#THIS BITCH GETS IT#sorry to call you a bitch op#but yesssssss this love triangle is about yearning in different directions at all times#and everyone in it is failing to achieve or obtain something that the others in the trio have#it's art never being able to beat patrick#it's tashi never being able to play tennis so she has to live through her husband#it's patrick not being CHOSEN by either of these people and straining confusedly towards both of them in different ways#like....patrick just wants to MATTER to them. but he doesn't know in what way#and he does not love tennis or think about tennis in the way tashi does (and the way art USED TO)#and that's why ultimately he and tashi would never work out despite the animal chemistry and his animal talent for tennis#cause he didn't GET IT#she wants someone who GETS IT#and art USED TO. in the scenes when they're younger he's focused on tashi's game and talking to her about tennis while patrick#just wants to flirt with her#now art is tired and wants to leave tennis while he's still relatively on top but tashi is voracious and will never be over tennis#and it affects their relationship so strongly#and art loves tashi but doesn't know how to love her in a universe where they no longer share a love of tennis#tashi loves him too (she does) but without the hinge of tennis she doesn't know like...what that looks like and it bores her and scares her#and patrick has always loved art and it's never amounted to anything because art loves patrick too (or did) but he's more repressed#and patrick's betrayal of tashi (by not being there when she broke her leg) is a betrayal of art too and art holds grudges#like none of this story makes sense or is as interesting if we remove one person#i keep seeing people remove tashi and it's like....you didn't GET IT if you think tashi is not essential to this story and this love triang#that's why the end is so good#patrick tells art the truth—letting art in on what was a secret between the other two#and in response...art lets patrick win the set and send them into a tiebreaker#and then in the tiebreaker they actually fucking PLAY#art rejects the idea of patrick letting him win by pushing them to that tiebreaker#and for those few seconds where they play with all their talent and love for each other they are accepting what is between the two of them#at the same time as they are giving tashi what she TRULY fucking wants#to watch some GOOD FUCKING TENNIS
