there’s just something so therapeutic about getting ready with your best friends and just being girls together, sharing perfume, asking what shade of lipstick someone’s wearing, gossiping while curling your hair and taking photos after you’re all done, asking if your outfit is cute and which photos to post on insta

The United States has always been a terrible place to be sick and disabled. Ableism is baked into our myths of bootstrapping and self-reliance, in which health is virtue and illness is degeneracy. It is long past time for a bedrock shift, for all of us.
Long covid has derailed my life. Make no mistake: It could yours, too.

But seriously….when Ken said “They’re staring at me and there’s no violent undertones” while smiling and Barbie says “They’re staring at me too and there’s definitely violent undertones” while worried were the realest moments in that movie.

The Barbie movie reminded me about how when I was little my parents were upset that I kept making my Barbie dolls kiss, so they bought me a Ken doll. The next day they found me having a funeral for poor Ken in the garden, he had died of tuberculosis. All the Barbies were in attendance and I buried him under our rose bush. The Barbies were too poor to afford a headstone (it was 1875) so I didn’t mark where the grave was and I never could find him again. He’s probably still there.

I can't be your friend
can't be your lover
Can't be the reason we hold back each other from falling in love
With somebody other than me
