Arai family portrait! A very rare sight and a very annoyed ten year old Sykho.

I wanted to have a final design for his father, so a portrait was a good possibility here. I drew Kiona before, but I really love her design (even though her headpiece is killing me)

Sykho was born to Zarrek Arai and Kiona Arai, a union forged not out of love but political convenience. Kiona, the daughter of a high-ranking Syndicate official, was a sought-after match, and she agreed to the marriage out of duty rather than affection. Zarrek was an ambitious and arrogant man, consumed by his position and the pursuit of power. He viewed his own son less as a child and more as an heir, a tool to carry on the Arai bloodline and strengthen the family’s influence within the Syndicate.

Kiona, however, raised Sykho largely on her own. Her bond with her son grew strong and unshakable, built on trust and genuine care, something Sykho never received from his father. Zarrek and Sykho rarely crossed paths, and when they did, it was often marked by cold indifference or veiled expectations. Zarrek and Kiona themselves lived separate lives, only appearing together in public when Syndicate events demanded a show of unity. For Sykho, his father remained more of a distant figurehead than a parent. (…)

I always wanted to draw them together with newborn Gereon! (Even if his birth is like 10 years away from where the story currently is) But these two thugs will have him at some point 👀

6 BBY - Gereon was a wish they’d both buried under years of crimes, duty, and survival. After the many years they spent together, they had wanted him, desperately, silently, but a connection like theirs had never promised such a future. Their bond had always defied the odds, but a child? That had felt like asking too much from a galaxy that gave so little.

When Ti’ad first realized she was carrying life - their life - she didn’t know how to speak it aloud. Not from fear, but from disbelief. And when she told Sykho, he had gone still. Like the world had shifted beneath his feet. Because the thought that something of him lived within her, that her body, her blood, had eventually held on to a piece of both of them, was too vast for words.

And when Gereon was born, impossibly small yet fierce with life, they both stared at him as if the galaxy had rewritten its rules just for them. Sykho, who had bled and killed for the Syndicate, had never known reverence until that moment. Ti’ad, who had seen death more often than mercy, held their son like something sacred. He wasn’t just their miracle, he was proof that even in a world as broken as theirs, something pure could be born. (…)

Story to go with under the cut! 🔽

The cantina hummed with the low thrum of Pyke voices and distant music, thick with the scent of spice smoke and old metals. In the back corner, beneath a flickering overhead light, a crowd had gathered around a small, battered table, where Ti’ad and Sykho sat, hands locked in the middle of an impromptu arm-wrestling match.

Ti’ad’s brow was furrowed, lips drawn into a determined line, icy blue eyes fixed on Sykho’s hand. Her fingers gripped his tightly, muscles tensed beneath the sleeve of her tunic. Across from her, Sykho leaned lazily forward, unbothered, a slow, amused grin curling at the corner of his mouth. His posture was relaxed, like he wasn’t even trying.

“You’re awfully confident for someone who’s about to lose,” Ti’ad growled, her voice low but sharp.

Sykho gave a quiet, rumbling chuckle, tilting his head slightly. “Flattering. But you’ll have to do better than that, Ti.”

Around them, a few Pyke soldiers muttered bets under their breath, exchanging credits and watching the tension rise. Threya stood just behind Ti’ad’s shoulder, arms crossed, a long-suffering expression playing across her face as she rolled her eyes at the two.

Ti’ad grit her teeth and pushed harder, her arm trembling slightly from the effort. But Sykho’s didn’t move. Not an inch. His grin widened, black eyes glinting in the cantina light.

“Stubborn,” he mused. “I like that.”

“Oh, shut up,” Ti’ad hissed through clenched teeth, pushing with everything she had.

And then, just as she thought her strength was about to give, his resistance softened. Barely noticeable, unless you knew him. He let his arm tilt, just enough, and Ti’ad slammed his hand down against the table with a triumphant thud.

The gathered crowd gave a mix of laughs and cheers, some shaking their heads knowingly.

Ti’ad smirked, breathing hard, brushing a strand of hair back from her face as she looked at him, triumphant but suspicious. “You let me win, idiot.”

Sykho just smiled, low and quiet. “Did I?”

Before Ti’ad could throw another comment his way, Threya groaned loudly, stepping forward. “Dank farrik. Get a room already. Spare the rest of us with your flirty banter.“

The table erupted in laughter, and even Sykho gave a rare, warm laugh, his gaze never leaving Ti’ad’s. She shook her head, biting back a smile.
