Honestly, the reason I like this movie, and this scene in particular so much, it's cause this is the closest we've ever gotten to seeing Kankuro flirting with a woman, or with anyone really. Though it's a tiny bit creepy how she like "flirts" with him and calls him "sweetie", given that we don't know how old she is, and she looks like an adult (she does the same with Shikamaru later on too, when she calls him handsome). But ignoring that creepiness, I really liked their interactions? Yeah, it's a movie filler, Nart movies bad, blah, blah, idc. I think this is the only one I've ever liked, purely because of all the spotlight Kank gets in it. And I liked seeing him interacting with another woman that's not his sister for once, like that's cool. Poor boy, looked like he was enjoying their fight and banter, and looked completely heartbroken, when he saw her transforming into an ugly beast, like "what happened to her"? The tone in which he says it, it really sounds like: "nooo, you were pretty before, go back to being pretty". And it also gives us the barest of ideas, of how Kank would be and act, when he's being flirted with. Again, when she called him sweety (again, let's just for a minute ignore the probable age gap and solely focus on his reaction). He fucking smiles. His reaction is one of pleasure and happiness. He asks her to not leave, and when she does, he runs after her. So Kankuro enjoys being praised, and doesn’t shy away from the compliments. It's a core trait of his, that he hates being underestimated, and even leans on the cocky side. Again, I like this a lot. Definitely a movie worth watching, if you like the sand sibs, though Temari doesn't appear in it for some odd inexplicable reason.

I dunno if you want fanfic recs, but I feel like all Naruto fans at least to have heard of Dreaming of Sunshine, by Silver Queen. It's a Naruto SI fic (well, THE Naruto SI fic, really - if you notice similarities to other fics in the early chapters its because DoS invented those tropes) where the main is Shikamaru's sister. Features world building, fixing a lot of Kishi's plot problems, fixing Sasuke, and theatreNerd!Kankuro. (Consider at least reading the sand sib chapters, if nothing else.)

Thanks for the rec! I actually think I ~may~ have read part of this or at least someone else’s fanfic set in the same universe cause I swear I’ve seen the OC character in a fic I’ve read before. This does sound interesting so I may check it out but tbqh, the longer a fic is the less likely I am to read it. Plus I generally only read fics that are set in the same universe, though I am interested to see how the author portrays the sand sibs.

I say we need another novel centered around the sand sibs, one that's actually good, not like Gaara hidden. Like GH is decent enough, but what ruins it is the unnecessary love interest plot they had to shove in, cause ofc, not even Gaara could escape the hetero-sexualization of the series. If the people in charge of the novels/Naruto movies/anime, don't want to animate Gaara hidden, or give us a sand sibs spin-off, the least they can do is another novel. One free of love interests and romantic plots, and is completely centered on how much these 3 love each other.

Really wish we had more Naruto movies or novels centered on the blank period, but not on random missions or that stuff.

I want to see Naruto learning about politics and Kakashi struggling to build a new Konoha now that most of its shadows are gone.

I want to hear about the how Ino, Shikamaru and Choji came back from the war as clan leaders and how they transitioned to their new roles while still mourning the lost of their parents.

I want to read about Tenten and Lee adjusting to the fact Neji is not there, that every other team came back with their three members but they didn't.

I want to know what the civilians did, if Hinata and Hanabi pushed for some reformations on the clan, about the kids who went home without parents and if Naruto saw them and thought of himself, if Kakashi made new laws to avoid future cases of kids ending up like Sasuke or Naruto, lonely and rejected for no good reason.

Do they have ptsd about the tsukuyomi? What about the first Kage reunion where they fight post war? How often did they have to deal with people stopping them to talk about the war, since they were heroes? When they sat to decide how the story would be told, who was there? What did they say?

I want to read about Sasuke going back to the Uchiha compound and Naruto staring at Minato's face on the Hokage mountain and reading Obito's name again on the memorial and Sakura an endless string of ghosts crossing her door on the hospital, kids and teens and adults searching a deeper medicine, something to close the wounds the war left behind. Did Sai ever paint how the world is after it almost ended? Did Yamato ever tell anyone who wished he wasn't the one taking care of Orochimaru?

I don't know, it's cool to see their kids growing up and seeing them as parents, but I want to read about the healing and the step by step, waking up to realize the war was won but your body doesn't know it, going out to the whiplash of seeing a new world developing, childhood over, innocence lost, do you dare to dream about new things just yet?

deidara is one of those double sculptor/performance artists.. he doesn’t have a website, jsut an instagram that’s half pics of his beautiful ceramic pieces, half grainy videos of him smashing them with a bat and screaming (he’s always pissed that the ceramic pics get more likes bc the REAL art is the DESTRUCTION and no one understands)

konan makes beautiful detailed sculptures entirely of paper, sometimes coated in resin and gold foil. she’s moo’s #1 customer like her business cards are luxe w lasercut design with embossing and spot gold but. they only link to her deviantart which she still uses exclusively (tho she also sells on etsy)

sai is a very classically trained sumi and watercolor painter. his paintings are very realistic and beautiful, but he has,, no idea how to represent himself. his business cards just say “sai” and his website is one page with absolutely no contact information. my favorite is @yondaiime ’s hc where his attempts at self promotion are so uncomfortable and bad that everyone thinks he’s a bot

sasori’s artist presence is p exclusive to his tumblr - he’s a big name bjd blogger who goes by a pseudonym and never shows his face but gets commissioned a lot for his hyperrealistic mods and faceups. his dolls are kind of uncanny valleyish in how human they look and unknown to his fanbase they look eerily similar to his friends irl

kankuro is also a bjd blogger (big sasori fan) but instead of focusing on cosmetic appeal and keeping dolls/puppets in glass cases, he’s a stopmotion animator bc he really likes seeing them move (his puppets are kinda creepy and made mostly w recycled dolls but his motion is great) he owns and wears mostly black for shooting in the tiny studio in his apt which is also full of literal garbage that he thinks could be useful. doesn’t have much on his vimeo, he never feels like his stuffs “ready” enough to post

inojin is a baby artist on tumblr who gets really popular for his Pokemon fanart and it kinda goes to his head but he’s having fun & updates his nuzlocke comic on smackjeeves every week

He’s a sexual harasser and spys on women. He’s constantly making comments about women and their bodies as well as literally spying on them without their consent in the hot springs (his “research”). It’s predatory and disgusting.

He frequently demonstrates pedophilic behavior. With Konan, a girl he mentored and in some ways raised, he told her upon leaving to hit him up when she turned 18. With naruto, he had him turn into a naked woman and he “studied” him before agreeing to train him. Iirc Naruto actually defaults to using his “sexy jutsu” when he wants something from Jiraiya because it makes him pay attention

He’s mean to naruto. He’s constantly stealing his money and leaving him behind to fuck around and get drunk. He also abandoned him for the first 12 years of his life... maybe naruto forgave but I sure haven’t. The spy ring excuse only goes so far. It’s called visiting, sending letters, making yourself even some what tangible.

He has naruto — A MINOR — read and edit his porn novels without pay while he steals narutos money. What the fuck.

It’s all just brushed off or taken as a joke and that sends a HORRIBLE message. Jiraiya literally peeps on women and had naruto transform into a sexy naked lady as a child and spends a lot of his time making pornography (THAT HE HAD NARUTO EDIT). Despite this, Jiraiya is never treated as predatory or harmful, his sexual harassment is meant to be funny and is often played off as an “oh that’s just how he is haha” endearing trait that he has. It also bothers me when juxtaposed with Orochimarus treatment like the difference between the two (besides village allegiance) is literally that Jiraiya is straight and Orochimaru is always presented far more ambiguously/antagonistic and often gay-coded. I don’t care for that.

When women freak out and beat him up for spying on them its supposed to be funny. Literally their rage is considered funny. None of them consented to him “studying” them and for him to do so is... just disgusting. To treat his peeping as a joke and then their rage as a joke... sends a terrible message

He’s a hypocrite. He tells naruto to give up on sasuke despite the fact he NEVER gave up on Tsunade and I don’t think he ever really truly gave up on Orochimaru either
