“to be a witch” falsehoods

there are a lot of misconceptions going around lately on what someone needs to be a witch, i just want to clear some up. 

you do not need:

fancy tools - or any tools at all, really. all you need is yourself and your intent. sure, tools that fit your aesthetic are nice, but you don’t need them. if you have the ability to buy and you want to, there’s no stopping you, but please don’t feel like you have to go out and buy yourself an etsy broom or a cauldron. and don’t stress yourself out over making one either! they are but trappings.

appearance - in witchy aesthetic photos, it’s usually a slim, white girl with long hair. and that lack of a more diverse representation can give the impression that you need to look and be a certain way, but please know it is untrue. it does not matter what your race, weight, hair, or anything looks like. 

aesthetic - you don’t need to dress “like a witch”. a witch can look like anything. if you want to indulge in the black cat, black clothes look, fine, but you don’t need to confine yourself to it if it’s not your thing, you can look like whatever you want to. 

gender - there are some in the community that will fight tooth and nail to make it seem you have to be a cis female to call yourself a witch. don’t listen to those terfs. anyone can be a witch, regardless of gender. male, non-binary, agender, trans, demi, etc. 

black cat - you don’t need a black cat. you don’t need to have a familiar either. those are unique relations that should not be forced to happen

dark, mystical attitude - you don’t need to suddenly start talking like chaucer or put effort into having an air of mystery. you don’t need to be holier than thou, or act like you know it all. witchcraft is a journey that takes time to learn. 

cursing - no, you don’t need to curse. but you don’t need to shame someone for cursing either.

on a spiritual path - witchcraft does not have to be spiritual! you can practice magic without having to worry about being “spiritual enough”, because each craft is unique and deeply personal, you don’t need to force it to be something that you’re not invested in.

religious -  there are many witches that wonder where the power comes from if they don’t call upon a god. the power can come from you. you do not need to devote yourself to a god 

wiccan - wicca is not the only way to do witchcraft, it is only one way of practicing magic. there are many people who think the only way to do witchcraft is to be wiccan, but they are misinformed. if you do not want to work with wiccan influences or traditions, you do not have to. 

initiated - some practices, some traditions, initiation is needed. however, to be a witch in general, you don’t need to go through any ritual to prove yourself one. be wary of those who insist you do, they are often trying to take advantage of new witches. 

straight/cis - some traditions you’ll encounter have homophobic roots/influences. while it is discouraging, you dont have to listen to those, or you can work with others to rework phobic traditions

a “natural” witch -  some people will claim to have “witch’s blood” or “the flame”, meaning witchcraft has been in their families for generations. this does not make them superior or more of a witch than you. anyone who wants to be a witch can, no matter their birth circumstances. 

labelled - a lot of witches label their craft, “herb witch”, “space witch”, “storm witch” etc. you can be as many as you want, or none if it pleases you. you do not need to label your craft however. some people can’t put their craft in a box.

Winter sore throat “tea”- In a jar combine lemon slices, organic honey and sliced ginger. Close jar and put it in the fridge, it will form into a “jelly”. To serve- spoon jelly into mug and pour boiling water over it. Store in fridge 2-3 months.

Tips for baby witches, lazy witches, tired witches, or any witch really:

Enchant your morning cup of tea/coffee

Match the colours of your makeup to your intentions for the day

Visualise the water washing away all the negativity when you shower

Enchant your nail polish (bonus: match the colour to the intention, black for protection, red for love, green for prosperity, etc)

Say your affirmations (for clear skin, fading scars, reducing dullness, etc) when doing your skincare

Charge your perfume with the energy you wish to attract

When tying your shoes, visualise them symbolically protecting you from tripping and “falling” into places and situations that disturb your peace

Use music to your advantage, listen to songs that match your intentions, or alternatively, use music as a tool for divination

Some witches veil to keep their energy from draining and to protect them from others’ emotions, but a beanie works too

If you wear glasses, use them as a tool so that they help you “see clearly”

Put your moisturiser on in the shape of a sigil before massaging it in

Child’s pose is always there for you, use it when you need it (alleviates stress and anxiety, helps clear the mind, releases tension in the back, helps to steady breathing, is overall great for grounding, etc)

Visualise the A+ (on your report card/on the paper after it’s been graded/etc) right before beginning to solve your test/exam, it also helps if you can draw a sigil somewhere on the paper, or trace it on the paper with your finger

When shaving, visualise any energy buildup being shaved off as well

If you play the guitar, draw a sigil on your plectrum/pick for an added boost (this works with other instruments too)

Do not litter out of respect for nature and its spirits

When you’re just starting out, or even when you’re just too drained to practice your craft like you used to, it can feel like there isn’t enough magic in your life. This is your daily reminder that a lot of the time, the only difference between routine and magick is intent.

Animist Wishing Well Shrine

Create your own magical wishing well by creating a natural landscape with a water feature. Here I have a simple ceramic bowl filled with a little water, surrounded by living succulents. Craft it to be pleasing to the senses so that any Nature spirit would love to dwell there. 

Your wishing well can be very simple, perhaps nothing more than a small bowl of water and a few acorns or stones you found in the park. Or it can be more elaborate and decorated.

Call your friends, allies, and beings of power who have agreed to work with you to dwell in the wishing well shrine. Or, make a deal with a new spirit to dwell in your wishing well altar and grant your wishes.

The coins you add to the fountain are payment to the spirit world for your wishes to be granted.

To make a wish, add a coin to the water and say your wish. Use the terminology and symbolism your spirit allies expect. Perhaps the more the coin is worth, the more work they will do for you.

You can also add other gifts such as jewelry (note the red bracelet above).

If you like making decorative scenes like me, why not a wishing well marker with tally marks for every wish that comes true.

When the fountain water needs to be changed or when the bowl becomes too full, move the gifts to a permanent jar. These things no longer belong to you; you hold on to them for the spirit world.

Remember not to be greedy. Spirits can only work so hard and so fast. Moderate your wishes depending on what your spirit allie(s) can accomplish.

Just witch things

- you always grab random rocks and call them "friend" when outside

- you have literally millions of empty jars everywhere that you keep meaning to use but they just. sit. there. Mocking you. One has rain water in it and the other is brown. You forgot what's in it. You're scared to touch it.

- threw random shit together into a mud puddle or a sink when you were young and called it a "potion"

- there are crystals in your pillow case that poke your eyes out but you keep them there for "witching" even tho you've long since forgotten why tf they're there

- you have a hundred notebooks all with three pages filled out with some stuff because they "fit certain aesthetics" of your craft but you eventually forgot and/or found a better one and they keep piling up and you feel ashamed when you look in your closet because you have to stack them out of sight because you can't handle the responsibility any longer

- candles

- plants fucking everywhere.

- "just one more deck" you say, ignoring the other 10 decks you bought just last week even though you already had 10 more you bought before that

- waving a bundle of herbs around the house when you feel off and shouting "Get the fuck out of here you don't even pay rent, you're no good duck you're just like your father"

For the annon who asked for types of tea to drink in witchcraft.

There are lots of amazing herbs to use for tea that have so many benefits physically and spiritually but please please please be careful. Do more research and remember not all herbs are food grade

I will only be talking about teas that I am familiar with. They are quite common and you shouldn’t have difficulty finding them. I have made my own tea out of herbs I’ve grown but that’s a post for another day.

Green Tea

Green tea has been used medicinally for centuries. It is known to prevent cancer, reduce risk of stroke, reduce ldl cholesterol (the bad one), boost metabolism and is used for weight loss, improve brain function and prevent Alzheimer’s, prevents heart disease, good for your teeth and kills bacteria, and its proven to help you live longer. Its magical properties are equally abundant. Green tea is used for all kinds of healing magic, used for longevity, brings wealth and can be used in money spells, great for love spells and improves sexual performance, boosts energy, banishes negativity so its great for cleansings.

Black Tea

Black tea is something to turn to when you need a pick me up. Its the most caffeinated of the teas I’m mentioning, not as much a coffee but still a decent amount. It’s full of antioxidants, prevents cancer, reduces risk of stroke, improves gut health, boosts heart health, can reduce blood sugar levels and blood pressure, helps to regulate diabetes, improves focus. It can be used in witchcraft for so many different things. Drink it for courage, banishes boredom, brings wealth and can be used in money spells, stimulates the mind, and its just a great tea to drink if you’re feeling a but down and need a little boost.

Chamomile Tea

A lovely tea to drink for a good night’s sleep and sweet dreams but it also has so much more to offer. Chamomile harnesses the energy of the sun which helps promote healing and banishes negativity. It relieves stress and anxiety, helps an upset stomach, and is truly one of the best cures for a hard time sleeping or bad dreams. On nights when you feel anxious, need to protect yourself from some type of darkness looming, or just need a little self care and relaxation Chamomile is the way to go.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint is such a great thing. I’ve been drinking peppermint tea medicinally since I was little. It’s great for stomach aces, soothing headaches, great to drink when you’re feeling a bit anxious, and lovely for sore throats (when my throat is sore I can’t eat almost an entire tin of Altoids, mint really helps). It’s abundant in spiritual benefits too. It brings good luck, banishes negativity while promoting positive thinking, it is said to repel vampires, it’s great for bringing inspiration and clearing the mind, and promotes overall physical and spiritual healing. Definitely one to keep in the pantry!

Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea is a beautiful, tart floral tea that tastes similar to cranberry juice, but its lovely all year. Its full of antioxidants, prevents cancer, improves liver health, fights bacteria, and its a natural diuretic. Hibiscus attracts love, lust, passion, and divination. Great to drink for a love spell, used to cause prophetic dreams, and it can be used in wedding ceremonies.

Ginger Tea

A hot cup of ginger tea might just be the best thing on a cold winter night. Ginger tea is wonderful for relieving nausea, great for gut health, fights respiratory issues, reduces inflammation, strengthens immune system, relieves period cramps, reduces stress, and its packed with vitamin C and magnesium. Ginger is great for attracting love and passion. Draws wealth, success, and prosperity.

Lemon Balm Tea

I grow lemon balm all summer, you can just put fresh leaves into water and let them steep. I really recommend it. Lemon balm is used to treat stress and anxiety, indigestion, heartburn, cold sores, and insomnia. It can be used in love spells, fertility spells, to help ease depression and anxiety. Lemon Balm brings calm, happiness, longevity, love, success, youthfulness, its great for psychic development, and keeping the mind working smoothly. It is often associated with the moon.
