We're back at #Budapest Buda #castle, and there's an important protip for any budding travel writers out there.  **Take pictures of any / all signage, text, or information connected with a thing**  There's no text on the statue itself, of course, and signage is sometimes at a premium. The words 'Hadik Andras' are carved in the stone platform, however, which gives me just enough information to research.   Installed in 1937, Andras Hadik was a captain, a governor, a nobleman, and called the 'hussar of all hussars' after a military victory over Berlin during the Seven Years Way (1756-1763). Some more street art seen during a #chill #streetart tour of #budapest. The real tragedy here is that this art may not be visible for very long — the sides of these building face an open lot, and as soon as construction starts, these get hidden away. While in #Budapest, we took a pretty sweet tour of the city's street art and some of the back streets. A shoutout to Budapest Flow and their 'chill' tour, which runs on Sundays and is a chance to see the city when fewer tourists are out (not saying they're still recovering from hangovers or whatever, but there are definitely fewer of them around these areas on a Sunday).   For those that wondered, Rubik's Cube was invented by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor. One element of #Budapest that's hard to escape is just how touristy some parts of the city have become. It's only a small part, to be sure, but the touristy parts are *very* touristy. I offer this restaurant, seen along a major walkway in the touristy part as an example. When you have a city bisected by a river, you'd better believe the bridges connecting them make the city come together. This is one of the lions on the #Budapest Szechenyi Chain bridge, the first permanent bridge connecting from Buda to Pest. When it was inaugurated in 1849, it was also the second-longest suspension bridge in the world. Blown up during WW2 and rebuilt in 1949, it's one of the iconic sights of the city.  Oh, and that myth about the lions not having tongues? LOL. The former Roman military base and settlement of #Aquincum is a great half-day trip from #Budapest and pretty easy to reach via public transportation. The open-air #museum originally opened in 1894, and today, it aims to show off what remains from as early as the 1st century AD. A look at the facade of Matthias Church, one of the standout attractions of #Budapest along the river. Once used as the coronation church to install Hungarian kings, today it's a Catholic church with more than a few twists. Like most churches in touristy areas / cities, you'll need to pay to enter - about $5 US in this case. Strolling through #Budapest Buda #Castle - One of the most well-known recognizable sights of Budapest originally dates from the mid-13th century. The entire history of this structure is filled with plenty of stories of conquests, sieges, being destroyed and rebuilt, and so on. It's been used as defense, a university, a residence, and a weapons store over the centuries, as you'd expect from a castle. Welcome to the International Festival of Masquerade Games held in #Pernik, #Bulgaria.
