reasons:
That’s fine. It’s okay of you don’t want to.
If you don’t want to participate for ANY reason, that’s fine. But I just want you to know your participation will be appreciated.

Snape: [taps quill]
McGonagall: [taps quill in response]
Umbridge: Stop that.
Snape: Stop what?
Umbridge: You’re talking about me in morse code.
McGonagall: Yes, that’s what we’re doing. In our very limited free time, we took a class on a very outdated, very unnecessary form of communication just so we could talk about you in front of you.
[later]
McGonagall, to Flitwick: That’s… exactly what we did.

Luna Lovegood: I made a marshmallow Professor Snape.
Luna Lovegood: See? His arms are crossed because he’s mad at all the marshmallow students for annoying him.
Luna Lovegood: You like it?
Severus Snape, choked up: It’s fine.

Snaters—no one is trying to make you like Snape. Snape fans—no one is trying to make you hate him. Can we please end all of the “You will never make me feel this way about him” nonsense? Literally NO ONE is trying to convert you to a specific way of thinking. Just stick to groups of like-minded people and air your opinions there.

How does Snape’s “bottle game, brew glory, and even stopper death” speech not raise any alarms? Surely some innocent 11-year-old wrote home and told their parents about their potions professor spewing death eater propoganda.

I have come to the conclusion that every time Snape does something it’s either
Out of love
Out of spite
For the aesthetic
