There's one thing I keep seeing, coming up in posts across social media when it comes to the way people are engaging with the Neil Gaiman news. And it's some semblance of the idea that "you can never trust a man who calls himself a feminist."
Trust me, I understand what (some) people are trying to say with this sentiment. I do.
Like a few too many high-profile men before him, and likely all sorts of a average joes we've never heard about, Neil Gaiman used stated leftist language and apparent politics to build a persona that completely clashed with reality. Whether he did this because it worked well for the author brand he was trying to create or because it softened up potential victims, or both, you and I may never know.
The point is that powerful men have done this, so it's important to analyze how people behave as much if not more than what they say. To educate yourself. And commit to staying educated as a continuous lifelong process! About how oppressive systems, including patriarchy, work in practice. So you can recognize the aspect of these systems you don't have personal firsthand experience with. In other people, in yourself, and in the world you live in.
And recognize too that there will always be people whose private lives or actions you aren't privy to. Who are simply excellent liars and manipulators. Accept that's just a part of life. Deal with it as it occurs, learn lessons from each situation, if you even can. And move forward.
But let's also take a moment, a quick breath, and ask ourselves who it really benefits when we imply that there are no actual feminist men in the entirety of planet earth.
Ask who it benefits to build a world where a man, who might be interested in learning more about the systemic oppression of women, gets labeled by both men and women as suspicious, before even trying. Does it benefit us as women, to create a world where the most unilaterally myopic "feminists" and the most openly dangerous men both agree:
There is no world where women can be safe. And no world in which men can & should be responsible for being a part of building that.
Truly, I understand what (some) people mean when they say to be careful of (some) men who label themselves feminists. The same way any marginalized group should be at least a little careful of anyone from the oppressor class designating themselves "ally" without a shred of humility or self-awareness: It can be a yellow flag for someone who wants to be treated like they're definitely a good person or on the "right side." Before ever providing proof that they really get what they're talking about, or have done the work.
But don't forget there is only one group of people who benefit from the wide-scale implication. That there is no, and can never be, a world where men can be held to a higher standard of understanding. Where men can't be remotely interested in building a just world for anyone unlike themselves. And in which men can't actually ever stop being abusers of women on a systemic scale.
Who benefits from believing those things to be true?
Only the people – misogynists! abusers! – who want to continue living in the kind of world we're living in right now. Where the idea of a man getting involved with feminism is automatically considered icky or cringy or suspicious. Where change can never happen, because men trying to be part of the systemic solution, or any solution, will never be trusted or normalized.
Again, to reiterate:
Who benefits from believing these things to be true?
Not women.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the women who came forward with the allegations against Neil Gaiman. Their stories (particularly those of Scarlett Pavlovich, Kendra Stout and Caroline) are utterly horrific, and their bravery and resilience in discussing the heinous things they suffered at the hands of Gaiman (and Amanda Palmer) cannot be overstated. I hope that all of these women live happy and successful lives going forward, and that no one suffers at the hands of this depraved predator ever again.
(And to any victims of his that have not come forward yet or who will never feel ready to come forward, your experiences are just as valid and your courage/perseverance is just as strong.)

I don't really believe in separating the art from the artist, but I remember how much it hurt when I found out Rowling was an absolutely shit person and so I do worry about the Gaiman fans out there who are in pain because of the article that was dropped today. I hope this helps.

Lila Shapiro does an amazing job at explaining Gaiman's family history with the church of scientology and how that fucked him up as a child, without ever implying that the trauma excuses his actions as a grown man. the entire article is masterfully written but that part really stuck out to me. she provides context so well but it never veers into a justification whatsoever. and that said, i also think we should pay attention to that part and talk about it. of course, primarily we should uphold the victims' voices and their experiences. but i also think we need to talk about scientology. something needs to be done about that goddamn cult. i knew about the financial blackmail and insane psychological abuse they do, but i had no idea prior to this that they punished children this way. it's fucking insane

This is one of the most horrific things I’ve ever read - TW for pretty much everything you can imagine (rape, sexual/physical/emotional abuse, CSA, incest, religious trauma, grooming, forced ingestion of bodily fluids, and so much more), but it’s incredibly important to spread this info. Neil Gaiman is a predator in every sense of the word and an absolutely despicable excuse of a human being (as is Amanda Palmer, his ex-wife)
Here is another link to the archived article if the other one has issues or gets taken down: https://archive.is/HJtxW
If the paywall comes up, try to put the link into this: https://www.removepaywall.com
Posting in the spirit of not staying quiet about this.
I strongly suggest you read this—all of it, because it’s long. Lila Shapiro is the journalist who wrote the investigation into Joss Whedon btw and won an award for it, so maybe people can finally stop making this all about Tortoise Media.
