Grow your own… Wait, WHAT?!

I went to Chinatown yesterday to find some stuff for the next Femininities photoshoot. My ex roommate had advised me to spend around $20 in whatever I can find to have fun taking pics with a model the next day. The weather sucked today and I had to reschedule the session, but anyways, I found some goods that really surprised me…

When I was a little girl, I used to play with toys that grew in the water. They were usually animals or insects that you could make grow in a couple days, and when the day finally came, you were totally amazed, they were huge! This time I found the same kind of toys, the ones that grow in the water, but wait, WHAT?! These were not animals or insects.

I found three different $1 toys: the SEX TOY, because you are done with looking for a partner who can satisfy you. “Grown Your Own” advise you to put this mini dildo inside a water container and forget about your lonely nights. Come on! you don’t need a man!!

The second one is called the NAUGHTY SCHOOL GIRL. A teenager who likes to cut class and sneak a cigarette in the bathroom. She sweet talks to nerds to have her homework done and be careful! she also steals boyfriends. Someone has to teach her a lesson.

The last one is the POLE DANCER. Of course you want to have a girl who privately dances for you and it is free! Nothing better than that, forget about NYC flash dancers. She’s hot! She’s cheap! She’s yours!

It can seem funny but these “toys” are showing insulting female stereotypes. A female student cheats, is lazy, manipulative and needs someone who can save her from the dark side. A dancer is cheap, yours; you can use it whenever you want, she exists to satisfy you.

I doubt about the sex toy… I actually like that women, us, can live our sexuality in a free way. And it’s true, we definitely don’t need a man to be sexually satisfied. What really concerns me is the regular link that society has created between women and sexuality. Do we want to be naughty? manipulative? cheap? and the property of someone else? DEFINITELY NOT.
