62. Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea // Fall Out Boy
Does this have anything to do with the song?? Probably not, I’m just free associating here. Thanks for letting me draw my boys!!

Anyway the ending of HSM3 is a twist bc the main protagonist doesn't get the prestigious macguffin (scholarship to julliard) but instead gets to go to a college of HIS choice ("not you or Chad or anybuddy else") bc it's a movie about pursuing the secret third thing (self determination) while being pressured to fit into a false dichotomy

Anyway we've been watching Christmas-themed made-for-TV rom-coms regularly for about a year and a half, and have gotten p good at watching for the beats in the 3-act structure. Going into HSM2, with Troy's heavy-handed "we're all in this together" attitude re: summer job @ Lava Springs, I started saying, "ok, midpoint is 'i ordered swiss'" bc that's when he first obviously acts on his coachdad's ill-informed advice and let me tell you what according to Diney+ it's @ 57:50 with 57:55 left in the run timeeeeee

Ok so the basketball championship and the scholastic decathlon are competitions. They are team activities whose teams depend on their respective superstars (Troy and Gabriella) in order to win -- and winning is the explicit goal, the reason for dedicating one's time, energy, and focus to the extracurricular activity. External validation that you've done a good enough job -- did a better job than someone else -- justifies the pursuit.
While the callbacks for Twinkle Towne are also a competition, with the prize being the opportunity to perform for a bigger audience (and thus does include an aspect of public attention (which can be argued as implying pursuit of external validation)), there just aren't the same inter-school/public stakes. Because no one in this culture cares about performing arts at all, instead of having the reputation of your school on your shoulders, you're auditioning for yourself.
Sharpay's an excellent role model for this self-focus, for pursuing the activity because you're internally motivated rather than because someone else benefits from your involvement and dedication. Troy and Gabriella ultimately display this culture-defying motivation by being up there on stage, not to earn their place in the winter musicale, but just because they want to be up there. Likewise, they end up winning their respective, culturally-approved competitions not dispute this split focus, but because they brought the passion of being internal motivated; celebrating and capitalizing on the intrinsic value of participating in the activity not because they'll be external validated for good performance, but actually despite all that, for the fun of it.

So I have found Shining Moments and tbh I'm not sure how I missed it since it's literally the first result when you search on archive. I still can't find Lights, Camera, Action and would still love to get my hands on it if you've got it!
a call to arms for the high school musical fandom
(or, you know)
I've made a list on archive.org of all the hsm literature I could find - this includes the junior novels, stories from east high and some other random literature, year books, quiz books and the like
however
there are two books i cannot find on there which exists according to wikipedia
Lights, Camera, Action by N.B. Grace and Shining Moments by Helen Perelman
if you happen to own these or your local library has them, i would be greatly appreciative to hear from you. if you know of any other important hsm literature that belongs on the list, please let me know!

This book said Troy/Zeke rights
Having sudden very domestic fluffy Christmas-y Zeke/Troy feelings (idk why), let's roll with it:
Zeke bakes for Christmas. Like, a lot. Like, he is a baker who works at a bakery and bakes all day and then he comes home and bakes more? Something is wrong with this man. There are, like, at least 7 different kinds of cookies and those are just the baked ones. There's so much other stuff, candy, chocolate, if you can make it by hand, Zeke will make it.
Troy really likes Christmas. Troy really likes doing things for other people. Troy is really easily stressed out. You see the problem here? If not reminded, he will forget to take care of himself and he absolutely will forget eating. Zeke is very good at reminding him and cooks and bakes for him, especially around Christmas.
They decorate cookies together. Zeke does it very neatly and professionally and incredibly pretty. Troy writes dick on at least one. There's a lot of chocolate everywhere.
Troy, uh, helps, sometimes. Troy is bad at cooking. Zeke doesn't know why he lets him help. It would be good if Troy had at least the most basic of cooking skills but is it worth it? Is this disaster really worth it??? Probably not, Zeke might just have to cook for him forever.
