The "Vulcan mind meld" was a telepathic link between two individuals, allowing for an exchange of thoughts that would connect the two, to become one mind.

It is fascinating to follow the recent development of brain-computer interfaces but using it as a bidirectional computer-brain communication allows the creation to form a brain-brain communication system. Perhaps the evolution of civilization is when we can provide the natural means to exchange information and understanding.

Improving Opinion Into Knowledge I collect speeches for the same reason I go to the library or read Walt Whitman's poems over and over again. They are reference points to me in the history of human kind where we made the heavy effort to think new, learn and make the bold choice to share gained knowledge. All in order to create what I believe is the common wealth of imagination. 

There is a legend of when John F. Kennedy, before his above "We choose to go to the moon" speech managed to get all naysayers to think it could be possible. Not very surprising all scientists and engineers said it was absolutely impossible. JFK amused the smartest and the best from all over to world to brainstorm and humor him, by making lists of everything that could be possible. By deleting the disbelief and through play, they broke down an audacious goal into action and a blueprint was made to soon go with a budget. 

Later in his famous speech at the Rice Stadium on September 12, 1962, JFK said:

"We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

And with all fears of change and the impossible, we are mostly afraid of ourselves. This is when the fear of failure is so strong that we convince ourselves that it is impossible to succeed and then guarantee failure by not even trying, causing brain freeze. But if we have learned anything it is that once we are on the quest to learn more and believe that it is possible, there is really no stopping us. If we don't do it, someone else will. 

"We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man"

One of my favorite clips from the Pawnbroker (1964) at first because I also believe science indeed is born from art and wish to converse with this man about it. How can you not want to engage in a conversation based on that? Bright men and women who read and explore all get hungry for talk. But the assumption that others are brighter than you simply due to their appearance or wealth can break the brightest of us.

Voyager 1 is the first manmade object to have reached interstellar space. In addition to all of its tools to collect information about our solar system and beyond, it also bears a golden record filled with information about life on Earth and contains this letter from then-U.S president Jimmy Carter.  A great addition, a RadioLab podcast with Ann Druyan, widow of Carl Sagan and their story about the Voyager expedition.

Visualise The Brain In Real-Time

Who does not want to watch their own brain in action as they are thinking? Why? I don't know, but I believe it is because it is insanely cool and it may be very similar to the "Overview Effect" in the sense that it can be a therapeutic application in many ways. Perhaps for Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and depression it can help provide a whole new way for researchers to see activity.

Visualization (to me) is also key for creativity. Not only do I think it could be a vital educational tool for us growing up to see what stimulates us and therefore bond us with an understanding of who we are and what our aspirations are. As a result, what we bring to this world as a whole, can perhaps be based on creativity and enjoyment. The importance of this research is the seed it is planting in giving us the power to understand ourselves. 

Neuroscape lab of the University of California San Francisco, run by Adam Gazzaley, have developed the imaging technology, called Glass Brain, showing visualizations of brain activity in real-time. 

1. the brain is first scanned using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a technique utilizing strong magnetic fields and radio waves to image the body.

2. then generates a high-resolution 3D model of the participant's brain.

3. Brain activity is then recorded by an electroencephalogram (EEG) which measures changes in voltage that occur when currents flow through neurons. Normally, EEG recordings look like a series of squiggly lines, something you might expect to come out of a lie detector.

4. glass brain converts this information into bursts of colorful activity, weaving through the 3D brain in real-time as different parts of the brain display activity.

5. This can then be visualized by the participant on a game pad, allowing them to whiz around different areas of their own brain.  Read more...
