if Gabriella had gone to look for Troy when he didn't show up to their date in HSM2 and she stumbled on Humuhumunukunawhatits what do you think her reaction would be? slowly close the door and pretend she saw nothing? die of laughter? come up with a rescue plan for Troy? wait till it's finished and tell Sharpay that is not actual Hawaiian?
I like to think she would have enjoyed seeing Troy squirm, though she might have had to rescue him at some point. This is hilarious and I've never thought about it before lmao

I don't think Taylor and Sharpay ever even spoke in the movies and it's probably because together they would be too powerful. Anyway, in one of the books Taylor and Sharpay have to plan a fair-thing together and they have very different workflows and ideas and get very angry at each other and there's just a lot of tension and them realising maybe the other isn't so bad.
There are also several instances of Troy being just incredibly amazed at Zeke's baking, including Troy saying he is Zeke's number one fan and that if Zeke bakes him something, he would be his valentine.
Now obviously these books are INCREDIBLY family-friendly, they barely even say the words boyfriend and girlfriend about Troy and Gabriella (I don't think they ever even kiss?), so clearly this is all very wholesome and lighthearted friendship. But also not difficult to read as gay and that was just way more fun.
(and Zeke goes to Cornell for college, and Martha goes to USC. Are those good, I'm not American, I don't know. Jason "hasn't decided" according to the yearbook I got this information from.)
can't agree that the books are not great and unfruitful. plus the wikis all state Troy's mum's name is Lucille but Mrs Montez is apparently named Lisa. plus the books have Chad wanting to work in hip hop, Sharpay apparently dated the previous basketball captain which...explains so much and a movie called murder by mozzarella.
Oh, don't get me wrong! They're fun books and have lots of fun little details! I still want to read them all at some point! (I got halfway through the one that you (?) recommended on AO3 and then got sidetracked and never finished it.
I just know that they were written by various authors that probably didn't work with the movie writers/directors/etc, so the movies weren't necessarily created with the book details in mind. I hope that makes sense?
I really don't trust the wikis on the names. Anyone can edit those. Someone may have added the names because of a personal headcanon, or maybe they saw them floating around on the internet and assumed they were correct. And of course, then all the wikis just reference each other with no actual source. (If they cited a source, that'd be different.) That's why I was curious if they came from the books - I know they're not stated anywhere in the movies. (Also, I know the wiki says Lisa for Gabriella's mom, but I swear I see Maria more in fanfics lol)

It's funny you got this ask when I made the post. You already said pretty much what I think as well, but I just wanna add that when I called my search unfruitful I meant that I didn't find the things I were looking for, e.g. birthdays and names (Gabriella's mom's birthday is actually mentioned in one of them but I cannot for the love of it figure out when that book happens.) The books do have a lot of fun little details! Chad wanting to somehow work in hip-hop, where everybody goes to college, favourite movies, interactions between characters who don't talk in the movies (Sharpay and Taylor enemies to lovers arc) etc. They are just very thrown in for fun and doesn't necessarily fit into a larger scheme (I refuse to believe that Chad wants to do anything other than play basketball, he is BLIND to every other career choice at least until well into college).
I will stick to saying the books aren't great. They are just very simply not great literature, not even for kids, but they're okay. They in no way live up to how genuinely good HSM is

Each book took maybe less than an hour to read, they were super quick, to the point where I read through 4 of them in one day. I pretty quickly figured I wouldn't get any answers I was looking for in them, but I stuck through it (I'm not sure reading all of them was worth it)
After talking with @awesomeassfuck and @generalwildcat a while back about where the fuck do the names Lucille and Maria for Troy and Gabriella's moms come from and why are they just considered canon, I decided to read all the HSM books I could get my hands on.
It's uh
They probably shouldn't be considered canon, tbh
They are written by a variety of authors and don't always line up. My main goal was to find information on parents or birthdays or similar and there wasn't really a lot. I mostly found random trivia like favourite movies and who can dunk. The very limited information I did find was:
- Zeke has a brother who plays the bass
- Jason has both a younger brother and younger sister
- Chad's mom is a lawyer
- Troy and Gabriella are both 16 in Battle of the Bands, making them both 16 (or younger) in the first movie. This book was published before the 2nd movie came out, so it probably should be happening sometime in the spring of junior year, but also the choir is practicing holiday songs? Troy is 17 in Crunch Time which explicitly happens at Halloween senior year -> this puts Troy's birthday probably in the summer
All in all, not a very fruitful search, really. The books are... Not great, but they are written for 10 year olds and some are definitely better than others

thank you for doing the work in this!!!
i always assumed the montage was happening over several days but you're very right that it doesn't make a lot of sense with everybody's clothing? i think maybe just nobody thought too hard about it when making the movie
HSM1 Timeline
Based on my earlier post trying to figure out which scenes take place which day, I've come up with two quite similar timelines for movie. Both involve overlooking a couple minor outfit changes, and one involves interpreting a line of dialogue a bit creatively. I think both are plausible enough, though.
Both timelines are the same toward the beginning and toward the end, so I'll just point out where they differ. It's essentially the last half of Thursday to midday Tuesday that shifts one way or the other.
I tend to be really wordy and overexplain things to the point of confusion lol, so I included graphics to follow along with for my two proposed timelines. Please ask questions if something doesn't make sense or if I missed something super obvious.
Option 1 (my preference):
Tumblr media
Option 2:
Tumblr media
I tried to include timestamps, then promptly forgot, so there here and there throughout. I can edit them in if anyone wants, but if you know the movie pretty well, you probably don't need them.
The first 23 minutes (not counting the ski lodge) are definitely all on the first Monday back from winter break based on everyone's clothes. This includes homeroom, Getcha Head in the Game, detention, basketball practice, and Gabriella and Taylor talking after school. This does mean that Getcha Head in the Game and the later basketball practice are all the same day, but I think that's explained by saying the song takes place during an informal practice at lunch time or something. The following scene of Troy and Coach playing basketball in the backyard is also probably the same day - there's technically a clothing change, but it makes sense that they would change before playing.
The auditions are Tuesday, along with all related scenes (until the 38 minute mark). Sharpay and Ryan change outfits, but that makes sense - they're dressing up for the audition.
Sharpay finding out about the callbacks is Wednesday morning. This also includes the Stick to the Status Quo number, Darbus in the locker room, and the rooftop scene.
After that, it gets kind of dicey because it's a montage. If you follow the montage chronologically, I think it has to cover at least three days because Troy's shirt switches multiple times. However, it's only two shirts? He goes from the blue vertical striped shirt, to a plain blue shirt, back to the vertical striped shirt. Kelsi wears two outfits during the montage, while Gabriella only wears one. So if we assume these scenes within the montage are in chronological order, to me that means it’s at least four school days, putting us at the following Tuesday, which blows the whole timeline out of the water.
But let’s be generous and assume the shirt changing is a continuity error, and that the whole montage and the scene in the gym with Coach Bolton (since Gabriella’s wearing the same shirt) all take place over just one day. That means all that takes place Thursday, week 1.
Now here's where the timelines differ.
The next couple of scenes are Troy and Chad in the library and Taylor and Chad plotting to separate Troy and Gabriella (around 55 to 57 minutes into the movie). These two scenes take place the same day as each other since Chad's wearing the same shirt in both scenes. Troy's in a different outfit than he was during the montage on Thursday, which suggests it's the next day (Friday).
However, there's a line of dialogue during their scheming in which Chad and Taylor agree that they'll start their plan **tomorrow** - this is where it kind of branches and you can choose how to interpret things. If by "we start tomorrow," we take it to mean all the webcam stuff happens the following day, then the library and scheming scenes can't take place on Friday (since "tomorrow" would be the weekend and no one would be at school). If that's the case, we could say it's still Thursday and Troy changed after practice, hence the outfit swap. (This also implies they're all at the school really late for some reason, but I think it's plausible enough with the fact that Taylor's in chem club, Chad's on the basketball team, and Sharpay and Ryan are in drama club.)
Or we could say the library scene and the scheming took place on Friday, and choose to interpret the "we start tomorrow" as in, for example, they're going to buy the webcam tomorrow, do further coordination tomorrow, etc. This type of stuff could take place over a weekend, so the scheming scene could be Friday. This makes more sense with Troy's outfit change, but personally I think it's a generous way to interpret the meaning of the "tomorrow" line.
The whole webcam stuff is the next school day, whether that's Friday or Monday. Chad changes clothes over the course of carrying out their plan, but no one else does, so I feel like that's written off as him trying to be in East High colors for the locker room scene to match everyone else.
The quick shot of Troy and the basketball team outside, where he pushes them aside to run laps, and the shots of him and Gabriella in their respective backyards can be anytime after school that day, and during the weekend if we choose to say the webcam scene was Friday.
Gabriella ignoring him in the cafeteria is the next school day, either Monday or Tuesday. This is the same day that Chad and Taylor come clean to Troy and Gabriella, respectively.
After this, the timelines realign. Troy visiting Gabriella at her house can't be any later than Tuesday, whether that's the same day as Taylor and Chad come clean or the following day, because otherwise the rest of the timeline is completely illogical (and everything's a little questionable already.) They're in different clothes than they were in the cafeteria, but maybe they both changed after school if all of this took place Tuesday.
The following scenes, starting with a quick shot of basketball practice (around the 1:12:30 mark - sorry, completely forgot to include timestamps almost immediately) and going until Sharpay and Ryan convince Darbus to change the callback time are all Wednesday. It's all extracurriculars (basketball practice, chem club/decathlon practice, rehearsing with Kelsi, and drama club), so it's all most likely after school.
The only scene on Thursday, week 2 is when Troy/Gab/Chad/etc. find out the callback day is moved from Thursday to Friday. This means they found out the day of, so they had originally been planning to do the callbacks the same day they find out they were moved.
Everything else takes place Friday. Easy enough.
So, ahem, in conclusion, the timeline in HSM1 is tight and a tad bit questionable, but I think it's close enough that if you squint, it works. The biggest pitfall is Thursday, week 1, which crammed a whole lot into one day and had some questionable outfit changes that I had to ignore in order to make the rest of the timeline work.
Thoughts? Feedback? Did I miss something super obvious? (I already did that once and missed a whole day, so I wouldn't put it past myself.) Or do you have another timeline to propose? Please let me know your thoughts!!

by now we’re all aware of the subtext of high school musical 2’s “i don’t dance,” with the most weighty supporting evidence including the inexplicable later clothing swap between chad and ryan and the sung line “i’ll show you how i swing.” often unaddressed is troy bolton’s declaration in “bet on it,” while he is actively undergoing relationship problems with gabriella, where he sings that he’s “gonna work on [his] swing” and he’s “gotta do [his] own thing.” the latter line seems to be a reference to gabriella earlier singing that she’s “gotta go [her] own way” in breaking up with troy, but troy is singing to himself when he sings a similar line, and the pairing of that line with a reference to chad and ryan’s infamous “i don’t dance” lyric raises some questions. in this essay i will
