to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

like dgmw, ella's love for char is a big part of what helps her find the strength to break her curse in the book, but it's also her own sheer determination to no longer be a pawn for her step-family that finally pushes her to the point of making it happen. her step-mother and step-sisters are trying to force her to agree to marry prince char so they can use him through her, and refusing to let them make her into a tool of manipulation against someone she loves is what ultimately inspires ella to fight the curse hard enough that it breaks.

something to be said for how even though ella's mother was trying to protect her, she still used ella's curse against her when she ordered her never to tell anyone about it. like yes, lady eleanor only wanted to ensure no one could ever knowingly use lucinda's gift against ella, but in the process she takes away ella's ability to decide if and when to divulge possibly essential information about herself to someone else.

Here’s a hot take literally no one asked for but:

I just rewatched Ella Enchanted (for those unfamiliar, the protagonist is cursed by her godmother to obey any command given to her). And the thing that struck me in this rewatch is that Ella’s mom kinda sucks?

Like she knows her kid is cursed in a way that circumvents her free will but SHE STILL MAKES ELLA DO SHIT?? One of the examples was her carelessly using hyperbole and embarrassing Ella who literally stuffed her face with birthday cake. Alright, willing to give that a pass because it was an accident.

But another example is making Ella go practice mandolin against her will. Ella tries to exhibit some of the only defiance left and at least go slowly to her task but her mom makes her hurry up. Now of course it didn’t physically hurt Ella to go practice but the idea that her mom knows she can’t disobey and uses that against her? Super shitty parenting, 0/10.

I know it would circumvent the plot but a caring mother would at least have said “don’t obey anyone but me” as there isn’t a timer on how long indefinite commands last, and then she could just not use the curse. Barring a complete rewrite though she could at least have been the one person in Ella’s life that didn’t command her.

She doesn’t even tell Ella about the curse until she’s older, so this poor kid was just running around confused as hell. Then on her deathbed she commands Ella not to tell anyone. She says it’s for her own safety but like, way to not trust her judgement or give her autonomy to defend herself. Her dad doesn’t even know about it which might have helped him protect her from shitty people who would have used it against her?? (But also shitty dad not to at least be like hmm my daughter does everything I say no matter how absurd)

That’s it, I don’t have a snappy ending. Ella’s mom sucked.

“No.” I hadn’t anticipated this. I changed the subject. ��I’ll race you to the gate.” 

“All right, but I command you to lose the race.” 

“Then I don’t want to race.” 

“I command you to race, and I command you to lose.” 

We raced. I lost. 

We picked berries. I had to give Pamela the sweetest, ripest ones. We played princesses and ogres. I had to be the ogre. 

An hour after my admission, I punched her. She screamed, and blood poured from her nose. 

Our friendship ended that day. Mother found Pamela’s mother a new situation far from our town of Frell. 

After punishing me for using my fist, Mother issued one of her infrequent commands: never to tell anyone about my curse. But I wouldn’t have anyway. I had learned caution.

So as the streams wrapping up I'm reviewing my notes on what's happened and what's been said, in this stream dream has:

-Misgendered aimsey, when told their pronouns he pretended to be confused on what their pronouns are and then started calling them by their name to avoid gendering them correctly -called tubbo tommy 6 times -started yelling when tubbo wouldnt let him move on from the sexism claims and then called tubbo emotional for yelling later on -said this company uses child labor with no evidence, because its a chinese company -"I dont understand why id have to provide evidence when accusing tom of a crime" -"I cant prove anything because my sources want to be anonymous but im not gonna talk about the non anonymous people messaging you telling you im wrong" -Said that viewing tommys mom as a separate person was a mistake and thats why he dmed her -said he wants tommy to delete the vids of him hanging out w dreams family bc he doesnt want ppl to think he supports tommy anymore -Denied being gay, pretended not to know what the definition of "queer community" is so he could avoid saying hes straight -Tried to pass the queerbaiting blame onto george
