It wasn't like they'd even been at the beach that long, but ever since Andy burst into her apartment that morning saying they needed to head for cover that Lyov was looking for them, the weight of what was happening around them. Gale was still in prison and getting closer to a conviction every day that Vic wasn't actively searching for the real culprit of the crime he'd been accused of. It was disheartening to say the least, to know that she along with Andy were the only two people challenging the mafia presence that had lurked in the sleepy town for so long. The whole drive up to the location that Andy had somehow set up with his partner Julian, Vic had been silent. She wasn't sure what to say, and in fact when Andy had come and told her the same man with the wild eyes was after them and they had to hid, she'd given merely a nod and went to pack a suitcase, throwing everything in as fast as she could.
But now she was laying in a bed that wasn't hers, clutching a pillow that wasn't hers, while her thoughts kept drifting back and forth between her brother in prison, and a home that wasn't safe anymore. And before she even knew what was happening there were silent tears falling off the tip of her nose. How had things even come this far?

Andy invading her personal space was not only surprising, it set a pool of fear to bubble in her stomach and she wanted to tell him not to go. She understood then what this meant--Andy going into the nest--he was prepping himself for death and Vic couldn't let that happen. She understood that Andy might not ever give her the signal, and instead of fight him on it, she steeled her hard expression back on her face as he pulled away and squeezed her hand. As soon as he left Vic's sight, she packed up the rest of everything and took off. She couldn't let Andy go in there without help--and help she would get.
But when Vic finally got back with said help and had managed to stake all the bastards and chop of their heads, she'd been so busy trying to save his life that she hadn't even saw what sort of condition he was in. His body looked crumpled and broken with bloodstains covering his clothes that were surely already setting though they were probably already ruined anyways. Something caught in her throat and it felt like her feet were glued to the floor, worried that he was actually already dead and in fact Vic had been too late to save him. But when a strangled groan left his lips it was like everything was in slow motion and Vic couldn't get around to the front of his body fast enough. She kneeled in front of him, her hand somehow finding his and she almost couldn't breathe through her desparate need for him to open his eyes. Though when he did, he looked at her like she was handing him the world and Vic wasn't sure she knew what to do. It wasn't until his hand pulled away from hers and touched her face that she even realized the hot tears that were sliding down her cheeks, and she hastily wiped at them.
"C'mon, Vega," she said, offering her hand out for him to steady himself on. "Let's get your dumb ass out of here."
As he could have predicted, Vic stubbornly refused at first follow his plan, which was one of the things he lo - could depend on her for. She didn’t back down from a fight, even if it was with him. This time, however, he wasn’t trying to get her to squabble with him with the end goal of making her face redden the way he found hilarious; he was trying to save her life. His voice unintentionally grew harsh to match her own stubborn tone as he replied to her. “Listen, Vic. I’m not fuckin’ around. We’re partners, but if we both end up dead what use are we gonna be to anyone else? You’re a better hunter and we both know it. You’re too valuable to lose.” The words held a double meaning, one that would likely remain hidden and go with Andy to the grave, but at least she would live on to be blissfully ignorant. He had turned to leave, to head in there and fight to the bitter end without discussing it further, with his final words being something of a praise, Vic acted out of character and tocuhed his arm. She rarely ever touched him during daylight hours, and the pressure of her hand on his arm was enough to make him turn in stunned surprise. The look on her face was even more surprising - her expression was softer than he’d ever seen, and for a moment he resented that he was only seeing it for the first time now. Her words hit him hard, knowing that was the closest to emotional that Vic would ever get. But he understood; it was her own way of being concerned, and emotional. She didn’t go about it the same way as most people, but she was sincere. He scoffed and tried to sound like his normally cocky self. “Please, baby, you think I go down that easy?” he joked, though his grin didn’t reach his eyes.
Knowing that this might be the last time he ever saw Vic, and that he might never get the chance again, Andy decided to at least partially acknowledged the way he felt for her. He stepped forward, intruding on Vic’s carefully maintained bubbled of space, and pressed a kiss to her forehead, letting his lips linger on her skin and resting his hands on her shoulders, allowing himself one last time to hold her. He’d never taken the risk of showing any sort of affection with her before because he knew he’d be crossing a line that he wasn’t even ready to face, but times were different. He’d never been any good at hiding things from Vic before, and he knew his feelings were all but blindingly obvious from the way he’d just acted. In his own way, he’d finally admitted how he felt, if only to himself. He took one of her hands in his own and squeezed it, before he let go and crept into the building. He kept one hand on his knife and treaded softly down the stairs and onto the ground floor, where the vamps were currently gathered in conversation. He’d manged to sneak closer and closer, until one wrong step made a creak in the floorboards and caught the attention of the nest, who all turned their heads and bared their teeth at him. “Well, fuck,” Andy said cheerfully, with the crazy-eyed grin of a man about to meet his end head-on. “Guess I crashed the party, huh?”

There were really only a handful of things that Vic hated and weddings were one of them. She hated getting the invites in the mail, she hated going through the motions to see if she could even go and she hated trying to remember the RSVP by dates. But this wasn't one she could get out of with a silly work excuse. It was her cousin's wedding and a cousin that her mother was particularly fond of since it was Vic's only cousin and her mother's only niece. She would be badgered into going. Though as it was nearly closer to the wedding Vic had said she was bringing a plus one and no one in her life seemed even remotely appealing to go to the wedding with. And if dating in northern California was hard, dating with a full time (time consuming) career was even more difficult and she hated dating for the most part anyways. So after an exchange of a few emails over the past couple of weeks, Vic had answered some guy named Connor's online ad for a date. She needed a date. And he was willing to be whatever she wanted him to be for the afternoon. So at eleven that morning Vic was pretty much ready to go since it was still a four hour drive down to Sacramento where the wedding was at, and she was just waiting for Connor to show up. She passed the time by idly straightening things up in her apartment until the door buzzed signaling she had a guest downstairs, so she grabbed her coat and purse, tossing her phone and keys inside as she slipped out and locked the door behind her. She took the elevator down to meet him in the front lobby.

"You must be Connor," she said, extending her hand for him to shake. "If you think about murdering me today, you should know that I always carry pepper spray and a taser, so think twice." She didn't mention that she also had a pocket knife in her purse, but she thought she ought to leave a little to imagination as she stepped towards the exit with her hand beckoning him to follow her. "It's my cousin's wedding and it's a bit of a long ride down there so it'll give us time to get the story straight."

"I don't want you to leave the seat up, that's the problem," she remarked pointedly, totally sure that Sinbad puked on Andy for a reason. "You brought the dog into it, you little shit," she laughed, walking past him towards the kitchen and leaving the dog by his food bowl. "He's not a demon."
"If you want me to leave the seat up, you could just ask politely," he said breezily, ignoring her statement that Sinbad’s vomit was his fault. "No need to bring the dog into it." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Totally a demon dog. He’s biding his time until he can reveal his true form.”

Her brows shot up as she shrugged, gripping her hand tighter around the stake she held down at her side. If it came to blows, Vic wanted to be prepared. "Just for you," she said cheekily.
When he stepped closed, she moved backwards, letting her feet tell her what the landscape immediately behind her was like, rather than looking. Vic normally hunted alone, but she wasn't stupid enough to say so, and if her heart hadn't already been beating in hyper speed because of the adrenaline, he might have a better chance and sniffing out her lie. "Yes," she said calmly.
"That’s disappointing", he answered easily, tilting his head, eyes traveling down her figure. "And you brought a stake with you? For me? That’s so nice of you, you shouldn’t have!"
Ludwig took a step closer to her, just one, he didn’t want to set her off or scare her away. Humans were such restless animals — there was so much screaming and running. He wasn’t a fan. “Should I expect others to come looking for you?”

"Maybe he did, but you shouldn't have left the seat up. I warned you when you first started staying the night here," she said, scratching Sinbad's ears even though he barked. "Totally not a demon dog, you're just exaggerating."
Andy eyed the dog in question warily as Vic brought up the very event that first made them rivals. “I think he threw up on me on purpose. It was a challenge,” he insisted. “Sinbad is a demon dog.” As if on cue, the pug barked. “See!” Andy exclaimed. “He knows.”

She frowned, reaching down to scoop up her dog. "You can't blame this on him, he can't get into the toilet bowl if you put the seat back down. And besides, second time is two times to many. The first time Sinbad threw up on you because you left the toilet seat up."
Andy jumped when he heard Vic’s angry voice. That stuff was in nightmares, honestly. “Whoa whoa whoa, it’s not my fault that you never trained your dog not to drink out of the toilet,” he replied, hands raised defensively. “Besides, it’s only the second time. No need to pull out the full name.”

"Andres Vega Martinez I swear to God, if you leave the toilet seat up again and let Sinbad drink of the toilet I'm going to strangle you and then let you clean it up when he gets sick."

Action/Reaction // Andy & Vic
andyvegaau:
The piece of plastic was so small and insignificant at first glance that Andy nearly missed it altogether when he walked into the bathroom. He’d found a lead on his case, and he was going to scope out the location his subject had last been seen, but he never felt quite prepared for anything without brushing his teeth first. So he reached for the red toothbrush that sat underneath his medicine cabinet, and as he squirted some of Vic’s toothpaste on his brush (he needed to go buy more, but he always forgot and used hers instead), he glanced across the counter and there it was. In all of its plastic, heart-stopping glory.
He had to know. He couldn’t just walk out of the room and pretend he hadn’t seen it and then put it out of his mind. If he didn’t look, he knew most likely he’d end up overthinking it the rest of the night and it would screw up his actual work. It was for the good of the case, he argued, that he needed to see what it said.
Logically, there was a fifty percent it was going to say yes, but it didn’t stop Andy’s jaw dropping in shock as he took in the very much visible pink plus sign on the stick. He should put it back, call Vic, something, but he was rooted to the spot and somehow couldn’t move a single limb from the position he was currently in. He was still in the same place, the same expression on his face when Vic returned home and walked in to see him holding up the proof that she was pregnant. He looked up and their eyes locked, and he suddenly felt dizzy, and very, very faint.
Vic hadn’t thought anything about leaving the pregnancy test on the counter in the bathroom. She should have though. She knew Andy was working on a case and that leaving it out while she went to check the mail was risky. She’d felt off for a couple of weeks now and couldn’t even begin to explain it. She thought that she might just be getting sick, but then when she went to use the restroom, a box of tampons in the corner caught her eye and she pondered when the last time she menstruated was. It was like her whole heart dropped into her stomach when she thought about it.
They always say you know even before you pee on that little stick. That before Vic even thought about when her last cycle was or how late she was that her body already knew—and by extension, so did she. She wasn’t sure how true that was though because nothing in any handbook she’d ever considered reading would help prepare her for that moment when the hormones in her body caused the little pink plus sign come up. It probably also did help that she was really good at avoiding topics.
But also really bad because when she came back, Andy was staring at her little pee stick that had suck an intense meaning. “Andy,” she started, not sure if she should say I’m sorry or be happy that they’re expecting. She didn’t know how he felt, but she was terrified. How was she supposed to raise a tiny human being? She couldn’t even remember to feed herself most days, how could she remember for a whole other person? “I should have said something,” she said, settling on a safe bet right between saying sorry and yelling out congratulations. She wondered if they could really do it. If they could raise a kid.

She wasn't sure what sort of game he was trying to play, but surely if he though she was a threat to his nest he'd be at her throat already? He had to have seen her stake so she really didn't know what he was waiting around for. "I'm not here to indulge you," she said, standing up but keeping her eyes on him. Vamps were tricky and averting your eyes even for one second could mean death. "I'm not here for trouble, from what I've gathered you and the like have been making trouble. I've just come to clean up your mess." It was probably stupid having a conversation with the dude, especially since the rest of his friends could approach at any moment, but what else was she supposed to do? Run?
"Well, this is awkward." His words broke her attention and he watched with an amused face as she palmed at the tall grass. Ludwig had been following her for the past few minutes while she snuck around their nest — but he had grown bored of it. “‘Come on, you won’t even give it a try? What a bore. I should’ve gone out with the others. Are you looking for trouble, ma’am? You won’t find it here — if you are lucky."

Vic had been watching the nest she'd found on and off for a couple of days, trying to judge how many vamps were inside and if she could take them on her own. So far she'd only seen about four or so that regularly came in and out, but that didn't mean anything. There was always the possibility that there could be more or that they could know Vic was coming before she realized they knew. It was a tricky situation stumbling upon a bunch of vamps, and most of the last few days she'd spent trying to decide how to approach the situation. That was until she heard a voice beside her and fell over into the tall grass she was using as cover, fumbling for her stake. "I can't really play this off, can I?"
