3 Steps to Boost your Confidence as a Minority Entrepreneur
As a minority entrepreneur I have struggled in the area of confidently believing I have what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur for a few reasons I have listed below.
) Not many minority examples on a business level of success such as a Warren Buffett, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
Lack of coding experience.
Comfortable with staying in my comfort zone.
There are more reasons for me personally but hopefully you get my point. As a minority entrepreneur I’m usually the only minority in the room or on rare occasions there is two or three in a big group setting. In my experiences I have noticed at times, especially in-group settings I either don’t get eye contact or am the last person in the group to be acknowledged. So to me in order to be seen or looked at as a valuable contributor to the environment I have to speak and speak their lingo in order to feel comfortable which at times has had me question myself… Am I the issue?
Step 1: Find a Practice
As a kid I grew up with low self-esteem and kept to myself throughout high-school, especially during my time when I had gained a lot of weight. Since then my experiences in the military, teaching entrepreneurship at the Small Business Development Center in Cleveland and learning photography have all helped me gain confidence. The process of transformation was gradual and did not happen all over night, but each practice I experienced from these activities have had a lasting effect thus enabling me to focus on my strengths and identify my weaknesses and begin to challenge myself to get better in those areas.
Step 2: Mental Preparation
For me my second step was mental. I had to mentally be willing to acknowledge there was an issue and then have a desire to want to change it. What helped me to want more for myself was the stories of business men and women I began to research such as Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Mark Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Tristan Walker, Angela Benton and Anthony Frasier to name a few. Once I made up my mind to address my lack of confidence, the next step for me was to put some action behind it. The more action I took the more out of my comfort zone I felt which unknowingly to me showed people around me my confidence levels were on the up but more importantly! I noticed it in myself.
Step 3: Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Along my journey I have learned you must be comfortable in your own skin and be willing to challenge yourself to get and stay out of your comfort zone. So whatever people say to your face or behind your back will not sabotage your mindset but motivate it! I view competition as a very important motivator but now only view one person as my competition. Me! I want to become the best I can be both personally as a man of God and professionally as an entrepreneur and it all starts with me.
At the end of the day anyone can try to motivate and push you but to truly transform (meet and overcome that change) I believe you must be mentally ready and willing to make a change first. You know how the saying goes... “Knowledge is power” but according to the book “Think and Grow Rich” knowledge truly becomes powerful when you put that knowledge to action.
