During COVID -19 I’ve been experimenting with new methods of creating with paper, and challenging myself to think sculpturally. At this point in my artist career, my work has become quite diverse in style and form, but continuously focused on social and environmental justice. For 10th Street Gallery, I decided to bring a bit of color, beauty and hope to the east side community of my old neighborhood and feature my experimental work as a drive-by exhibition. Thank you Herron Galleries for the lovely feature on my ongoing solo exhibition at the Marsh Gallery at Herron school of Art and Design. Since graduating in 2006, I had dreamed of showcasing my PapelPicado inspired work, as an alumni. This exhibition features my research and lifelong experiences and knowledge of immigration and the heavy burdens of being on the “wrong” side and looking for a way out. The work expresses conversations had with asylum seekers while doing one of 2019 artist residency with IUPUI Arts&Humanities, where it took me back to my hometown Brownsville Texas. I revisited my childhood home, it was literally a mile away from the Rio Grande River and the other side, Matamorros, Tamaulipas Mexico, the birthplace of my father. The work focuses on asylum seekers experience inside the Port Isabel ICE detention center. I am so sorry that many didn’t get to experienced it in person, like so many cancelled events, my solo exhibition at Herron was affected too. This exhibition is especially important now more than ever, where asylum seekers within ICE detention centers are extremely vulnerable to COVID and ICE officials continue to hunt down the most vulnerable during COVID. Amazing sites in my backyard. I don’t feel much like spending time inside the studio nowadays. I’ve been ok just watching series after series of HBO, Hulu and some Netflix. I’ve been cooking a lot, creating new vegetarian dishes, and venturing new receipts of desserts. Went on a drive by for a COVID testing after experiencing a scary episode of the flu yesterday, fever, massive headache, nausea and vomiting. Even though I have been socially distant for almost 4 weeks, constantly disinfecting my home and wearing face masks. I’ve been in my studio most days and I wasn’t sure why I felt so sick. I’m feeling so much better, but these are scary times and I couldn’t bare to contract it onto my immediate family. In the Studio Rediscovering #googleartsandcultureapp while working on a special papelpicado design requested for a tattoo. This piece is the first of its kind where the design will feature symmetrically both positive and negatives. Every piece of paper that has been cut out is used to create only the negative space of one side. The cutting process has become second nature but the process of using each negative cut is much more tedious and time consuming but it’s worth it and I’m excited to see the finished piece. Unseen Exhibition due to COVID cancellation Here’s a few pictures of my ongoing exhibition which opened in the most of the COVID social distancing. Immigrant Denied: Border Elegy Hope&Loss opened March 11, 2020 at Marsh Gallery at Herron School of Art and Design The shadows behind the work is metaphoric message of unseen and forgotten souls inside ICE detention centers nationwide. This exhibition matters now more than ever as many asylum seekers are at the most risk of contacting COVID while the evils of ICE agents continue to recklessly Hunt people down placing them in overcrowded cages. Immigrant Denied exhibit will be videotaped by PBS WFYI as a visual tour.
