Goddess of Strategy and War, sharp and battle worn; Solid as your Aegis, you march upright into battle To greet fellow generals of war with salutations.

Zeus swallowed his first wife, Metis, after hearing a prophesy that Metis would give birth to a son who would overthrow Zeus. But one day, Zeus had such a headache that Hephaestus cracked Zeus’s skull with an axe…and out came Athena, fully grown and armored.

Athena challenged Arachne to a weaving contest when Arachne claimed she could weave better than Athena. Arachne, a mortal, weaved scenes of Zeus’s love affairs, and the angry Athena turned her into a spider.

Impressed by the wit of Greek hero Odysseus, Athena helped guide him back home after 20 years away from home: 10 years of Trojan War, plus 10 years of wandering on the sea cursed by Poseidon.

Modern Worshippers: Athene

Libraries are their fortresses, the Web and TV their scouts. Skype calls are made as the newest terrorist attack or war attack is broadcast as they make live commentary on the best way to handle it. Books and journals are scattered everywhere in their rooms; every nook and cranny has some book precariously perched on an already too-high stack. Hand-made and hand-decorated pots hold flowers and aloe vera plants on sunny windowsills and balconies and backyards. Some fiddle with string and play Cat’s Cradle during the weekly intelligence conference while still others create Rube Goldberg machines that end up feeding their host’s cat or dog or bird or bunny. Everyone tends to keep band-aids in stock in case someone pricks a finger while needlepointing. Some have bags under their eyes from studying and others bruises and scraps form self-defense classes.

A ravenous mind is their all-consuming weapon.
