A little something just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center is currently working on a NEH grant to process and digitize a portion of The Wade Hall Collection of American Letters.

Many of the letters contain messages of love from the sender to the recipient, but recently we came across something fitting for Valentine’s day that had nothing to do with the letter’s content.   

Hidden in an unassuming piece of correspondence to the author’s sibling we found this wonderful watermark.

We’d love to know more about this stationary.  It appears to be something that was readily available for some time, as we found paper with the exact same watermark in a different collection that predates this letter by two decades.

Happy Presidents Day! Take a peek at the 3D model created by the folks in our digital lab of this Abraham Lincoln sculpture. This bronze bust was created by American sculpture, Gutzon Borglum, who is best known for his work at Mount Rushmore.  

If you would like to see the bronze in person, you’ll find him hanging around the lobby of the University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center.

Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Inc. records now available

The collection guide for the Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Inc. (FAH) records is now available on ExploreUK!

The FAHE records are the final collection in the “Action in Appalachia: Revealing Public Health, Housing, and Community Development Records in the UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center�� project. The two-year project, funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant, proposed to make available 645 cubic feet of War on Poverty-era records from Appalachian social justice organizations.

The Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Inc. was founded in 1980 with the mission to eliminate poverty in Appalachia. FAHE focuses on public health, education, and affordable housing, using an interconnected group of non-profits across the Appalachian Region, including in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia. The collection contains reports, minutes, correspondence, and program files, which document FAHE's work (from 1980 until 1992) on community development and affordable housing in the Appalachian Region.

 The Lizzie Hardin diary, M-181

The Lizzie Hardin diary (dated 1850-1860; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) consists of a microfilm copy of a diary kept by Lizzie Hardin of Harrodsburg, Ky. during the Civil War. Though she began the diary in Virginia, it was written primarily during the time she lived in Harrodsburg. In the diary she describes a raid near Harrodsburg by John Hunt Morgan in 1862 as well as other war-related incidents. At the top of many pages are portraits of soldiers that have been cut out of another source and pasted in the diary. Robert G. Wallis scrapbook, 46m7

WBLG Audio Tape Collection, 74av03

The WBLG Audio Tape Collection (7 cubic feet, 97 items in 14 boxes; dated 1954-1977) is comprised of ninety-seven 1/4" reel to reel audio tapes. These tapes contain broadcasts of U.K. sporting events, political talks from around the Commonwealth, and a bi-weekly summary of the news events in Kentucky covering 1968-1977.

Digital images of 12 personal scrapbooks regarding the life of former Governor Paul Patton. Mallevs maleficarvm The Malleus Maleficarum, usually translated as the Hammer of Witches, is the best known and the most important treatise on witchcraft.

Bruce Ferguson scrapbook, M-133 The Bruce Ferguson scrapbook (dated 1900-1902; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 reel) was assembled by William Behringer and contains newspaper clippings about the assassination of William Goebel and subsequent political events. The clippings were mostly pulled from the Cincinnati Enquirer and Cincinnati Post and were pro-Goebel. The scrapbook also contains clippings about a Frankfort duel between Ethelbert Scott and Colonel D. G. Colson which left three dead, including Scott, and four wounded. The volume concludes with a number of engravings taken from a German language newspaper. The Carolina Housewife William Hayes coal mining scrapbooks, 2016ms029 The William Hayes coal mining scrapbooks (dated 1967-1997, 1.35 cubic feet, 2 boxes) consists of two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings created by William Hayes, a reclamation inspector, about coal mining in Kentucky.

Harry Dean Stanton (July 14, 1926 - Sept. 15, 2017)

Today we mourn the loss of Kentucky native, Harry Dean Stanton, seen below performing in a production of The Beggars Opera at the University of Kentucky’s Guignol Theatre.  As a student at the University of Kentucky Stanton studied journalism and radio arts.

It’s Pardon Day

September 8th is Pardon Day and we thought we’d share this act of forgiveness. In 1882 Lexington’s notorious madam, Belle Brezing, was indicted by the Grand Jury. Her crime?  “Keeping a bawdy House.”   A few months later Ms. Brezing received this pardon from then Governor Luke P. Blackburn.
