Out of the Mist was originally meant to be a temporary title for the song, almost a joke: it was given by Luna with the foggy Pianura Padana in mind. Banshee then decided she wanted to write lyrics for that song keeping the title, but with a different meaning: the mist as the uncertainty from which we try to emerge in life. The lyrics were written as a form of revenge on ourselves, going through fire and shame to find a better self and a renewed sense of freedom from the past. Sold(ier) was born on a more recent date than the previous two analyzed songs. Both music and lyrics saw the light in 2017. This piece is certainly not quieter than Bleeding Rust. It talks about someone who thinks they’re higher and better than everyone else, without acknowledging their own flaws and limits. Sold(ier) surely is a strange title: it’s made with the words “Sold” and “Soldier”, symbolizing the substantial differences between the ones who only know selling themselves as a way to emerge and the ones who have to fight for what they want to achieve in life. The chorus contains a reference to Emilie Autumn’s “In The Lake”: the sentences “Your lake will run dry / I have the ocean as goal” are a tribute to Autumn’s “My sea is deeper than your lake”. Bleeding Rust’s lyrics go back to 2008, just as The Meadow of Sins; it was one of the most prolific years lyrics-wise for Banshee. After being badly hurt by one most important person in her life, her love turned to hate and rage. This is how Bleeding Rust was born. “Rust” refers to the nickname this person once gave himself and thus gives a dual meaning to the song title. The lyrics for "The Meadow of Sins" are complex and almost dreamlike… or rather, nightmare-like. They were written in 2008 during a very difficult stage of Banshee’s life; she states she doesn’t even remember why she used certain terms throughout the song, which is unusual for her style of writing. However, the lyrics remained incomplete until a day before recording the song: she couldn’t ever find the right way to end them. They were then finished with a direct quote from a monologue contained in “The Haunting of Hill House”. The lyrics transformed from an oneiric confusion to a dedication for one of Banshee’s best friends, who died only a few weeks before entering the studio in 2019.
