LOB 101 #hairpost

Everyone is doing it! You probably have heard the word ‘’lob’’ at least once today, scrolled through some people getting it on instagram and pinned a few to your inspiration board on pinterest... and you if haven’t you’re probably wondering what a LOB is... The LOB comes from the bob haircut, but is cut longer than your conventional bob (bobs range from ear length to mid neck and can have graduated layers or no layers at all) . Lots of celebrities are sporting the lob these days, Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift,... and there’s all sorts of variations to it. 

The key to a great lob is having fullness at the ends, which comes from keeping the layers none to minimal, very soft no harsh lines and this haircut is often paired with beach waves.  So you have been pinning all the lob pics on pinterest to show your hairstylist to show them what they should give you... This length looks great for your face shape, but are all the pictures you pinned from girls with wavy hair and you have your pin straight and don’t want to style it everyday? 

Jessica Alba is a great example of this situation... believe it or not this is same haircut, most people will be asking for the haircut on the wavy picture, and say they don’t want the straight one because it looks not as interesting. If you don’t have naturally wavy hair or time to do so everyday, rethink your option and if you will be fine with the straight version of this.

Maintenance of a lob:

Lobs have variations on shapes and lengths. If your lob is pass the shoulder even if you go couple months without a haircut, it grows out perfectly! If it is slight bit above the shoulder once it hits the shoulder it will follow the shoulder shape and do some flips, which for some people can be a deal breaker.

On a day-to-day basis, the lob is easy to maintain, wash and condition like you used to with your long hair, if it is naturally wavy scrunch some sea salt spray and you’re ready to roll. If you have straight hair you can wear it straight and if you want a bit extra into it you can curl it with a wand or let it dry with braids in and that will give it some texture... keep some dry shampoo around and use it to create full lengths and more of an undone look. 

Steph’s notes: 

I personally, find that layering, on a conventional way, a haircut that’s from mid neck to collarbone can look so not right. On very fine hair I keep it layer free, and on thicker hair I texture the inside of the hair so the surface if clean. Same goes to facial framing/layering around the face I try to keep it very soft and long... I am always concerned of it becoming a Theresa Caputo-do.
