somehow hearing those words from revali, deep down, it feels like something inside him cracks. it’s not an instant shatter, for piece by piece, slowly he starts to fall and crumble. never before had he been emotional sitting atop the rito peak, where the divine beast lie, waiting to strike for the right moment — but it was one link’s heart wasn’t ready for quite yet. the burdens he bears were heavy, more grueling than any challenge faced in his entire life. worst part? he felt all alone, unable to feel a physical touch from his past comrades, who all died ( and if it would be in vain ? ) yet — the rito champion, right here and now, implied he had faith in him. knowing that now, a broken sob aches from his throat, eyes burning as tears roll down his cheeks. it was a cold night. so bitter and lonesome, but the warmth revali began to admit from his spirit alone — only seemed to make his heart hurt more. why couldn’t he feel that when he was living. why couldn’t they have been … been friends? “ … revali … i — i’m so sorry. ” his voice cracks, hoarse it surfaces. he’s even more angry thinking these were probably his first ever vocalized words to him. “ i failed all of you … everyone … ” the kingdom, his home, it was nothing but ash and rumble. he sniffles, gloved hand coming up to wipe the ugly sight of snot from his nose. never before had he gotten this emotional, not even when he realized the full extent of what was lost, upon waking up.
“ i — ” the boy who just wanted a simple life as a knight, living life to the fullest, never felt so hopeless. so lost. “ you all deserved better … so much more … and i — ” that damn calamity ganon. had he trained more efficiently, been faster, this – no. it was his fault. a dirty entity with no ounce of compassion, no human decency, just a vile and cruel being — that’s what took away his home, his livelihood, their lives and hope, everything. just knowing that makes link’s blood boil, fuels his rage as his fist clenches tightly, so tight his knuckles turn a ghastly white. “ …. ” in that moment the boy rubs his eyes free of tears, a brand-new resolve glowing within those blue eyes of his. it was much brighter than before. this raw emotion he felt, he’ll channel into pure strength, for their sake. “ … i promise … even if it kills me. i’ll avenge you — all of you. ” it’s not much, but with the power he has, and has yet to gain, it’s all he can hope to do to make amends, make it right for his friends.

i remember saying you liked it.
it was none other than creamy heart soup. while not an extravagant dish ( mainly of peasant origin ) it was by far his favorite. just smelling the sweet aromas, his memory is flooded with old images of the past ( a mother and child enjoying a homemade bowl together, laughter and room lit by a single candle ) a dull ache occurring in his heart which was bittersweet. though, now there’s a joyful glimmer in his eyes, different from his usual stoic demeanor. and then he smiles wide. mouth parting to share words of gratitude:
“ t-this is my favorite. thank you — would you care to eat together, paya? ”
