Happy New Year everyone. Here's one of my best moments of 2013. I have been very lucky to visit Iceland numerous times, this is one of the best displays of a Northern Lights I have ever seen! Have a great 2014!

I'm having one of those days where I am totally missing Iceland! I have been to Iceland three times and I don't know if I could ever get tired of the place. Every year it changes and there is always something different to do. I have recommended Iceland to many friends and it is totally worth every penny. Me and Katy are heading out there again for New Years Eve. New Years in Reykjavik is the best! Bonfire night is pathetic compared to the amount of fireworks on NYE in Reykjavik! 10 months and counting!

Iceland’s best known landmark collapsed
You never know what is going to happen in Iceland. One of Iceland’s best known tourist destinations is the Þingvellir National Park. One of the things that everybody explores when they visit is Almannagjá, a large crack in the ground created by the two continental plates moving apart. Nearly every tourist who’s visited Iceland has walked along the bottom of the crack. Now the crack has been closed to the public, since we just discovered we weren’t really walking on the bottom. A small crack in the path began appearing in March. It began growing slowly until recently when it has literally become large enough to swallow a truck.
It seems that people have actually been walking on top of a very thin layer of soil, with quite a void below them. By some stroke of luck, it has not collapsed with anybody walking along the top. The main road went down along the crack bottom until 1967. However the last person to be allowed to drive along the bottom was the President of China in 2002. It would have been quite interesting if the ground would have swallowed him and his escort.
Now people are debating how to tackle the situation. The quick and simple solution is just to fill the new crack up with gravel and it will look just like it looked before and when the Vikings held their first parliament gathering here? Or should we accept that Þingvellir is a very interesting and active volcanic area and find a way to show this deep crack to people? I vote for the second option, make some sort of bridge across the crack and see how it develops.

Wow! This is amazing! I paused the video when i was in Iceland last December and was surprised by how many earthquakes there were whilst i was there. Cant wait to go back again this December for New Years!
XD
icelandpictures:
242,724 Earthquakes and 7 eruptions in Iceland since 1996
Did you just notice Iceland when Eyjafjallajökull began erupting? Did we freshen up your memory with the Grímsvötn eruption (it’s officially over by the way)?
Well eruptions and earthquakes are not always internationally newsworthy, at least if no international air traffic is disturbed. The Icelandic firm Datamarket loves raw compiling data in a visually appealing way (check them out if your interested in that kind of thing). This video shows all eruptions and noteworthy earthquakes in the past 15 years. Eruptions are marked with an explosion like star and the earthquakes with circles. Light colored quakes are close to the surface, while deep ones are dark. The size of the circle corresponds with the energy of the quake.
