“I mean, there's no library back home,” Marinette admitted, running her free hand along the nearest bookshelf. There wasn't any dust there. “Books are too expensive for someone like me.”

Adrien was horrified. “You don't have books?”

She wasn't offended. “I didn't say that.”

“You said...” His gaze flickered between her and the shelves.

“I have a few,” she said, touching the spine of a book. It wasn't bent out of place. “It's a common present for big birthdays, you know? Merchants come with old books that won't sell anywhere else—the ones missing important pages or the second half gone. My mother liked to make up the endings for me.”

“I'm sorry,” he blurted.

Marinette tilted her head.

“I'm... I am not trying to upset you,” Adrien cautiously said, standing so close that they were almost touching chests. “Chloé tells me that I can be... rude.”

She let out a fond breath. “You're not rude.”

He winced. “Is there a large time difference between us?”

She blinked.

“It's nighttime here,” he explained, readily gesturing to windows that were larger and more spotless than any others she'd seen in her life. “We tried to pick a good time when we would not disturb you.”

Marinette stared at him wordlessly.

If anything, he seemed happier with her lack of response. “I'm Adrien.”

“...Hi?” she replied warily.

“And you?” Adrien questioned, looking at her expectantly.

“Confused,” she stated.

At first, his expression turned into one of disbelief before he quickly schooled it back into a happy one. “It is lovely to meet you, Confused! That is not a very common name over here, so I will not forget it any time soon.”

“Oh, my god,” he murmured, doing as she said. His touch was barely there, so hesitant and light that she could hardly feel him. Her shirt rode up to show part of her stomach, so his hands made contact with her bare skin. “I—”

She leaned in so their noses were touching. “Shut up.”

He was still wide-eyed.

She tugged his hair a little.

Adrien let out a moan.

“What the fuck,” she said.

“What do you want from me?” he replied, visibly flustered. “You're hot and you're—you're in my face!”

“If you get a boner—”

“Maybe don't pull my hair!” he exclaimed.

Marinette glared at him.

“Don't look at me,” he all but begged. “I'm touching you and you're so close. I'm losing my fucking mind already.”

“You are pathetic,” she told him.

Adrien squirmed beneath her. “Stop talking dirty to me.”

“I'm insulting you.”

“Jokes on you, I'm into that,” he replied without skipping a beat. “Isn't your plan not to turn me on? You're doing a terrible job.”

“It's not that bad,” she replied, bringing the whole tray back over with her. There was room on the desk for it. “Chloé does so much worse. It's just a few comments and maybe a slap or two, you know?”

He was gawking at her.

Marinette squinted. “Maybe you don't know.”

“How—how could they do that to you?” he stammered, looking her over critically. “Are you hurt right now? I have a first-aid kit somewhere.”

“I'm fine,” she assured him.

“You just told me you're abused.”

“Adrien, I'm not chained up and left to starve in the basement,” she replied, passing a cookie over for him to eat. He accepted it but didn't go to take a bite. “I barely see them. They're always busy at work, so it's, like, us bumping into each other a few times a week.”

“That's awful!”

“Is it?” she questioned. “It's life.”

He looked at her softly. “Of course. I'll make sure it's the best way possible.”

“Thank you so much,” she said.

He patted her head.
