Every entrepreneur starts somewhere. He goes through his own set of struggles before he can emerge as a successful entrepreneur. One of the best examples to follow is that of Elon Musk.
Elon Musk is the 48-year-old genius and CEO behind companies like SpaceX, Tesla, PayPal, SolarCity amongst others. He is also the co-founder of OpenAI and owns a fortune of around $20 Billion.
In 2017, he made history after successfully completing the first commercial rocket launch from the NASA launchpad. His brilliance with regards to the business started right from his childhood. At the age of 10, he started developing his own computer languages and by the time he was 12-years-old, he had developed a game called Blastar. After a few months, he sold the game for $500. In 2019, he was listed No. 1 on Forbes’ Innovative Leaders List and No.40 on the Billionaires list. However, Musk’s life was not a bed of roses. He had his own set of issues.
Until he was 8-years-old, Musk lived with his parents Maye and Errol Musk in South Africa. His mother was a beautiful Canadian Model while his father was a mechanical Engineer. However, by the time he was 10-years-old, his parents roped in for a divorce, and his father took his custody. After a few years, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Canada. This was approximately the time when he was learning and innovating. He spent a lot of time reading books and gathered information.
In one of his talks, he mentioned that he first learned about rockets by reading books. In one of his interviews for the magazine Rolling Stone, he said, “I was raised by books. Books, and then my parents.” He read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica at age 9 and read science fiction novels for more than 10 hours a day.
He studied Physics and Economics from the Wharton School and moved to Stanford to pursue his Ph.D. but left the program within a few days to start an internet startup with his brother. They started Zip2 with $28,000 borrowed from their father. He started living in his company office. In an interview with the Sunday Times of London, he said that he started living at his company’s rented office and showered at the local YMCA since it was cheaper than renting an apartment at that time.
In 1999, Compaq Computer cracked a deal with Musk and bought Zip2 for $307 million in cash. Musk received $22 million for the 7% share he had. This was the greatest breakthrough in his life. He became a millionaire at just the age of 28. In the same year, he used $10 million of the cash he had earned to start another company called X.com. This company was an online bank with a vision to become a complete provider of financial services to customers. Soon enough, Musk garnered the attention of potential investors who generously invested in X.com. The company received $25 million in start-up capital from a leading venture-capital firm called Sequoia Capital based in California.
Musk continued making profits and in 2000, X.com purchased a company called Confinity which had started an online money-transfer system called PayPal. Musk was taking over by the idea behind PayPal’s technology which was popular for the P2P or “person-to-person” system. And five months later, Musk renamed X.com and replaced it in favor of PayPal. The year 2001 saw the glory of PayPal and in 2002, PayPal rose to become a publicly-traded company. Musk held an 11.5% stake at PayPal which fetched him $165 million when Paypal was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.
In the same year, Musk founded SpaceX. And when he decided to learn rocket science, he studied textbooks on Astrophysics and Engineering. Today, Elon owns more than $70 million worth residential property in Los Angeles and his fifth latest home purchase is worth $24 million.

5. Constant Innovation
Innovation was Musk’s core innovation. It helped him reap benefits over the years. The success that it brought him was lauded by the world. Innovation is important to get success. This is the only way you can find solutions to business problems, generate profits and run ahead of your competitors.
