"...the study method, completely different from in Italy. Here there is much less focus on long, drawn out lectures full of theory and equations, and more attention to practical, hands on learning. This teaching method is absolutely perfect from my point of view!" - Giuliano
Tumblr media
Name: Giuliano Nationality: Italian Course: Master in Engineering - Robot Systems Age: 24 Previous University: University of Bologna - Why did you choose to study in Denmark? The idea of studying in a Scandinavian country has always fascinated me. I was intrigued by this large region so famous all over the world. I wanted to experience a new culture, a new people, and new habits. After a thorough search I found the right course for me here in Denmark. - Why the University of Southern Denmark? Obviously the second step after choosing the country is the choice of the university and it is not always so simple. Luckily I had very specific ideas on my undergraduate degree so this allowed me to focus. I found that SDU offered the course for me and so I checked the credibility of the university on the internet and by asking friends who have been here. All sources indicated that SDU is really a good university. - How are the teachers/lectures? The study environment? If I said that SDU is a good university I’d be lying. It is a great university! There are many international students and that’s great. But what is most striking is the study method, completely different from in Italy. Here there is much less focus on long, drawn out lectures full of theory and equations, and more attention to practical, hands on learning. This teaching method is absolutely perfect from my point of view! - What is it like to be an international student in a foreign country? Well after a lot of praise for this country it's time for some negative points, albeit minimal. Being an international student in Denmark is a remarkable experience. However I get the feeling that we are not on par with the Danish students. Especially when it comes to finding a job. Although everyone can speak perfect English here, being able to speak Danish is necessary for finding any kind of work. Even work such as office cleaning where I don’t think Danish would be important. - What do you like to do when you're not in class or college? The city is not huge and the entertainment possibilities are not many, but the students are; this leads to an infinite amount of parties, dinners, disco and gatherings. Dinner with friends and a little beer is always good after a day of college! - What do you gain from studying abroad? The thing that struck me most was finding so many different cultures from all over the world. I also learned that the best way to unite different peoples and culture is to go out for a beer, we should inform our politicians! - How are the Danes? On time all the time! The Danish people are very different from Italians and not just on time keeping skills! The Danes are not as open so it is almost impossible to be "friends at first sight" but once barriers are crossed they are wonderful people. - How do you define Denmark in 3 words? Pretty girls everywhere! - What has surprised you most about studying / living in Denmark? I repeat myself but it is an important point I think. The university is really good, the lessons do NOT consist of blackboard, chalk and teachers too tired to properly answer your questions. We learn by practical hands on work with all modern media to assist us and the professors are always available and ready to help without hesitation. "Studying abroad helps me to gain a different perspective. Before coming to Denmark I never imagined I could have an equal relationship with the professor." - Elena
Tumblr media
Name: Elena Nationality: Italian Course: Marketing, Globalization and Culture Age: 23 Previous University: University of Verona - Why did you choose to study in Denmark? I was here 2 years ago through Erasmus and I wanted to come back. The education system here is very different from back home. - Why the University of Southern Denmark? I wanted to go abroad for my Master and SDU was known to me. I appreciate the variety of courses offered and the clarity and transparency of the registration process. - How is the study environment? The university is very international. The main campus is in Odense, the 3rd largest city in Denmark so there is much infrastructure, but also a lot of beautiful parks and countryside. - What is it like to be an international student in a foreign country? At SDU you never feel alone! You have many opportunities to meet people from all over the world and get to know different cultures. - What do you like to do when you're not in class or college? I really like cooking so I invite friends for dinner or for a coffee or to experience Danish cuisine and hope it is successful! During the weekend there is always something interesting to do to such as watch movies in their original language, go out for a beer or take a stroll in one of the many parks in the city. - What do you gain from studying abroad? Studying abroad helps me to gain a different perspective. Before coming to Denmark I never imagined I could have an equal relationship with the professor. At SDU teachers and students are on the same level. Getting used to this is good preparation for when I find work after my studies. - What are the Danes like in your opinion? Some say they are a bit stiff, others say they are very friendly. I do not want to generalise, but personally I think they are always ready to help, while respecting the privacy of others. - How do you define Denmark in 3 words? Bicycle, Computer, Hygge - What has surprised you most about studying / living in Denmark? Every day is different and full of small and big challenges that give you the opportunity to discover aspects of yourself that you did not know. "Danes are, according to a Swedish girl I know, the Italians of Scandinavia. They are more natural, they know how to make you laugh, they are able to tell jokes, and out-going." - Lorenzo
Tumblr media
Name: Lorenzo Nationality: Italian Study Programme: MSc in Economics –Finance and Economics Previous University: Università di Roma Tor Vergata Why did you choose Denmark? I always felt attracted to Scandinavian countries. I did my Erasmus in Oslo and I was pleasantly surprised by the Norwegian life style and how for them culture is European but also something else, something that is hard to define and explain. I have to say that Denmark is more European that its Scandinavian “sisters”: Norway and Sweden. It’s informal and modern culture echoes in its teaching method, that I personally find very educational; for example, no teacher will give you the results of the exercise, it is up to you. Why did you choose SDU? SDU is a partner University of my former University, Università Tor Vergata, and it was one of the first choices for Erasmus. Furthermore, I was told that in Denmark education is completely free, and the level of Education is set at very high standards. I was given the opportunity to send an application to a very good university in an unknown place (I come from Rome, and Odense is a city of approximately 200.000 inhabitants). Pointless to say that I made the right choice) How are the teachers/lectures? The study environment? How I previously stated, here everything is very informal. You can call professors by name from the beginning. Once one of my Danish colleague called the professor on the phone to ask him one thing related to class, if this had happened in Italy they would have called DIGOS immediately( DIGOS is the General Investigations and Special Operations Division ). No one here is your Nanny, professors tell you: “for next time you have to do this” and if they didn’t explain it well then you’ll have to study it on your own, you have to face the problem and you might even think “Now I’ll be on this exercise until I don’t get how to do it, even if I have no idea where to start”. Regarding students it is best to define 2 groups: Danish and internationals. The first group are the majority of my classmates but even the Internationals are quite a lot: in some courses there are more internationals than Danish. You will not have any problem to get acquainted with the Internationals. I do have to warn you that it is a little bit harder with Danish. Not all, it’s never nice to generalize, some you become friends from the beginning, but there are some others to whom you talk every day in class and after 2 months they don’t even say hi. What is it like to be an international student in a foreign country? Well, technically even if I am not an Erasmus I could simply decide not to do anything and enjoy Erasmus life, it’s quite awesome! I have higher responsibilities in comparison to any Erasmus student that fills its days with trips, alcohol and other leisure activities. It is ironic how you can be a perfect student during the week and then enjoy a lot your weekend more than an Erasmus in Alicante, Spain. Regarding ordinary days (going to the supermarket, going to the bank, going to the doctor for a medical prescription etc) everyone – an I do mean everyone – speaks perfect English. This is a great thing and gives you a lot of serenity. You do realize that whatever problem you have you will be able to ask for help and eventually solve it. What do you like to do as an SDU student when you are not in class? With all the amazing temperatures that there are in winter, most of the activities are indoor. I also live in a house with 16 other students, from all over the world; let’s say that the Italian cooking ability – or other countries inability to put themselves to cook anything make us look like master chefs even if we are just normal – is well used. I fill in my days with Cooking, reading and playing the guitar. I am also one of the volunteers of the Model United Nations of SDU, we went to Belgrade for a conference. At the end I am able to fill in my days. What do you gain from studying abroad? What skills/experiences do you get to take home with you? Personally, a lot of self-examination. I know that my friends will make fun of me, but since I have moved in such a different place from back home I do realize some aspects and behaviors that I give for granted in Italy, and that instead should be revisited. Like the general opinion that Italian society has towards women, or even homosexuals, or simply of the “different”, things that do influence your opinion, directly but indirectly too. I do think Italian society is very xenophobe. Danish society is not perfect, but they fear that the foreigner might destroy their efficient mechanism that they created in centuries of social-democrat evolution. And in a certain way it is a legit fear, since things here work almost perfectly, starting from their welfare. What are the Danes like in your opinion? Danes are, according to a Swedish girl I know, the Italians of Scandinavia. They are more natural, they know how to make you laugh, they are able to tell jokes, and out-going. The problem is that none of the above is true if you were born in latitude where winter lasts only 3 months. I do have to say that Danish are enjoyable. Their humor is strange, one of a kind: it’s a mixture of Monthy Piton and your neighborhood mechanic. Weird. Girls are amazing, but very different from Italian girls. What characterizes Denmark in 3 words? Blonds, Bicycle and Beer. What surprised you the most about studying in Denmark/living in Denmark? Being an Erasmus in Oslo, most of these experiences I already felt them on my skin. What surprised and keeps surprising me is the percentage of students that go abroad. And not in Germany or in Spain but in the USA, Australia. There are lots of outgoing students and for very far destinations. I met people that now live in the USA, Australia or people that are interested in going for an internship to the Emirates or Bangladesh. Everyone thinks outside the box, and this is how it should be, the world is getting too small. "...free education and high quality of life make Denmark very attractive compared to other countries. Denmark is a very popular destination for students from all over the world and offers opportunities for everyone." - Andrea
Tumblr media
Name: Andrea Nationality: Italian Course: Business Administration - Erasmus Age: 23 years Previous University: University of Pavia - Why did you choose to study in Denmark? I wanted to complete my higher education in the Nordic countries, where English is a second language, and where the state provides students with opportunities and adequate services. Denmark has always inspired me and when I had to choose between here and the goals proposed by my university, I had no doubts. - Why the University of Southern Denmark? I chose SDU for its courses, the city and because I was recommended by my university professors and students from home. - How are the teachers/lectures? The study environment? The environment is certainly positive. Students participate actively in the lessons and the teachers are always trying to stimulate dialogue (e.g. through discussion of "case studies"). Working in groups is very common and this gives students the opportunity to work together and challenge each other. While the assessments are always individual so it is not possible to let your grades be affected by other students. The university is equiped with modern faculties and up to date technologies. The spacious classrooms provide a high level of comfort and the common areas provide space to relax between classes. In general I think that SDU is a suitable environment to both study in peace and socialise. - What is it like to be an international student in a foreign country? The high quality of services offered, free education and high quality of life make Denmark very attractive compared to other countries. Denmark is a very popular destination for students from all over the world and offers opportunities for everyone. Here international students are seen as valuable resources for the country and as such are treated the same as local citizens. Danish people are very open and accepting of foreigners in their country. Of course, good manners and respect for others is a must. - What do you like to do when you're not in class or college? I go out with friends and explore the city in search of new places to know, and ... pedal ... so much! Cycling is a part of everyday life! With the arrival of spring we have some trips outside the city. Denmark is a beautiful country and there are many things I would love to see and places I want to visit. - What do you gain from studying abroad? I'm expanding my knowledge every day. I'm experiencing living in a new country and this helps me see what is good and bad not just of Denmark and Italy, but of the home countries of my peers. - How are the Danes? Unfortunately I have to say that I have not yet had the opportunity to meet many, and none in depth. Many tend to be very reserved at first, but from the little I’ve seen they seem to be very helpful and kind.
