For all the conversation about Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang being foils, and what Wei Wuxian would be like if he stayed on the streets, I personally think he would be a lot like Ah Qing actually. Incredibly smart, a bit of a trickster, very heroic in theirs own way.
I love them both.

How it started:
Wei WuXian grinned and pointed at himself, “How about this one?”
Lan WangJi, “Mine.”
“…”
Lan WangJi stared at him, slowly and articulately stating, “Mine.”
Chapter 31, Dew- Part Four
How it’s going:
Wei WuXian, “You haven’t even played this before? Let me explain. It’s really simple. Take this hoop, walk a bit backward, and toss it onto the things on the ground. Whatever it lands on is yours.”
Lan WangJi repeated, “Whatever it lands on is mine.”
[…]
There was another hoop in Lan WangJi’s hand. Holding it, he weighed it gently yet firmly. This time, he only tossed it backward a moment later, and he immediately turned around to check.
After he tossed, exclamations came from all around him. The hoop was so off that it didn’t even touch the edge of the area. Despite this, it landed without fault on and around Wei WuXian’s body.

Wei Wuxian might actually be my favourite depiction of an adult interacting with unrelated kids that I’ve ever seen in fiction. He reminds me of the adults I look back on fondly from when I was growing up, and of the adult I want to be when interacting with teens through work etc.
He’s fun and silly and teases them, but knows when to step up as the adult in the situation and be responsible.
His degrees of closeness to them are appropriate; closer to the ones who are “his kids” (ie Jin Ling as his nephew and Sizhui eventually as his son), and friendly but not excessively so with the others.
He actively watches out for the kids and protects them from danger, but also gives them practical advice and opportunities to spread their own wings and exercise their own abilities.
He impresses upon them that they don’t need to achieve the things their fathers and uncles had by their age: he was there, he knows those tales of glory are rooted in blood and suffering, and he works to free the juniors from the pressure to hold themselves up to that shallow veneer of triumph as a standard.
He even occasionally drops good relationship advice even before he and Lan Wangji get their shit together: the bit in Yi City where he refuses to waste time on the whole “I won’t leave without you!” thing and instead tells the kids essentially, “No. I trust him, and I have to do what I need to do, and leave him to do what he needs to do,” really sticks with me.
Anyway…rambling, but yeah. I love him, and I love that he’s sometimes a disaster but he is so good at switching to Adulting Mode as needed. Also there’s definitely some very bittersweet thoughts to be had about the fact that, aside from his brief sweet memories of his parents, Yanli was definitely the one who taught him how to be a caretaker. And now, he gets to use what she taught him to watch over her son.

I feel like Wei Wuxian doesn’t get jealous of people admiring his husband but proud because, yes, his husband is the best, thank you for noticing. Of course Lan Wangji is amazing. This is simply the natural order of the universe.
So conversely whenever someone doesn’t think the world of Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian is immediately like ‘what is wrong with you’. This Does Not Compute for him. Immediate offense. Full on three hour lecture about Lan Wangji’s many, many great qualities. Power point and pictures included.

Hanguang-Jun, Wei Ying and the juniors are on their way back home from a night hunt when they decide to stop in a nearby town at a festival. They're quite easy to spot, it's impossible not to notice them, they stand out in the best of ways - unfortunately not everybody agrees.
"That shameless man! I'd never leave my house if I did the kind of horrible things he did!" A man proclaimed, quite loudly, side-eyeing Wei Ying. "What a joke! In my prime, if anyone saw the Yiling Laozu up and about, they'd be required by law to kill him! Now the Lan sect is backing him up! How preposterous!"
Lan Jingyi sends the man a nasty glare and is on the point of opening his mouth, but Hanguang-Jun interrupts him before he is able. His voice is cold, threatening almost, loud enough to be within the man's earshot.
"Lan Jingyi. Do not waste your time correcting small-minded people. Their intellect is limited and their judgement is... flawed, at best, absent at worst."
The man immediately turns his head, eyes wide. Wei Ying busies himself with browsing through the merchandise on a stall so he doesn't burst out laughing.
"Hanguang-Jun is right." Sizhui adds, his voice as icy as his senior's. "We are cultivators of a prestigious clan, listening in to such shameless, baseless talk is beneath us, let alone enganging in any such lowly conversation."
The man scurries away, red in the face, and it's only then that Wei Ying allows himself a laugh. "My, my, I have quite the protection squad! Though I am surprised to see you have such a sharp tongue, Sizhui."
"Swearing is not allowed, so I had to learn to express my disdain otherwise, Wei-qianbei." Sizhui smiles, cute and serene as if he hadn't just torn into a man three seconds ago.
"Yeah, we learned from Hanguang-Jun!" Jingyi intervenes, 'When we went to our first Discussion Conference, the way he told sect leader Jiang off was so-"
"Lan Jingyi."
"...apologies, Hanguang-Jun."
"Wait, you told Jiang Cheng off?! In a discussion conference?!"
"Mn."
"In front of God and everyone?!"
"Mn."
Wei Ying sighs, theatrical. "Man, why did I have to die? I wish I was there to see it!"
"I could do it again."
Both Lan Jingyi and Wei Ying gasped, excited. "Really?!"

I have a couple - rather rude - asks in my inbox. Normally, I rather delete but since one was trying to hit my character directly, I think I wanna say something.
When I talk about WWX being righteous and don't give a rat's ass about him digging up bodies during the war, I'm not coming from a place of ignorance.
Idk who will understand what I'm saying now but I'm a Vaishnav and I have read the Bhagwat Gita from start to end. Several times.
So, it is ingrained in me that deception and cruelty are bad things but if you have to be deceptive or cruel to restore righteousness and end evil, even those acts are righteous.
So, in my eyes, WWX doesn't suddenly turn evil or less just because he raised a thousand corpses or killed a thousand enemies.
In fact, according to my moral core, anyone that didn't do as much as they could to stop evil are *lesser* and *failing*.
Any attempt to label me as a blind and ignorant fan is hilarious at best.
I don't justify WWX's actions because I like him. It is WWX's just actions that make me like him.
If he didn't tick all the fucking boxes of morality for me, I wouldn't spend more than a year in this fandom.
I have better things to do with my time.

I'm always surprised when I see people outright condemn WWX for "being an asshole" when he is actually being so incredibly sweet and thoughtful. WWX is never an "asshole" anyway, he's one of the kindest, most empathetic characters in the novel! But I find it so odd how people could read his actions so negatively and come to such a conclusion when there is so much evidence to the contrary.
According to some, WWX bringing the rabbits to LWJ was just him trying to annoy the other. Now people can argue with me all they want, but I will never be discouraged that WWX gifted LWJ the two rabbits because he thought he was a little lonely.
On this day, he was once again swarmed by seven or eight youths to go out. As they passed by the Lan Library Pavilion, he took a glance up. Through the light-concealing yulan magnolia branches, he could see Lan Wangji sitting there alone by the window.
Chapter 7S translation
WWX looks for LWJ, hoping to spot him. It's obvious because he instinctively looks up at the very window of the room he sat with him in during his punishment. He was hoping to spot him! And luckily for him, LWJ was actually sat there looking back at him.
One thing I think is very apparent in the above scene, is the comparison between WWX being surrounded by others and LWJ sat alone. I don't think this goes unnoticed by WWX either, who is always very emotionally aware and certainly likes to make a fuss over LWJ - even in his first life!
So I think it's extra sweet when he brings him the bunnies a few hours later 🐇💕🐇
“This place of yours is weird too. No pheasants, but lots of wild bunnies, and they’re not afraid of people. What do you think? They’re chubby, right? Want them?”
It's just so cute how excited WWX is to present these two bunnies to him. He's so eager for LWJ to want them! Yes, he mentions cooking them, but I'm pretty sure this is a joke and a way to provoke LWJ into accepting the bunnies. After all it's totally within his character to "trick" people into doing something or accepting something they need or want. *Disclaimer! I'm not going to lie though, I think WWX would have barbecued the fluff balls if he truly thought LWJ didn't want them! That boy is hungry 😂
Wei Wuxian started snickering, sitting on the windowsill. “Now you want them? Look at you, always acting like this.”
Contrary to what WWX sometimes believes, he can read LWJ extremely well at times. He can tell, just like LXC did when he said he didn't want the loquat WWX was trying to give him, that he is saying 'no', but he really wants to say yes!
To me, the whole bunny scene is just adorable and shows how kind WWX is. How much he thinks about LWJ and just how desperately wants his attention! How anyone can think he's being horrible, is beyond me!

The way wangxian take care of each other it's all about the little things.
For example, when Lan Wangji had that meal in Yiling with Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan, all he ordered were spicy dishes so Wei Wuxian could eat more. He wasn't expecting wwx to notice or to thank him, he just wanted him to eat the things he loves the most. Wei Wuxian didn't even notice it until years later!
Or the way Wei Wuxian is always trying to keep Lan Wangji clean at all costs. Even when Lan Wangji was drunk, his way of "teasing" him and "taking advantage of the situation" was removing his boots, laying him down on the bed and washing his face. Just, taking care of him. Even though Lan Wangji wouldn't remember anyhting the next morning.
I love that they just do these things that might go unnoticed without expecting anything in return. And the novel is full of them.
We know that wangxian are very capable of doing grand gestures to show their love for each other, but it's these little gestures that really get to me. They don't expect the other person to reciprocate or even notice what they have done, they just want to see the person they love happy and comfortable.
I don't know but I feel it's such a sweet and selfless way of showing love... and honestly, it suits them so much.

Cannot get over the amount of the impact Wei Wuxian had on the cultivation world as a scholar.
As for why they looked familiar… How could they have not come across as familiar? The creator of Phantom Attraction Flags was none other than the YiLing Patriarch!
It seemed like that, although the cultivation world hated him on the surface, they still used the the inventions that he came up with.
There’s obviously his inventions.
But also,
The cultivation world had a strict definition for the category of “ferocious ghosts”—they had to kill at least one person a month and continue the behaviour for at least three months. The criterion was set by Wei WuXian himself, and it was probably still being used. He was the best at dealing with this kind.
The fact that he created the criteria???
They use his ideas so much and so often, he had such a present and lasting impact on the world, and it makes the cultivation world’s hypocrisy even more glaring considering they curse his name to that day but he’s also their most trusted source for so many things.
