Queens is the melting pot - messy and wild, unpredictable and grotesque, worldly yet provincial, boring yet exhilarating. Bastion of chain stores and shopping malls. Home to the largest housing projects in the US. There are more dead people buried in Queens than living above ground. We are the country-bumpkins in the Big City... And we don't care. Emma was squatting in an unused house in Brooklyn. I met her one summer outside the Queens Center Mall where she and her dog did some busking. She had two semi-black eyes from getting hit with a lead pipe. She'd been across the U.S. freighthopping. According to her, most of times you see a girl in those situations, it's because of a boy. And she wasn't even with him anymore.
