I see one more sort of “Steve wasn’t all that important” and I’ll absolutely loose my mind. Almost all of the guys don’t have that much time on page or on the screen, so it isn’t really much of a justification. Even if you don’t want to view him as his own character of importance his absence would take a ton from Soda and some from gang itself. He absolutely does contribute both through his actual moments and things Pony brings up about him -> way he talks about all of the guys and their varying experiences as greasers, homelife, friends etc
