You both used to be friends. Close friends. He used to come by your place when his mom was high, you'd come to his when your dad was fighting with his most recent partner.

It was rough back then, two kids from Crime Alley against the world. But you made it work, you were as happy as you both could be -- before he got adopted by Bruce Wayne and disappeared almost instantly out of your life.

You didn't know how to take it. Him living big and shiny while you... planned your dad's funeral with some distant family members. Drunk driving, he hit a lamp post and it fell over. It didn't hit you hard, you felt he was going to die a death similar. Matter of time.

You also didn't know how to handle his death a few years later. How do you mourn someone who you haven't seen for so long? He hadn't even come to see you, and you didn't want to bother. Jason's death was even more shocking -- confidential to a terrorist attack? He was smart enough to stay away from those areas.

He probably had so many others come over to his grave to leave flowers. But you came anyway, after the service. With a small flower of your own and a chilli dog in the other.

A dandelion, a small nod to your childhood together when he picked some tiny flowers from the moss that grew over damp areas around the alleys you both would skedaddle off to, for you. You left the chilli dog by his grave, wrapped nicely, with the flower laying on top. He was an idiot for not keeping in contact. You cried a little anyway. The last person to know you by heart had died and you were left alone again.

A few years later, you got your diploma in computer engineering and got a job as a cyber security analyst for a well-known tech company. From a crappy apartment, you've upgraded to a decent one a little outside of Gotham City, not too far so you don't miss the stench of cigarettes and the sound of vigilantes fighting in the streets. Just enough to be safe from trouble. That was until you were given a new task at work. It was different from the rest, your boss gave more serious undertones in his emails. Freaks you out a little bit. Alas, you work from home, trouble arrives nowhere near where you live. Perhaps, it would be better to be a little naive.

That was, until, the strangest thing happened.

"Quit your job. I'm serious, (Name)," His voice was stern and strong, his posture intimidating. He stands before you with all his gear; guns in holsters, fists with brass under his gloves. Red Hood stands in the middle of your living room, watching you freak under his stare.

"Fuck no. What?!" You yelled, gripping onto your frying pan like it was going to help you dodge any of his bullets. "You're in my house! I'm not even close to your area?!"

"What're you even doing here-- How'd you know my name--," Your nervous rambling was cut off by him holding the top of the frying pan and pushing it away. He's mindful not to take it from you, but not too mindful about keeping a respectful distance.

You were going to piss yourself.

"(Name), you're digging too deep in spaces you don't wanna find yourself in. You need to leave your job and lay low. It's not safe," He says, quietly this time. Much softer. He was reasoning with you, begging even. Like he cared.

You knew Red Hood wasn't cruel to innocent civilians, but when he shows up, it's never a good sign. He's the one people call to eradicate someone from the face of the earth, he started his career strong by beheading 8 men and carrying their heads around in a bowling bag.

You looked at him in the eyes -- or where they should be behind his mask, took a deep breath and relaxed your grip on the frying pan.

"Why should I trust you?" You asked him, your tone serious and unsure. He hesitates for a bit before standing up straight. The vigilante stares at you for a solid second, your bravery falters for a moment. "Don't freak out," He asks. You want to argue but he takes his mask off.

"You've got a type," Roy jokes, lightly shoving his friend as he swivles his cup of juice. His eyes turning to the newbie vigilante across the room, stressing over the cups knocked over on the table.

"Yeah? What's that?" Jason rolls his eyes, adjusting himself on the wall. His eyes never leave your back.

"Scary," Roy hums, taking a sip of his juice as he watches you stack the cups again annoyingly.

It's been a while, you know. Probably a decade. Last you checked, he upped and died after getting adopted from the Alley you both grew up in. His shirt used to be as dirty as yours. Your smarts still match his, even more actually. Both were practically inseparable before--

Well.

"I don't know why you guys don't just talk," Roy muses. "It's not like you don't know each other."

"We don't," Jason answers harshly, his eyes looking away from you to his friend. "I'm not the kid that played mechanic anymore. Besides, I've got blood on my hands."

Its quiet. The house is still buzzing with friends and family. Wayne's mansion was grand as always. Jason always looks out of place in a space like this. Especially in celebrations, he typically never shows up. Not even for his own birthday. Much less Dick's.

Where he currently is.

The real question is: "Why is he here?"

Dick knows Jason won't come to the party. Everyone does. In typical Jaybird fashion, he'd send a text a few days late wishing his family a 'happy birthday' (if they're lucky).

He's a self-sufficient guy. The hyper independent, gruff, bad boy vigilante with a few screws loose. He does fine on his own.

So Dick brings in his screws; you. Jason fell for it like a sheep.

"How did Dick even--" Jason starts, feeling frustrated over the situation. Roy cuts him off.

"I told him."

"Honest to God I could kill you right now, Roy."

"In my defense, it sounded good at the time."

"I almost chopped their head off? What the fuck do you mean it sounded good?!"

"They threw like 15 bombs at you. Something tells me they don't just die easy."

"Christ, you're insufferable," Jay pinches the bridge of his nose. Needing silence above all else at the moment for the migraine that was shooting up his psyche. "i need some fresh air. DON'T follow me. I'll shoot your ass."

Jason leaves before Roy could say a word.

The balcony doors push open. Cold air pricks his cheeks and he takes a deep, deep breath of the polluted Gotham air. He rests his elbows on the railings, overseeing the city raining with crime.

Home.

There's a beat of silence. Before he sighs heavily, holding his head in his hands.

"Why am I like this," He asks himself in a low, tired voice. One he uses when he's sure he's alone. "Fuck's wrong with me. Can't be normal for five fucking seconds."

"Honestly, it was like 46 minutes but who's counting?"

Jason arms himself with his gun as swift as possible, his eyebrows furrow angrily as he makes sense of the silhouette standing by the balcony door behind him.

"Better than beheading, I'd say," You roll your eyes, walking up to him unfazed.

"You-- I-- Give me like 5 seconds," He locks in, immediately stuffing his gun in his holster. Fuck, since when did he stutter.

"Time's up," You answer smoothly, leaning on the railing with your body turned to his own rigid stance. "Speak, big boy."

"How'd you know I was out here?"

"You're a big guy," You answer, shrugging. "Also, Roy."

"Fucking ginger," He sighs, massaging his temples. "Don't do this to me."

"Do what?"

"Pretend we're talking. Like we're friends again."

"I'm not doing anything you don't want me doing," You put your hands up in surrender. "Talk when you want."

It felt like hours had passed by in the quiet that the cold had started to nick at your skin. Cars had passed, small amounts of people had left. For once, Jason didn't want to disappoint someone more than he already has -- he's stuck in his own head. He had to say something.

Anything.

Anything that isn't so fucking stupid.

"I... I missed... you," He says through gritted teeth, his eyes never meeting yours -- his heart pounding and nervous.

He should've died in the Pit.

The second of silence you left had him consider every escape option possible.

You snort loudly and burst out laughing. It catches him off guard. It was noisy, loud -- full of life. You grip the railing as you hold your stomach.

"I--," You heave, snickering through your words. "I-- I missed you too."

"What the fuck," Jason mutters under his breath as the strong smell of blood invades his nostrils. He dropped the pizza boxes, abandoning Roy and Artemis at the door as he bolted throughout his childhood friend's apartment.

His mind was racing. His heart was beating fast. He just texted you an hour ago while he was at the store, asking you what your favourite toppings were. What the fuck is this luck??

He stops and stares at the trail of blood leading to your door. His breath hitches.

"No," He starts. "No. Nono. No. Nonononononono--" He rambles as his hand gripped the doorknob.

He opens the door. His eyes widen like dinner plates.

"Oh. Hey!" You smiled cheerfully, breathing heavily as if you'd ran a mile. A dead man lays on your bed, a knife struck to his neck and stab wound on his stomach.

"Didn't care to knock?" You sigh, wiping the blood off your hands. "Sorry for the mess. Assassins, these days suck absolute ass. Can't imagine someone paying for bad service."

it's been stated ad nauseum by now... but the fact that comics miguel is a deeply flawed person who has made mistakes that no one is obliged to forgive is very much the entire point. his past actions are meant to inspire disdain as much as the reader is rooting for him in the present while he earnestly tries to be better.

that's what's powerful about his story and the real reason why it has an enduring audience. he's an abuse survivor who has been taught his whole life that stepping out of line will get him punished—lo and behold, when he says he can no longer stomach the way alchemax treats people and tries to abandon a seemingly-guaranteed comfortable life, he is drugged.

this is not a moment that inspires any conviction or bravery. like every time he's watched his father beat his mother, beat him—like every time tyler has given him thinly veiled threats, he is terrified. there is not a second he is not afraid out of his mind.

he decides to do the right thing anyway. they punish him and for once, and from now on, he is doubling down. and doesn't that make a lovely character? one who has every reason to turn the other way, and continue being the empty person he has been for years, but wants to be more? who turns out to be too full of compassion to turn a blind eye, no matter how hard he tried?

every second he chooses to be better the message should be this: who i used to be does not make me who i am. my blood does not make me who i am. my abuse does not make me who i am. i am what i make me.

the tone that settles on his voice, ah, the love and sincerity laced through it, along with his eyes filled with adoration because his vision is already full of your pretty smiling face as soon as the words escape him.

"my wife actually told me about that the other dayー" he muses to one of his coworkers when he overhears something related to your interests.

"need to go back to my wife..." he murmurs under his breath when he notices the sky darkening, ready to head home, to you.

"my wife will certainly like these, hm.." he notes for himself after seeing something you'd have on his way home.

and when he is finally greeted by you, he hugs you close to himself, looking at you with the softest expression and even softer smile, and kisses you, muttering "my beautiful wife" full of love into your mouth.
