August DWC 2025 Day 2 - Layer, Wither
Tumblr media
The stew was already slow-simmering when Reyindora knocked lightly on Zenith’s cottage door before allowing herself inside. “You made bread,” a hint of approval in her voice.
“You requested bread, and I said I would.” Zenith turned to offer his sister a warm smile. “I am a man of my word.”
She hung her cloak carefully by the door and glanced around. The table was already set with bowls, fresh thyme in a jar, and a folded linen napkin at her place. “It smells incredible in here,” she stepped up beside him as he stirred the stew pot, giving him a one-armed hug. “It’s a shame you never pursued cooking professionally.”
“Some hobbies are better left at just that,” Zenith murmured, ladling the hearty mixture into two bowls. They ate in comfortable silence at first, the thick stew and warm bread filling the room with that particular peace that only comes from shared history. Outside, the last light faded through the windows in muted layers of gold.
“You're leaving tomorrow morning?” Zenith asked quietly as he set a refilled cup of tea beside her.
“At dawn,” she wrapped her hands around the mug. “I’ve already packed, I’ll be with the forward crew heading into Tazavesh.”
He gave a small sound of acknowledgement, spoon moving slowly in his bowl. “You’re certain about this one?”
Reyindora took a deep breath, letting it go before speaking again. “As certain as I’ve been about anything since retirement. Anyways, they need my Light. Not everyone is returning for this one.”
Zenith looked at her for a long while, something unreadable flickering behind that eerie calm of his. “Then may the Light watch over you. And should it abandon you, remember that embracing the darkness can be equally as beneficial.”
She gave him a warm, genuine smile. He always had an interesting way with words ever since they were children. In that, she thought, he took after their grandmother.
“Now, your apartment?”
“You’ll check on it?”
“Yes, I’ll water your plants, though one looked ready to wither just from me opening the curtains.”
“They’re fine!” she argued, then softened. “But thank you.”
“Just know that it will be difficult for me to practice restraint."
She mock-scowled. “Zenith, if you replace my plants with desert succulents again…”
“It was one succulent, and it survived longer than the five ferns before it. Perhaps if you didn’t neglect them so much, I wouldn’t need to resort to such measures.”
The banter eased whatever tension lingered between them surrounding her next contract. They ate more slowly after that, and even slower over the small spiced black honey cakes he had made for dessert. As the meal ended, Reyindora leaned back with a contented sigh. “I think I’ll remember this stew the second things go sideways.”
“That was the goal, and a bribe. Come home and there will be more stew to be shared.”
She smiled and rose, resting a hand briefly on his shoulder. “You’re a good brother.”
One last look, then she gathered her cloak, promising to meet him at dawn for farewell. Zenith stood at the doorway until he couldn’t see her anymore. Then he turned back toward the table, letting the warmth of her presence linger in the air, just a little longer.

TMI Tuesday —
Zenith seems like a very secretive individual. Has he ever lived anything like a double or secret life?
Tumblr media
“No, I’ve never lived anything like that. I’m a private man, but not one for masks or false lives. With those I trust, I’ve always been an open book, even if it’s one written in delicate script and read by few."
“There’s a difference between secrecy and privacy. I keep my own counsel, but what’s mine isn’t hidden out of shame or deceit, it’s simply not meant for every passing ear.”
“Some stories are better told only to those who’ve earned a place in them.”
