So about Noe. Who is he?
Based on stuff up to Chapter 48 so beware of spoilers.
Disclaimer: Please take with a grain of salt and caution. I am just an average reader, so I can be absolutely wrong, but I wanna talk about it.
What do we know about Noe?
Appeared out of nowhere in a snowy blizzard
Is only and last Archiviste alive (even though they died out supposedly?)
Was found and raised by humans
Lived with them until they died
Got caught by kidnappers
Sold at the auction to De Sade Grandpa
Lives with De Sades
Sent to Paris by teacher (Grandpa De Sade)
Met Vanitas and you know the rest
Let’s start with an elephant in the room. Dark skin and white hair is a trait believed to be of Archivistes and no other clan. Guess who else has dark skin and white hair?
VOTBM - Vanitas/Vampire of the Blue Moon
Yeah, I know, but hear me out. It is not ONLY that,
As I mentioned in my post about Vanitas, we have no idea what does getting rewritten mean. But, if VOTBM got rewritten into “Noe” and was secretly an Archiviste, that might be possible. Archivistes were wiped out. It is just noone expected VOTBM to be one. That would explain random Archiviste appearing out of nowhere after them being wiped out. Noe does not have any memories until blizzard, so no one knows where he came from. Himself included. At least for now...
Other things that might be hints for this:
Noe constantly remarks that he does not like Vanitas - he wouldn’t like someone trying to get revenge on him on subconscious level
Got jealous when Jeanne drank Vanitas’s blood – he wouldn’t like someone drinking blood from someone he marked
Noe will remember everything and if Vanitas is trying to get revenge on him, well, they are in direct conflict which leads to “Noe kills Vanitas”
Or Noe “killed” Vanitas because he gave him these powers to kill/rewrite himself in the first place, which Vanitas does in the end, thus Noe was not able to save him from that
There was a talk about not grabbing a hand and about being killed. This is contradicting to be honest. If you did not grab a hand you do not directly kill a person, you haven’t saved a person. It is two different things. So I wonder why Noe still states he “kills Vanitas with his own hands” yet he regrets “not grabbing his hand”. Maybe these are 2 different situations whatsoever. At first there is a fall of Vanitas (yet he does not die) and then Noe “kills” him? Why would Noe regret the fall specifically?
Anyway, back to other points.
Archiviste, if you will drink my blood I’ll kill you – Vanitas knows who Noe is and does not want him to remember anything which will probably happen if Noe drinks his blood.
Also another thing that is contradicting. So Vanitas says his past is not remarkable and is not anything special. Yet he was so against of Noe drinking his blood? The question here is is the problem really the power of Archiviste and Vanitas does not want Noe to see something (meaning Vanitas is downplaying again and lying), or is it something else?
You’ve got a wrong idea – is what Vanitas says to Noe when Noe is impressed by him saving curse bearers – of course the idea is wrong, because Vanitas is saving someone Noe cursed himself. If he is the one who cursed vampires in the first place, It is not a “good” thing them being saved for Noe.
De Sade Grandpa knew that Noe is VOTBM that is why he bought him. One can argue that being last Archiviste alive is more than enough for this, but honestly Shapeless one is highly suspicious, so I assume he has a plan for Noe and that might include VOTBM.
Grandpa De Sade sent him to Paris to find the books - to find HIS books! Honestly, this is a part which has been bugging me. Why Grandpa was interested in sending specifically Noe to take a look at the books like at all? That would explain it.
Likes blue moon, while other vampires fear it
It would be really interesting to see how the bite of Misha end now. If this theory is a bit valid, Misha is his kin and was marked by him as well, so something aside flashback needs to happen. Noe should feel something. And maybe THAT was the reason why Vanitas freaked out so much when he heard that Misha contacted Noe.
And that would mean Noe is pretty much responsible to what happened to Louis. 🙃
I wonder if rewritten means getting completely new true name? That would make sense.
There are also some things against this theory:
Noe technically has red eyes and red blood unlike he is supposedly then should have blue eyes and blue blood, but again, we do not know what getting rewritten does to you, so anything could happen. We did not see eyes of VOTBM as of yet though and in color.
Dark skin of Noe is brownish, but VOTBM seems more grayish/blueish in color illustrations (same for the Queen btw, so there is smth as well). Though this one is also debatable as it differs per illustration.
Time line does not add up. At the moment it seems like Noe and Vanitas were same age when Vanitas was together with VOTBM and Noe was taken into by De Sade Grandpa. Though that is based on assumption that they kind of look same age in those flashbacks, yet we do not exactly know when these things happened. And what exactly do we know about vampire aging? In fact, if we take a look it is inconsistent across the series. We have vampires that look young adultish for centuries like Jeanne, we have Ruthven who looks more adultish for also centuries, and we have Chloe who still looks like a girl for centuries. And then there are De Sades like Dominique and Noe who seem to age closer to humans. And also Luca. Where I am going with this is that when it comes to vampires looks does not always match the age. This depends on how exactly vampire age and if there is a possibility to interfere with time via formulas. I know the ages were specified as well as 18 for Vanitas and 19 for Noe. But for example one can argue was Oz 15 or 25 in PH. And both would be correct, cause that depends on how you count. What I try to say here, is that we might not have the whole picture, but only one side of it. But I agree and understand that that is a point against and it does not add up at the moment.
Honestly, it is kind of tricky with colors cause we do not know how “correct” they are and if there is an intention behind these colors or it was simply an artistic choice.
Can we have an anime plz? It would help with color definition.
So all in all, this might be completely wrong, who knows. But I hope you enjoyed.

Vanitas and what happened to VOTBM?
Based on stuff up to Chapter 48 so beware of spoilers.
Disclaimer: Please take with a grain of salt and caution. I am just an average reader, so I can be absolutely wrong, but I wanna talk about it.
What do we know about Vanitas?
His parents were killed by a Vampire
He got picked up by church
Caught attention of Dr Moreau and became No 69 and met Misha
Was saved by VOTBM (with Misha)
Later he “killed” VOTBM and got separated from Misha for whatever reason (thought Misha was dead? But instead Misha lost an arm I suppose, smth large happened when Vanitas “killed” VOTBM)
Currently, attempting his revenge plan on VOTBM and saves curse bearers
Met Noe and so the story started
Vanitas has a habit of making things look less significant than they actually are. Like “I am just an average human being”. We all know he is not just an average human being.
So when Noe is curious about Vanitas’s past in catacombs Vanitas sums up his life similarly in a simpler way than it probably was. Parents got killed by vampire, got into church and then Moreau and now here. It is not a lie, but something important was definitely omitted.
Who exactly were his parents?
And which vampire killed him? Was it VOTBM? Why would VOTBM do that?
Reaction Vanitas gives is quite strange. He was obedient child-experiment of Moreau and told that he never cried or complained, anything. And these kids went through torture. But he does start more than complaining. He goes into pure rage when he finds out he got given VOTBM blood swearing to kill these people.
Vanitas is known to hate both humans and vampires. His problem is not vampires. It is VOTBM specifically.
Is it simple revenge for parents? Since it is Jun, I have my doubts and it is probably something more than that. But something happened. And perhaps even before Vanitas and VOTBM met. Which is strange. Why would he hate someone he did not meet? Or have they met but VOTBM did not remember him? I bet VOTBM would remember Vanitas if they have met before. Something’s off here. Unless VOTBM recognizing Vanitas was omitted un purpose.
Crack theory time - what if Vanitas is/was connected to the Red Moon clan and that is why he hates VOTBM? Something like Vanitas got raised by Vampires of Red Moon and they became curse bearers, got executed and that is a reason to hate VOTBM.
Anyway, seems like Vanitas wanted revenge on VOTBM before he got saved by him. Instead he got saved by VOTBM and couldn’t get his revenge, because VOTBM died before Vanitas could get that revenge. But not out of hands of Vanitas even though Misha claims so. More so, VOTBM likely to have died because VOTBM cared for Vanitas. That is why Vanitas sees Jeanne and Noe as weak. They similarly risk themselves over those whom they care about, even if technically they are an “enemy”.
VOTBM had a death flag in the flashbacks as well. VOTBM:
Passed the knowledge
Hoped Vanitas would have someone that would love him when VOTBM is not there
Seems like VOTBM expected not to be around soon.
Whatever happened to VOTBM is not death as we expect it as well. Because:
Why would Vanitas keep wanting to have revenge on an actually dead person? Or maybe Vanitas knows VOTBM will return?
Apparently marks disappear when their holder dies (example – Astolfo’s marks) or at least vampires can tell if the holder is still alive. And VOTBM mark is still there and vampires still freak out about VOTBM. Even though VOTBM supposed to be “dead”? Conclusion – VOTBM is not dead.
Ruthven had “died” according to Marquis Machina, but also he kind of did not. Shortly after it was confirmed not to be true. Then why go all the way to put such a scene in the first place? Doesn’t seem random. Feels like there should be a purpose for this. That is why this “death” thing in VNC universe is suspicious as hell.
Something similar might happen to Vanitas in the future. Which is meant by Noe killing Vanitas. Vanitas says “I won’t die even if I am not with you, Noe” to Noe in chapter one (if I did not misunderstand). Sounds familiar? Yup. Similar to what VOTBM have said to Vanitas. Meaning whatever will happen to Vanitas is similar to what happened to VOTBM. VOTBM did not talk about death, but about “not being here”.
But what is happening to Vanitas?
We know what already.
He is getting rewritten bit by bit when using powers.
So get rewritten and you kinda die, but not really.
Is that what happened to VOTBM? Ruthven? Will happen to Vanitas? Anyone else? Did they get rewritten?
Getting rewritten is a concept you can really turn into anything you can imagine.

Why is MochiJun being slept on?
It is a valid question. I mean, this woman pops up superb art with superb plot each month already for more than a decade constantly on a regular basis. That is something that should be recognized.
I want to talk about this. Why is that?
Let’s start with Pandora Hearts:
It is hard to summarize the story in the 1st place. If you would do this it would be something like Alice in the Wonderland inspired story where protagonist Oz gets thrown into Abyss because sin and meets Alice and she has no memories and is a chain and they form a contract...
PH has a rough start. It is a lot of concepts that are yet to be connected. When they do it is awesome, but reader needs to get there. It is complicated to explain. It is complicated to sell, cause the story shines the most on the pay off (which it in fact should), but not the beginning. This makes the story not easy to get into.
The irony here is that modern stories are exact OPPOSITE of this. Easy to sell with interesting settings and concepts, but pay offs pretty much all of the time are being underwhelming if not pure disappointment. That what gets most of the series overhyped. Cool concept and setting is not enough. Just cause author got an interesting setting, does not mean it will pay off as it should.
Another reason would be Alice in the Wonderland inspiration. Even though Jun made her own thing with this, there are more than enough of average (or even bad) Alice in the Wonderland inspired stories. This is enough to throw people off.
So it is kind of you either skip/drop the series or adore it and no in between.
Now the Case Study of Vanitas:
So...vampires. Honestly, there is so much vampire stuff out there. This is same thing as with Alice. There would be enough of people skipping this just because vampires. To know that it is not your typical vampire story you need to know who is Mochizuki Jun and how she handled “Alice in the Wonderland”. Which is the reason why mostly its her fans and readers of Pandora Hearts that read VNC.
The good thing though is that the start of Case Study is a LOT more accessible, than the one of Pandora Hearts. It delivers interesting concept without overwhelming the reader and tells you “it won’t be that your typical vampire story” and keeps you highly entertained. Jun definitely grew not only as artist, but as a writer as well.
So I really hope VNC will get anime. That one first episode will attract and hook people which are not familiar with Jun’s work and realize that maybe things are not as they seem. To the point that some probably will give Pandora Hearts another (or first) chance learning how Jun writes things.
And steampunk Paris is a great addition. Cause it is cool.
So my point is, we need VNC anime. It is generally easier to sell, easier to attract and hook people with it. And then some doors to PH might open as well.

Agreed. MochiJun is underrated.
“I don’t know if this counts as a confession. With the author’s ability in writing such intricate and compelling stories, I’m… heartbroken at the fact that the anime-manga-novel community is relatively sleeping on VNC. I WISH it would get more attention. I WISH I could do something to make the fandom grow, but I don’t know where to start. Imagine all the new content, fan arts, and even an anime adaptation if we’re lucky. It’s true that bigger fandoms often bring some toxicity, but to me it’s just like reading a story written by a friend that is so great you want to show it to the world, only to feel powerless because it goes unnoticed. You don’t find gems like VNC everyday. Can we do something do advertise it?“

Case Study of Vanitas needs more attention and love.
Can’t believe it’s been 5 years already since VNC has started. Hopefully anime will follow soon. Highly underestimated read. It’s such a shame this manga is being so slept on.
