It wasn’t uncommon for people to start their night of drinking during the afternoon, or even the morning.  Mel wasn’t the type to go out and get shitfaced drunk, but she enjoyed the occasional lunch time cocktail.  And only Toxic’s barman knew how to make an apple martini just the way she liked them.

Raine would be arriving any moment now, she was sure.  Mel had ordered a second drink as she waited, and absent-mindedly checked her text messages and social media apps in the meantime.  Her eyes lifted to the entrance of the bar every few minutes, twirling a fingertip around the rim of her glass.

The heat that hung in the air stuck to her skin and weighed down in her lungs. For once sandals decorated her feet instead of heels, sunglasses resting on her nose reflecting the sun and allowing her to see. Dark fingers moved to them, pushing them up as she entered the bar, hazel eyes darting over heads until the blonde’s face registered in her mind.

Taking her glasses off and folding the arms, she searched her bag for her glasses case and hid them inside, replacing the case in her handbag once more. Giving a small smile, she slipped into the seat in front of Mel, keeping her bag in her lap.
