The mental image of Pop Rocks next to a carton of cigarettes may bring me to tears on this Sunday afternoon. Oh, the dichotomy. The broken innocence. Tiny things that end spectacularly, colorful and loud and so present until they’re suddenly not.

I’m really gonna miss the innocence of 80s FancyFuck but I’m so excited they have the chance to meet again now :,)

I think one of the reasons I’m so torn up about Piña Coladas is how young everyone was when the story began. Like.... Stede and Mary were NINETEEN. MARRIED. WITH ALMA ON THE WAY.

I’M CURRENTLY NINETEEN. BEING LOCKED INTO A NUCLEAR LIFE LIKE THAT? WHAT A GENUINELY TERRIFYING THOUGHT.

The world and their families, who should have been guiding them, collectively said ‘oh, you think you’re grown? Let’s see about that.’ Stede even questions in his journal in 1987 whether or not it’s normal to marry your high school sweetheart, and all he wants to do is be a better person and father than his OWN father. I’m sure if we were privy to more of Mary’s thoughts that she’d be expressing the same amount of fear. They had literally nobody to turn to other than each other, and not in the ways they needed. They were saddled with a real-life game of house before they even knew who they were as people and there’s something so tragic about that.

I just need Ed and Stede to go to a diner at a ridiculous hour for pancakes and ice cream. Maybe they were playing truth or dare again and somehow this munchies run came of it.

Their waitress, ironically named Joyce (the name on that first fax misfire!!), ignores the fact that they’re holding hands under the table. Ed’s all giggly after one too many rum-and-hot-chocolates, so Stede places the order.

Stede plays with Ed’s hair while they wait, because that one curl just never sits right and he can’t not fix it. They have to cram their heads together to listen to their mixtapes on a beat-up Walkman, and the only thing that immortalizes the night is a single blurry Polaroid of Stede reaching over their plate of half-liquified sugar and behind the camera, presumably to give Ed a forkful.

AU where Piña Coladas Ed and Stede just get to be awkward, bumbling 20-somethings in love.
