Main Street Books in Old St. Charles Part 2

Turning back to your right to the front of the second floor, there’s a parlor with a fireplace and comfy chairs, and lots of tables with sparse book displays. A hodge podge of displays line the room devoted to various genres and subjects, including a bargain book shelf.

Selection here wasn’t wide, but it was a good selection nonetheless filled with books I had not seen before, and which were not the typical books you’d expect to find in a chain bookstore – such as in Crafting or Writer's Reference. Write my essay service will help you with this book.

I immediately approached a table devoted to one of my favorite hobbies – bird watching and identification, but I was holding out for the book I came for!

I enjoyed looking out onto the street from the second story windows. I should point out that pictures on their website indicate they’ve held book signings in this parlor before which probably explains why it’s not so crowded. The mix of displays can probably easily be moved to make room for customers. There was even a stack of plastic chairs in the corner by the window.

The parlor opens into a middle room which also serves as a kitchen, possibly for book club meetings or for what once was an upstairs apartment. In here you’ll find a nice selection of cookbooks, but the room was mostly devoted to more popular teen fiction, including quite a bit of focus on local author Heather Brewer who has signed here. Tee shirts featuring her book’s fanged smiley logo were also for sale here. The kitchen opens back into the hallway leading you back downstairs.

Almost everything in the store is new and also sold at full list price. The one bargain shelf upstairs did not boast a spectacular selection, unlike the rest of the store which is a nice mix of popular favorites, new releases, and titles I’d never seen or heard of before.

I grinned at one customer discussing Fifty Shades of Grey with the cashier in a heavy whisper, which he rushed back in to purchase after his wife and teen daughter had already stepped outside.

I grabbed the book I wanted off the New Release table and the cashier and I had a short conversation about the author. She even informed me the book was wonderful, which made me feel good about my purchase. Overall it was nice to hear “book” being spoken here, and this was one of the few times (in a long time) I’ve paid full price for a new hardcover book!  But I did my part and kept to my word thanks to the cashier speaking to me first!

Though quite true and humorous, a hand written note taped to one of the shelves made me laugh. It reads: “Customers stroll in. They browse real books with real pages. Then buy an ebook.”  At one point, the cashier was even having a conversation with a customer about “the curse of the Kindle” which I overheard.

Overall, it was a nice experience. I’d certainly visit this store again if I was in the area, or even make a special trip for a signing or book club that interested me. The store is even located next to an old printing press!
