This is a fanblog for The Wildersongs Trilogy by Maiga Doocy. Book #1 (A Sorcery and Small Magics) comes out October 15, 2024 and future books are forthcoming. Yes, I know it's weird to start a blog before the first book is officially out but I read the ARC and I am hooked!

Update from Maiga's Newsletter
Maiga's latest newsletter includes this tidbit:
I’m planning to take January off from both the newsletter and Instagram in order to focus on drafting book 2! Since it’s still being written there are very few details I can give on that front, but I’m excited to immerse myself fully in Leo and Grimm’s next adventure and can’t wait until I can share more about it with you all at some point in 2025.
A sign we might get a title or perhaps even release date in 2025? 🤞
You can sign up for her newsletter here, by the way!

I actually believe leo's curse was broken when they were in that cave/valley, because grimm told him to take out his sword when they saw the monster but leo didn't. also grimm absolutely threw himself in front of the arrow out of love

*quietly* Take Spotify away from me
As usual check back every few months to see if I add any songs to it. I lost my copy of the book so it may not be accurate (I’m hoping to find it tonight)

I love when a character says something and you think it means one thing but then later when you learn more about them you find it it actually means something different. like grimm saying he once used a specific counterspell to change his hair back to its natural color and you think he meant turning it back from the pink that leo caused. but actually he meant he was trying to change it back to its original original color, before he cast the endless rain that made his hair go gray

I can't stop thinking about sorcery and small magics 😭 what a book
the magic system alone is so so cool with there being sorcerers who write the spells and sorcerers who cast them, but then our main character scribe sorcerer created spellsongs where he uses music to write the spells and that lets him cast magic beyond what he should be capable of!!!!
spoilers
ahh and the way how the curse can be broken if the caster falls in love with the cursed and it's so obvious grimm fell in love with leo at the end which was how the curse broke not because he did the counterspell but also with the curse broken it means leo is no longer in love with grimm 😭 what a cruel twist

Okay, but we can all agree that the curse was lifted in one of two ways:
Grimm recklessly casting the counterspell while Leo was unconscious → He probably felt super guilty that Leo almost died. Especially because the curse definitely influenced Leo’s decision to save him. Grimm wouldn’t want to wait another second before getting ride of it after all the pain it’s caused.
Grimm started reciprocating feelings!!! They are legit soulmates so there’s no issue. Except the secrecy!
Either way, guys, please get it together.

I am beyond excited to learn more about Sebastian Grimm in book 2 of the Wildersongs trilogy. But here is a incomplete list of what we DO know about him:
He hates lying to his mom <3
His hair lost its pigment after overusing his magic while casting for the first time
People think he overly scrutinizes spells, but he’s really memorizing them to account for his reading disorder
He planned to take over his mom’s flower trade before discovering he was a caster
His ears turn red when he’s embarrassed
Grimm understood there was a serious issue of Leo’s consent while under the curse (avoided commands, never took Leo’s affection as truth)
He acts similar to his mentor, Phade, who nominated him to the Fount when he was 11
He gets motion sick, poor guy
Phade is the only instructor in the Fount that’ll allow Grimm and Leo to work together
He’s trying to join the Coterie and get a seat in the Citadel so he can change the system from within (we love a man who can organize for systemic change)
People from his village, Dwull, have ostracized him since he was a kid. They blame him for losing control of the rain spell and the subsequent flooding (that distance from others has followed him to the Fount)
He seems only mildly affronted that Leo's Grandmagic threw him out a window in second tier
That man has so much restraint and I just need to know what he’s holding back. Biting his tongue to keep from saying what? Holding himself in check so much that his body trembles from effort. What was he going to do?!
We need his POV in the next book!! Grimm may have be outwardly put together, but Ik inside must be raging.

Just finished reading “Sorcery and Small Magics” by Maiga Doocy and it’s having me rethink my whole taste in books because I thought I hated romantasy but apparently if you give me a disaster gay with a true slowburn rivals to allies to maybe-friends to possibly-one-day-lovers arc with his forced proximity outwardly put-together bf I will eat it the fuck up
Leovander Loveage my beloved????
Medium stakes that is comfy but still has an engaging plot that can be intense when it needs to be my beloved????
Cool and interesting world-building that’s well-integrated into the story my beloved????
Did I mention Leovander Loveage my beloved???? Because I love him dearly.
Apparently this book came out like a month ago and there’s no fandom for it yet which is a crime against me personally. I cannot be the only one out here fighting for my life waiting for book 2.

October Book Reviews: Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy
Tumblr media
One of my anticipated new releases for this year. When a misplaced spell goes unexpectedly awry, petty sorcerer in training Leovander Lovage is tied to the hated rival he's obsessed with. Since they have mistakenly performed forbidden illegal magic that could destroy their careers before they even start, the young men must keep their situation under wraps while attempting to undo the curse.
As an angst and suffering enjoyer, my experience with books marketed as "cozy fantasy" has been more miss than hit. This book, on the other hand, was unexpectedly a delight. The stakes here are personal rather than world-shaking, but Our Protagonists are having a very bad time, which is what counts. I like how it's obvious from very early on that Leovander's feelings for his supposed university rival Grimm are more like "obsessed" and "feels compelled to poke him with a stick." The mistaken obedience curse develops in some interesting ways over the course of the book, rather than being simply used as an excuse to shove the protagonists together. There's a fancy ball, people flunking out of magic classes, monster attacks (many), and a very interesting magic system that requires that sorcerers work in pairs.
Wonderful idiot magic undergrad shenanigans. Highly recommended if you liked A Taste of Gold and Iron or Swordcrossed, although do keep in mind that the book ends on a cliffhanger and does NOT resolve the romance plotline in this book. (There's presumably a sequel planned, but nothing has been announced yet.)

Leo saying he is predisposed to like anyone who tries to take care of him. And Grimm spending the entire rest of the novel trying to convince Leo to not shoulder his burdens alone. I swear the moments of unspoken care between these two make me weak.

Grimm plans to help Leo plant starflowers at the Sahnt estate because they are too hardy to kill. But… we romantics know flower language is essential for silently communicating one’s deeper feelings via a flower’s symbolic meaning. So let’s explore the potential significance behind the starflower.
There are a few different species of flowers dubbed ‘starflower’, each with their own symbolism:
Lysimachia borealis (Starflower) is the flower for ‘one who seeks peace or tranquility’.
Pentas lanceolata (Egyptian starflower) represents harmony and chaos. It is associated with bounty, good luck, and balance.
Trientalis latifolia (Pacific starflower) ‘embodies wellness and the ability to thrive against the odds’ as well as beauty, grace, prosperity, and growth.
Ornithogalum arabicum (Arabian starflower) represents hope, and the continuation of happiness and love.

All of these specific meanings for the starflower reveals Grimm’s deeper affections. After he’s finished with the Fount, Leo’s dream is to go home. I think it's no coincidence that Grimm chose a flower acutely associated with peace and wellness. And the Starflower being a token of love is such a beautiful gesture.
