ok as promised. let's analyse the fight between space beth and earth beth in hot rick.

this scene is devastating upon a first watch. and it's so hard to explain exactly why. but essentially i figured out why.

beth smith is a tragic character.

she's mentally suffering. she remembers her dad being supportive but she remembers him abandoning her. she remembers loving and hating him. she remembers her mother, or she knows she should.

and she knows she has a family. she has jerry. she has her kids. and she has her father back in her life.

beth has all these complicated emotions but above all, her connection to rick trumps everything. despite everything she's been through with space beth, she makes the decision: keep her family together.

this is how we stay a family

if her father tells her that this is how she stays in her family, then she listens.

her connection to her father is what grounds her. what her mind attaches to. it overpowers all. her care as a mother. her care as a wife. her care for herself. she literally destroys herself trying to fix her family. she kills space beth.

upon realising what she's done, she runs. because she realises something.

the family can be without her in it. and perhaps it could be better.

if she killed space beth to keep her family together, then she can remove herself from it too.

like her father, her ego is a disguise. she doesn't value herself. not above her family. she watches herself die and decides she's the problem, and runs.

beth is a tragic character, i feel. she tries so hard in everything. but she can't fix the hole she feels is within her from her trauma. her inherited alcoholism and mental illness combined with her abandonment issues can't be resolved by a father (our rick) who can't give her any closure. she's trying to mend a relationship with a man who was never in it.

she might have been brainwashed and manipulated to take these actions in hot rick but i feel it is indicative of something far clearer. this is truly how she views herself. as something that gets in the way of the ideal.
