the problem isn’t that someone who has learned from experience or research isn’t involved - it’s that they are ignored, told they are raising an issue that won’t be of concern, or have no voice in the process. been there, done that, watched the resultant crash and burn multiple times.

I think the real problem here is that big media corporations seem to believe that social media userbases are fungible, and persist in acting on this belief no matter how many times it’s demonstrated to be wrong.

There’s a specific pattern of events that plays out over and over (and over) again, and it looks something like this:

1. Social media platform becomes popular

2. Social media platform is purchased by big media corporation in order to gain access to it large user base

3. Big media corporation realises that social media platform’s demographics are not the demographics they want to sell things to.

4. Big media corporation institutes measures to drive away “undesirable” users, apparently in the honest belief that the outgoing users will automatically be replaced by an equal number of new, more demographically desirable users

5. This does not, in fact, occur

6. Social media platform crashes and burns

You’d think that, by the sheer law of averages, at least one person who’s capable of learning from experience would become involved in this whole process at some point.

so i was looking through tumblr to see if i had posted some art pics earlier last year and i came across this post of mine. it’s marked sensitive. what??? how are miniature tea sets sensitive??? who in the world decided that posted needed to be marked as such???

*looks around at the horde* never feel bad about how many dolls you have if you love them. don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to only a few dolls because your friends say that they are fine with only a few.

some advice: it may take time and patience when you don’t have a lot of money. it may make you feel bad when you fall in love with that limited or discontinued doll. (i’ve found that you can find things that you never expected to find just by paying attention; you can have the money by putting a little aside when you have extra.) it doesn’t have to mean turning over your existing collection to get a new doll - either because you need the money to get it, or because you’ve limited the number of dolls in your collection. limiting yourself to some arbitrary number can leave some people feeling just as bad as those people who feel bad for having a lot of dolls. there are people that won’t get why that is, and that’s okay. your collection is yours. it isn’t someone else’s and it isn’t up to someone else to dictate what is right or wrong in how many dolls you collect. you know your limits, you will find them. plus you can always refine your collection regardless of size.

some fun info: i’ve been in this hobby for over 10 years now. i have A LOT of dolls and live in a small studio apartment. there was one point my dolls were termed “the mountain” because of how they were set up from floor to top of dresser. not all of my dolls are always out, some remain put away until i have time to work on them. i believe that sometimes it’s the right time to get a doll, even if they won’t be finished for years - and, yes, i have dolls that have yet to be finished nearly 10 years after getting them. i go through times where i look at my dolls and think about how i haven’t played with them and could sell them, but then i also feel that the dolls are art and can be treated like sculpture - they don’t HAVE to be played with. i can do whatever i want with them. they are not sentient creatures that i have an obligation to.

shout out to the collectors who own large amounts of dolls and are not afraid to post group shots, it makes me feel more confident about my alarmingly quickly growing collection of dolls;;;

it feels like every day brings some fresh new thing that erodes our rights, impacts our environment, denies reality and truth, or furthers the divide between sanity and utter stupidity. i know i can't talk sense into some people, but i wish it were that easy to make them realize that the current regime is not helping them. they are not helping our planet. they are hastening the demise of our country. they are lining the pockets of themselves, their family, and their friends - people who are the haves. people we have been trained to look up to since we were young. people whose silver spoons aren't in their mouths so much as up their asses. if you support these people and their actions, you have zero right to complain when you realize that you've lost what you had at the hands of those you thought were working for you.
