Hayley McMahon in Dún Laoghaire. The main plan for this shoot was to get some practice with my lighting equipment, which went well - right up until it fell off the pier :’( So it’ll be a while before I can replace what I lost and do more like this...

Also shot a roll of 35mm film with Daisy, you can see some of those shots on my facebook page and I’ll upload more here during the week. Going to stick up a couple of shots from my other photoshoot last week now, though!

A shot I kept in colour and an alternate version of the first shot, because Daisy asked to see it in colour - looking at it now, maybe she’s right and I should have kept it that way! I like both versions though.

So after a long hiatus during which I finished my PhD thesis, I’m finally updating this blog again! Here’s a photo of Daisy Onubogu from a shoot we did together last week using two of my film cameras. This one was taken with an Agfa Isolette, a bellows-style medium format camera from the 50s. It’s my favourite one from the shoot, I think, though I’m pretty happy with a lot of them!

I went for broke on this one. Two off-camera flashes (not that you can tell anymore!), two runs through Analog Efex Pro’s double-exposure feature (with an old photo of some flowers), black and white adjustments in Lightroom. I had fun with this one!

Just lightroom adjustments on this one (I think). Same off-camera flash and umbrella setup, same patient girlfriend.

Been experimenting with some new photography equipment, and with Google’s Nik editing plugins that they’ve just made available for free. Used off-camera flash through a diffusing umbrella to take this, then Dfine, Sharpener Pro and Silver Efex pro to edit this. I like the results, but going to need a lot more practice to get the most out of the plugins, I think!

A good few months ago now the Dublin Alt Models facebook page organised a group shoot, and I went along. I meant to keep up a steady pace uploading the photos, and I got some really good ones up, but I was saving this for later and then of course I got out of the habit. This shot of Diane Duffy is my favourite from the entire shoot, and I’m still really happy with it months later. It hasn’t quite not seen the light of day - I sent copies of the shots to Diane and I think she uploaded it - but I really should have got it up on my own pages sooner!

Big thanks to Diane for being a great model, and to Paul Brady for lending me some lighting equipment and Andrea Guetti for some really helpful tips on using it.

This is one of the photos where I owe a lot to two other photographers at the shoot who were very generous with their equipment and time: Paul Brady let me use one of his flashes with a softbox and triggers. I knew the basics of what I was doing with them, but Andrea Guetti gave me lots of advice that helped me get much better pictures. Sara is also an amazing model, so I’m really grateful to all of them!

About a week and a half ago the Dublin Alt Models facebook group organised a group photoshoot in a local metal bar, and I went along. It was a great experience, and thanks to some generous advice and loans of equipment from other photographers (not to mention the models, of course!), I got to try out some new things and came home with some photos I really like. Here's a shot of Diane Duffy that I really like. Gonna queue up more to post during the week now.
