The moonlight is shining over Awa’atlu and the whole clan is gathered on the beach for the annual festival where the singers and dancers of the clan perform multiple songs and acts. Everyone is watching the dancers in awe while Tsireya is getting bored and restless. She’s been attending these events since she was young and over the years she’s grown tired of them. “y/n, can we go? I’m ready to leave.” She whines in your ear, wanting to go home and cuddle in your shared marui until you both drift off to sleep.

“No, ‘reya, just relax. Ur ocs look really cool, I hope this is okay to ask but what's your oc world like??

tumblr is being VERY fussy about letting me post this 💔 anyways It's totally okay to ask I love talking about my OC setting ^.^ Also this setting has a lot of religious theming to it just so you know!

The (temporary) name for the setting is Ys! You can think of this world as existing in a Pangaea-like state.

This land has a few different major nations (ordering these from Northernmost to Southernmost):

- Lapta: a frigid, snow-covered nation that is considered mysterious to the rest of the world. Outsiders rarely travel here due to the treacherous conditions, but some nomadic peoples as well as merchants sometimes travel southwards. These people are usually the prominent source of information of news from. Lapta is notable in that many ancient gods continue to be worshipped here! Their major goddess is Zarihan, the goddess of healing and god. Supposedly Zarihan crashed to the Earth like a meteorite some many years ago, forming a sacred lake in the region. Zari is mentioned in some other religions but doesn't take nearly as big of a role! Festivals worshipping her often involving donning heavy golden masks. My OC Azusa is from here, and he wears a mask characteristic of the region!

- Chione is just south of Lapta. It's much smaller and not nearly as cold! It's one of the few places in the world where monarchy is still a big thing, though it has little political influence overall. A common export from Chion is a purple dye created from flowers called Ianthe flowers, which are notoriously hard to grow. My OC Parinyan is a dye creator!

- Beneath Chione is Emathia. Emathia is the largest nation. It was the home of both Amadsis, a famed hero-king, and of Solomon, an infamous king who plunged the world into a horrible war some hundreds of years ago. The weather here is cold, but not nearly as frigid as Lapta or Chion. One of Emathia's famous features is it's massive library, which contains some truly ancient books! It is also where the world's airship industry got it's start.

Emathia's central deities are Makaea, the goddess of the moon (and protector of lost travelers), and Mirnath, god of the sun (he used to be a god of war, but nowadays is associated more with fortune and magic). Makaea is the wife to the Hero-king Amasis as well :~)

Strangely enough, no one's been able to find Solomon's ancient castle... not even a relic!

- Next is Paros, the central continent. A major city here is called Psamthe, which is actually where the story starts! Paros is kind of a mass of different peoples and cultures. People who are traqveling to sell their wares tend to set up shop here, and some of course end up deciding to live in Paros... one famous shop here is a jewelry store owned by a weird but loving family.

Paros' major deity is Lajavard, the god of the skies, though Paros employs more of a pantheistic system and borrows gods and religious aspects from many different lands. It's part of what makes Paros feel so friendly and welcoming!

- There's a small area between Paros and Illyria, the southernmost land, called Thracia... Thracia is home to the town of Elaia, which exports a spice called Black Sand. It's very famous! The story of how Elaia was established is a famous one too; the patron deity, whose name is Also Elaia, is sometimes called the Goddess of Bawdy Comedy. A cute custom here is that during weddings, the bride is tasked with making her groom laugh! after all, what better show of love than perfectly knowing your partners sense of humour? (gay weddings can skip this but they usually don't. it's a very fun part of the ceremony!)

- And lastly is Illyria! This one is the most developed in world building terms because it's where the first arc of the story takes place 😭 Illyria is notable for changing massively over the years, and this change was spearheaded by iride, it's first recorded queen. She was a strategic genius who managed to ward off Solomon's forces during the war, and later befriended Makeda, Solomon's wife (Makeda beheaded him and later became king of Emathia herself, but that's another story).

While the old castle of Illyria is no longer in use, it stands tall a symbol of Iride's strength. The capital here is a city called Illion, which is where Iride's descendants now live. Though this was once a monarchy, the more recently constructed castle serves more as a community center than a place to show royal power. Another city is Rizinia, which is a major trading hub!

The major deity of Illyria is Ys, goddess of the earth, protector of children, lady of the harvest. She is the husband of Lajavard and the lover of Zarihan. She was a goddess first worshipped by Iride and her people, so her conception is more recent! And yet she's massively important all the same.

An important story in both Illyria and Lapta's religion is that of Ys' death and revival. She was killed by a plot laid by her jealous sister Kuja (goddess of the seas, death, and the afterlife), which brought a great deluge upon the world as Lajavard grieved her. Zarihan is then sent down to Earth by her parent to provide aid, and crashes into the Earth, forming a hole through the clouds of deluge and allowing the sun to shine down...! She travels to the very depths of the sea where Ys' body is being held, and revives her with an ancient magic only known to Zari and her children.

Zari fades into obscurity after her role in this story in every land except for Lapta like I mentioned....

1.  most  days,  armin  takes  his  coffee  for  here.  he  circles  his  fingers  against  the  rim  of  a  ceramic  cup  &  drinks  black  coffee  only  splashed  with  cream;  he  pretends  that  he  doesn’t  spend  what  he  does  on  coffee  shop  receipts,  &  he  pretends  that  he  isn’t  playing  patron  to  a  coffeeshop  that’s  still  trying  to  find  his  feet.  the  barista,  eren  (  he  introduces  himself  as  eren  ),  slides  a  paper  cup  of  coffee  towards  him  across  the  counter;  he  explains  that  the  dishwasher  is  being  fixed,  so  they’re  all  paper  today.  there’s  a  number  written  with  bleeding  ink  scribbled  against  the  cup,  &  the  threes  look  like  eights.

armin  answers  five  emails  at  his  usual  table  before  he  gets  impulsive  &  drafts  message  one  :  hey!!

he  deletes  one  exclamation  mark  &  almost  sends.  he  doesn’t.

the  number  reads  unknown  at  the  top  of  his  phone,  &  the  message  is  vapid  anyway.  it  goes  unsent.

2-3.  three  more  messages  go  unsent.  things  that  he  starts  to  draft  when  eren  writes  his  number  again  against  the  paper  of  a  cup  or  a  napkin,  when  eren  tries  to  make  his  threes  look  more  like  threes.

message  two  (  too  polite  )  :  thanks  for  your  number!  this  message  he  writes  at  his  regular  table,  when  he’s  feeling  a  little  curious.  when  he  feels  that  he  keeps  accidentally  sharing  glances  with  eren  &  exchanging  flat  non-smiles  after  armin  overhears  a  customer  that’s  a  little  too  loud  &  a  little  too  detailed  &  a  little  too  fickle.  a  part  of  him  really  thinks  that  eren  start  an  argument  with  the  customer.

message  three  (  too  crass  )  :  heyy.  this  message  he  writes  when  he  thinks  no  one’s  looking.  jean  has  a  fondness  for  local  film  festivals  that  armin  never  really  learns  how  to  love;  he’s  about  to  turn  off  his  phone  after  an  impulsive  greeting.  jean  corrects  him  :  when  you’re  flirting,  it’s  better  to  send  two  ys  rather  than  one.

the  more  armin  stares  at  it,  the  more  certain  he  is  :  he  is  a  one  y  kind  of  person.  message  four  (  too  accusatory  )  :  i  didn’t  know  you  charged  a  flat  fee  for  refills.  that  one  had  been  an  accident.  armin  eavesdrop  again  &  sends  an  email  &  overhears  eren  give  this  information  to  a  woman  in  dark-rimmed  glasses.  she  nods  her  agreement  &  parks  herself  at  a  table  to  the  right  of  armin.  his  refills  come  without  charge.

5.  the  fifth  message  arrives  &  makes  eren’s ( @chaoslulled  ) phone  vibrate  in  his  pocket.

in  places  like  this,  in  new  cafes  :  the  clientele  is  limited.  there  had  man  who  works  two  doors  down,  who  had  been  curious  about  the  location,  who  said  all  the  wrong  things.  armin  hums  to  indicate  he’s  not  listening.  he  dips  between  guilt  &  triumph  when  he  leaves  two  unsubstantiated  one-star  google  reviews  to  the  man’s  place  of  work.  but  then  he’s  interrupted  by  the  press  of  dry  lips  (  too  confident,  too  bizarre  )  against  his  cheek.  even  if  the  gesture  is  helpful,  it’s  scattering.  even  if  the  gesture  is  a  good  pretense,  it  feels  a  bit  exorbitant.

still,  his  cheeks  warm.  he’s  exchanged  enough  small  talk  &  pleasant  details  this  feels  like  a  shared  heist  (  albeit  a  poorly  planned  one  ).  armin  hides  the  twists  of  a  smile  behind  his  palm  &  finally  sends  message  five  (  a  little  bemused  &  sprawling;  a  confession  that  the  number  had  been  saved  )  :  you  go  all  out,  huh  ?

he  supposes  that  maybe  :  they  put  on  a  convincing  show.  this  is  a  little  unbalanced  so  far.

Harriet Campesinos!' favourite records of the decade

Hello all, and Happy New Year. Apologies for being the straggler here, but if anyone still cares, here are my favourite albums of the decade. I’ve put them in the rough order in which I discovered them, so that its an accurate chart of my rambling, non-sensical musical journey from the Mercury Prize to Pitchfork and beyond (hopefully).

PJ Harvey: Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea My Mum used to buy me the Mercury Music Prize CD every year, and in 2001, as far as I was concerned it was the last word in music and PJ Harvey was the last word in sophistication. On the album, she seemed to be living out my ultimate teenage fantasy lifestyle, especially in the video for Good Fortune where she’s walking the streets of New York at night. I think she welcomed me to the cult of the pop star, which I’m still quite prone to. See below…

Andre 3000: The Love Below When I finally moved beyond having Hey Ya! on repeat, Andre 3000 was there in all his splendour with more variations of style and soul than I was ready for.

The Arcade Fire: Funeral A list like this seems like a good place to celebrate collective passions as well as personal ones, and Funeral is the ultimate example of this for me. Ollie summed it up in his list.

Joanna Newsom: Ys Her favourite drink is raspberry beer because it tastes like a unicorn’s tears. Aleks has already put it more succinctly than I could’ve: its so complete and immersive.

Low: The Great Destroyer I cannot emphasize how much joining LC! has expanded my horizons, musically and otherwise. I knew Tom and Aleks liked Low, and the first time I heard them was when Tom put on ‘When I Go Deaf’ during an unexpectedly long mid-night, Mid-Wales drive. It took my breath away , and I can’t think of a better way to be introduced to Low.

Nico: The Frozen Borderline – 1968-1970 I don’t know if this is allowed…Not technically recorded between the years 2000 and 2009, but surely its a testament to the decade that it chose to reissue two of Nico’s less well-known albums, The Marble Index and Desertshore in such a complete and illuminating package?! The demos that are included are so moving, the sound of uninhibited self-expression.

Deerhoof: Reveille For many, including me, to know them is to love them. I chose this album, out of the ones that I know, for its strange and appealing mix of familiarity and weirdness. They are so unique, but at the same time seem to contain the past fifty years of musical experimentation within them. They are another band pinnacle I think, and now I will stop this vain attempt to pin them down as being anything.

Animal Collective: Feels It would be fair to say that I am a bit of a die-hard romantic, and so I had to pick Animal Collective’s most delicate record of the ones that I’ve heard. I really love their lyrics on this album and I love the thought of people writing whole series’ of songs to celebrate when they fall in love. Sorry about this readers, but I’m letting myself go because its the Christmas holidays. (I wrote this a few weeks ago and now I can’t even use the season as an excuse)

Battles: Mirrored Typically, I was a latecomer to Battles. Unfortunately somehow I got them confused with the band Battle when I first read about them, and I just really couldn’t work out why people kept going on about them! Luckily I realised my grave mistake just in time to get very excited at the prospect of playing on the same day as them at Melt! Festival in Germany. We watched from the side of the stage, which is good in some ways, but can completely destroy any illusion that the band you love so much is talented or charismatic. Of course Battles sounded perfect and were completely riveting. Melt Festival! was also a very aesthetically appropriate place to watch them play, as the site is surrounded by huge disused pieces of machinery looming over a very modern concrete amphitheatre. They seem to me to be the pinnacle of what a band can be, but no doubt their next album will redefine it all over again.

Camille: Le Fil She’s a ‘world music’ artist apparently, according to HMV. This album is also terribly avant garde because all the songs grow out of a continuously hummed drone note. What she actually is is a French singer who brings the tradition of the Parisian music hall into precisely the first decade of this century. Sadly I can’t speak French but Camille’s voice is just so emotionally direct that she seems to have all human emotions covered as well as some that are just her own.

Chrome Hoof: Pre-Emptive False Rapture My friends from Islet introduced me to this. Its such an exciting album from start to finish and I’m so happy that this band exists today. They’re such massive show-offs and clearly have a few too many ideas up their long glittery druid sleeves. The sound that somebody makes in ‘Moss Covered Obelisk’ at 6:21 is certainly my best noise of the decade.

Micachu: Jewellery I think Micachu is a special artist. This album manages to be simple and complex at the same time. Its so rhythmic and perfect to dance to and also, every moment is filled with ideas. When I listen to this album I get a sense of somebody who absolutely needs to make music, and would’ve created something amazing in whatever time, place or culture she found herself in.
