rewatching neverafter knowing gerard was never properly socialized and spent most of his life as a frog makes me feel so much. of course he’s awkward and weird! of course he’s going to say the wrong thing! he was a frog for a huge part of his life! he literally didn’t have anyone to converse with from the end of childhood until the beginning of his adulthood. he missed out on some incredibly formative years.

also “outside is scary inside is safe that is why castles are built! everything is good in here!” from a man who was only safe once he was allowed inside and suffered intense trauma for years uninterrupted while being forced outside goes so insane. it only makes sense that he added “and flies” to elody’s list of threats. flies represent the worst part of his existence. he is unsafe when surrounded by flies and forced to use them as a source for food. gerard is forced to learn that you can be unsafe anywhere. he can be a frog anywhere, even in a position of royalty that should grant him to utmost comfort.

So, about these two things

Re-watching the scene, I thought it was kind of weird that Stede was armed, even though a trident is a pretty stereotypical weapon for a mermaid.

Ed redesigned this flag to make it in Stede's image basically. The flag now represents Stede breaking his heart. I thought it was really interesting how in this scene Stede approaches him with a kind of similar tool, now looking a lot less evil than "Stede" on the flag. Mermaids are still dangerous of course in the omfd universe (massaged to death by mermaids?). So this ethereal depiction of Stede is not necessarily entirely toothless. Perhaps subconsciously Ed still feels like Stede poses a threat.

On the flag the devil figure is holding an hourglass in its hand. I think the meaning of The hourglass changes as the identity of the figure changes. This used to be a warning to Blackbeard's opponents that their deaths are imminent. Once the flag is altered (especially in light of Ed's plot at the beginning of season 2) it begins to feel like the hourglass is in reference to Edward. This hour glass obviously represents the figure holding life and death in their hands. This used to be Edward now it's Stede. In this scene where Stede is coming in with the trident, he is literally saving Ed's life. Ed has given up, and Stede is buying him more time. In this scene Stede is holding Ed's life in his hands.

I think it's interesting that he's holding a similar tool while acting in a way that contradicts the symbolic warning posed by the cry for help of a flag Ed created.

Got super inspired by the Baba Yaga

This episode had me crying.

The phrase comes from a story of Vaselisa and the Baba Yaga that I came across when I did my customary deep dive after they introduced her. The flaming green skulls on the fence are also from her fairytales.

Odette as the Swan
