Is there sound in Space? Yes.
joeyculoper27 asked me a question recently regarding sounds in space. Is it possible? If so, how?
To understand how and why, first you need to know what sound is: it’s a vibration (in the form of a “longitudinal wave”) through a medium of particles. Our ears can pick up certain frequencies of waves/vibrations in the air:
The vibrations of particles, if within the range of wave-frequency of 20 Hz to 20kHz, will be detected by our ears. This movement in the air is then reported to and interpreted by our brains as the thing we call “noise”.
In space, there’s no atmosphere. There’s nothing to propagate, for the most part, an acoustic sound. Space is a vacuum.
Except that that’s not, in the most extreme sense, true. There are exceptions.
If a wavelength of sound is so long (aka if the sound is so “deep”) that it could stretch from one particle of hydrogen floating through space to another, it could in theory travel as an actual acoustic noise through space.
There is such a thing traveling through space: a supermassive black hole in the Perseus Cluster is emitting a belch, a million billion times lower than what we could detect with our ears. It’s the deepest sound ever found. Here it is.
In general and for the vast majority of circumstances, sound doesn’t propagate through space. Certainly nothing anywhere near the range of human hearing.
There’s also noises of other forms in the universe. If you had radio antennas for ears, you’d find that the universe is one collective racket. NASA collected some of the radio songs being broadcasted by different places in the solar system such as Neptune, Saturn, Saturn’s rings, Jupiter etc. Here it is, enjoy.

Couple of things: School has been crazy busy, and it's starting to wind down a little bit. Don't worry, it'll kick up in gear here pretty soon. Finals, you know. Another thing is I want more writing to do! Hit me up if you want to do something longer with me. Short threads are fine, too.
Finally, I TURN 21 ON MONDAY, HELL YEAH.

Carlos shook his head, pecking his forehead affectionately. "Of course you like that option. I finally get to have my oaky tones all over the sound waves." He laughed, and wagged a finger at his boyfriend. "Uh-uh, I wouldn't have let you escape. You're sick, sir. You're not going anywhere."
"Cecil, you're sick. I'm making you chicken soup, stay in bed. Please. Stay in our bed. Here." Carlos wrapped Cecil up in blankets, tucking him into a blanket fort. "I will be right back with the soup."
My character is very sick but refuses to stay in bed. What does your character do to keep them there?
Cecil refused to be sick. Blatant denial worked so well for so many things, surely it could handle this, too. “I’m not sick,” he insisted. “I feel fine.” He tried to kick the blankets off of him, and frowned when it just got them tangled around his feet. “I don’t want soup. Let me up.”

"You sound like my boyfriend. The science guy part, anyway." Carlos shook his head. Knowing your fate would seal it in the end. Better to have free will, or the illusion thereof instead of constantly waiting for death.
"There's not much to sight-see here. There are some tourist attractions, of course, but you have to actively search in order to find Night Vale. So, other than that, why are you here?"
Tumblr media
Bill flickered back to his normal color and consistency,      and raised his hands up in a shrugging gesture (he didn’t      really have shoulders to speak of, so it was the best he      could do).
“Whatever you say, science guy. It could be pretty exciting, though.”
Exciting for him, anyways. As much as revealing a glimmer of      the future to an unsuspecting mortal ever was.
"I’m from everywhere. As for why I’m here,” he shrugged again. "Sight-seeing? Sure! That sounds right. Sight-seeing.”

Carlos smiled shyly, a hint of a blush coloring his cheeks. He closed the door behind him, locking it. The swan took the offered arm, nodding. "Yes, we should be off. He followed Kevin down the stairs of his apartment to the car. "Of course you look presentable!"
He was silent for the most part, having a hard time vocalizing his thoughts.

Carlos sputtered, shaking his head with a small, "What?!" That was not the intention of his survey! "No, I'd rather not. I would focus on that specific point in time, though time isn't real and the universe is continually expanding. I wanted to know where you are from, the population there, what brings you to Night Vale, that sort of thing."
Tumblr media
"Sure, I can answer some questions!"
He could answer a lot of questions. Not all of them were      questions that needed to be answered, but that was okay. It      was funny to watch the answers drive people insane.
"You wanna know the exact date and time of your death?"

Carlos kept the machine on, continuing to watch the plasma flickering inside. The fact Jake appeared interested only kept up his confidence in his invention.
"It can run all day and all night. Every day of the year. It would need some downtime once every two years to make sure nothing is cracking or needing replacement. The first year would be downtime once every three months to make sure it is all working properly, and to do proper maintenance." Carlos smiled.
"While I've had it here in the lab, turning on for three weeks out of the month, I've made several adjustments to make sure it works properly. The only reason we were on grid was to prepare to show you this."
Proper Inventions ||
Jake cocked a very interested brow.
"Hm," he said simply. His pen scrawled over paper furiously but his face was unchanged. "Hm," he said.
It was impressive, of course. The fact that the thing turned on at all was a first. Jake had grown accustomed to scientists looking for loans but their projects conveniently and unexplainably refusing to work on the day of a demonstration. This, however? This had promise.
"And how long can this run? How often would it need maintenance? Talk to me."

When Carlos was invited to the masquerade, he was surprised to say the least. And while he enjoyed his talks with Kevin (more so than his discussions with the damn doctor), it was still shocking. He expected Kevin to take one of his coworkers, an intern even. He wasn't even an employee!
Though, when all was said and done, he and Kevin discussed and coordinated their outfits, at least enough so that it was obvious. His clothing was mostly white, though the accents of yellow would help tie him in with Kevin's clothing.
He took his time with dressing, carefully applying each layer of clothing to his body. Carlos wasn't fond of the peacoat, but it would stay. There were worse things, terrible, horrible things. He wouldn't wear a shawl. It seemed, too concealing, in his opinion. Besides, everything else was covered. White gloves concealed his hands.  Carlos' mask was heavy, the metalwork weighing it down. The ivory color was lined with gold filigree, small bright pearls dotted upon the gold. But it was the largest piece, a metal swan curling above his right eye. Its feathers covered part of his ear, the metal split into thin wires. There was a slight pressure on his cheek, as part of the metalwork reached just below the angle of his cheek.
It was truly an elaborate piece, and words alone could not describe it. He was proud of himself for choosing that piece.
The knocking on his door announced Kevin's arrival. Carlos took one last look at himself in the mirror, smiling at his reflection. He hurried off to the door, opening up to greet Kevin.
"Yes, I'm more than ready. You look fantastic! Do I appear presentable?" Carlos' smile widened into a grin as he looked over Kevin's choice in clothes.
The Swan Prince
He and Carlos had kept in touch after his initial re-education. Of course they did, it simply wouldn’t be productive for two happy, well-working employees to not be in contact with one another! Over time and several more pleasant “talks”, Kevin received an invitation to the StrexCorp masquerade, a mandatory invitation, with the added bonus of bringing along a guest of his choice.
So, of course he invited Carlos to tag along with him.
Kevin wasn’t sure if Carlos technically counted as a Strex employee as of yet, but either way, he made absolutely certain the scientist was going to be in attendance, even going so far as to plan out their outfits with him. Eventually, the day of the masquerade arrived and Kevin made his way over to Carlos’ home to ensure he was dressed properly before they went to it.
He arrived clad in yellow, accents of white present on his light, buttoned peacoat, slacks, and sturdy gloves. Over his shoulders was a shawl that was covered in soft, pure white feathers, much like the collar of the bright yellow shirt beneath his coat, though the shawl was made of long primaries whereas the collar was composed of puffy down. His mask, the centerpiece of his outfit, looked like a bird skull of some indeterminable aviary creature, the beak hooking down low to somewhat conceal the grin on his face. Other than intricate golden swirls and drawings of the sun surrounding the eye sockets, it looked to be a skull bleached pure white by the callous heat of the desert sun.
Knowing Kevin, it may very well have been just that.
The radio host giggled ecstatically as he knocked on Carlos’ door, rocking back and forth on his heels. “Are you all ready for the masquerade, my swan?”

"Oh. Okay. I'm getting a ride back, correct? I can't really walk the entire way in this heat." Carlos returned the smile, waiting for someone else to grab him. He was glad it wasn't a long talk, but it was still a little weird.
"Bye, Kevin."
