there's an essay jumbled up in my brain about dunmeshi's beginning and how clever and deceptive it is as a sleight-of-hand trick that distracts the audience from the depth and scope of the worldbuilding and foreshadowing that's being set up the entire time by dangling zany characters and wacky dishes and biology fun facts in front of us, and how that serves to catch invested viewers off guard when those elements come to the forefront, but also how it works against it with other viewers wanting "more" and not seeing it because the plot bait isn't laid out up front
how people getting frustrated with the characters "not taking things seriously" is mirrored and refuted in the confrontation between Laios and Shuro. how the characters' attitudes aren't just a result of shallow low-stakes "comedy rules" where nothing matters, but are an extension of their personalities (Laios's nonstandard expression of emotions being offputting even to people he knows) and the world and social environment (adventurers being desensitized to death and injury because resurrection magic is commonplace). the way the party refers to "saving Falin" instead of "retrieving Falin's corpse," indicating that they still see her with full personhood, and how that phrasing leads to some readers/viewers believing that Falin is alive in the dragon's stomach, conscious of being slowly digested while the party carelessly fucks around "wasting time." how the weird tonal dissonance makes sense in-universe and yet is deliberately challenged more and more the deeper the party goes
all the character building and pieces of lore slowly weaving together the shape of the larger world, laying the groundwork for the major themes that will surface later. so much is right there in the "low-stakes" early episodes if you know what you're looking for (or pass the perception checks).
it can be so satisfying to see new viewers/readers pick up on the clues even in the earliest "simple" episodes, or notice new things and make connections yourself....and it can also be frustrating to see people dismiss oddities and dissonance as shallow or bad writing because they don't expect a "cooking anime" to have depth like that. why try to question and understand and peel back the layers when you don't expect there to be any layers?
why can't laios take things seriously for once?

Hi,
I just noticed that in the scene that Hephaistion finds out that Alexander hid his father's illness from him, he tells Alexander to stop manipulating him. He also thinks Alexander doesn't even recognize what he's doing anymore...
It got me thinking, that Alexander trusted Hephaistion more than anyone is clear from history, but what about the opposite ?
So of course about the historical man it's a bit hard to tell, but what about your character?
Could Hephaistion fully trust Alexander? To me, somewhat ironically the answer would be no.
He will never be able to trust Alexander the way Alexander trusts him...
It might be almost imperceptible but it would still be there, part of their complicated power dynamics.
I'm interested in what you think about it :)
What I think about it...
You are a close reader and this is insightful.
Also true. ;-)
Thanks for picking up on little shades of characterization.
The only other thing I'd add--mostly for those a bit appalled--is that Alexandros is a prince, descended from Herakles and Achilles. Of course the world revolves around him. It's how he was raised to think. "All [people] are created equal" is a LONG-ass way in his future. And there will always be at least a little bit of a ... gap between him and anybody else. Even Hephaistion.
(Also, he did feel quite badly later, and was sorry. His apology was genuine, which is why Hephaistion accepted it. But he's still prince. And he'd still assume Hephaistion would take an arrow for him. That's why he has the Bodyguards.)

Why tf is there open season on wild cats?
Ugh
So this year with the harsh winter and overpopulation of deer and elk, a lot died.
So hunters freaked out that all their deer/elk were going to die
The state legislature had a completely unrelated bill that was already slated to pass. At the last minute, a part was added to make open season on cougars because they would…. Kill and eat deer.
This was passed without consulting any actual scientists and the DNR, done by just lawmakers. Basically it was done for nonsense reasons because people are still spreading anti predator rhetoric. Luckily cougars are generally too elusive for the average hunter, but there are people that are annoyingly proficient at it (I once saw a tinder bio where a guy posed with 5 different dead cougars. Hard pass)

Qatar World Cup 2022: Undermining FIFA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion
Nations need to break the silence to bring about change
In Qatar having same sex relationships can be punishable by the death penalty. In 2010 Qatar were the first middle eastern country to be announced as hosts for the 2022 World Cup.
Are the LGBTQ community safe to go and support their nation at the World Cup?
However, this caused widespread condemnation for many reasons, one being Qatar’s laws on LGBTQ rights. Despite these laws, the organisers provided reassurances that ‘everyone is welcome’. However, before the tournament had even started, it seemed that the World Cup was going to be more about politics and fairness, than football.
FIFA President’s Advice
In a letter to all 32 nations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino told countries to “focus on football”, and steer away from politics; directing nations to turn a blind eye to the various human rights issues. This caused further anger amongst fans and players. The latter were silenced from challenging the decisions that lead to Qatar hosting – the implication being that they should solely focus on matters on the pitch.
Controversy surrounding the One Love Armband On the eve of the tournament eight European nations were set to wear the One Love armband as a symbol of support for diversity, human rights, and inclusion. The rainbow colours were specifically in support of the LGBTQ community. However, just days before the tournament, FIFA declared there would be sanctions for any players wearing the armband, and they could face a booking, or potentially not even be allowed on the pitch. Regrettably, all eight countries decided to U-turn on their decision. Many fans, players and pundits expressed disappointment at the decision.
David Beckham as a World Cup Ambassador
Sporting icons such as David Beckham chose to endorse the Qatar World Cup. David Beckham signed a £150m deal to be an ambassador. Previously David was seen as something of a gay icon.
Football vs Homophobia
Due to the deep routed hegemonic masculinity in sporting cultures the FA needs to do more at grass roots level to provide a safe space for LGBTQ players to reinforce their rights and punish homophobic behaviour. Players need to make a stand, and support charities such as Football vs Homophobia and the Rainbow Laces campaign to help shine a light on these issues.
What’s next?
FIFA should make it a condition of future World Cups that only countries who respect human rights and diversity should be awarded the tournament. Until this is done, FIFA will continue to suffer from negative headlines and public criticism, as not enough progress is being made.
Show Your Support for the LGBTQ Community
If you agree that we need a call to change and want to show your support for LGBTQ rights, then join Stonewalls’ #Proudstadium and share this with friends and family who support the LGBTQ community. You can also join the rainbow laces campaign by wearing rainbow laces on your trainers or football boots to support inclusion in sport. Contact FIFA to stop countries like Qatar criminalizing the LGBTQ community from being awarded the rights to host major tournaments in future.
Do you think Qatar should have been allowed to host the World Cup given the backlash and negative media coverage FIFA have faced?
